Android :: Rule Of Thumb When Porting IPhone Graphics To Droid?
Apr 20, 2010
I'd like to port my iPhone app to Android. The interface is constructed with artwork designed for 320x480 resolution. What steps do I need to take when I'm constructing the XML interface for the Android so that my GUI will be compatible with the different screen sizes (or at least the most popular ones...)?

I got to thinking since people managed to port Android to the Iphone why couldn't we do vice versa? Is it because the Iphone OS is not open source?? The main reason I REALLY want to do this is for the awesome games. An emulator perhaps would be great

This questions comes as my team is about to under-go development for a mobile app targeting iphone, android and qt. We aim to complete the iphone version first, and then port to android and qt, and it would be great to know any tips or ideologies to grasp/employ from the outset, that would make the porting process as seamless as possible.
I'm sure there a few of you who have completed their iphone version of an app first, and then gone about developing an android version. I am keen to know any of the hurdles that you encountered, or things you wish you knew from the start.
More specifically, the app we are making will contain forms and some visuals(charts)

The only thing that i like from the iphone are the games.Has anyone ever been successful at porting iphone games to the g1?Or even just being able to make some sort of emulator just for the games?Any answers would really be appreciated!if someone knows how i would love to see the game rope n fly or something similar to it. it seems like a simple game, i want to start to learn how to write my own stuff for android and then i would just try myself.but however i don't know how yet. Also since most people have g1's with multi-touch i was also wondering about any multi touch games? especially the skateboarding game touch grind.

Meebo, the free IM app is now available for download in the andriod market place.
I've been using www.meebo.com to IM on AIM, MSN, and GTalk with 1 logon and without any download (at work mostly heh) for a while now and I have nothing but praise for it.
Now they're created an app that does the same thing for the G1.
If you'd going to try it out, I'd recommend setting up your accounts on the computer/website first (really easy) that way it's ready to go when you DL the app for the phone.
I'm using it, it works, check it out if you need an all-in-one IM client.

I read this quote in one of the webpages: If you are writing a large application, consider dividing it into a suite of applications and services. Smaller applications load faster and use fewer resources. Making a suite of applications, content providers, and services makes your code more open to incorporation into other applications as described the "Use and be used" tip. Is this true? What is the thumb rule for the size of app?

Do any of the current email apps out there now support rules for incoming messages and different alert tones? That's why I'm a slave to my blackberry, I can set certain work emails as priority 1, and assign a different tone to those from certain addresses. If there's an app for Android that does this, I'll pay dearly to be able to have that work. Anyone made such a thing yet?

I have a custom view on which I need to call a method from my activity after the view has been measured in onMeasure. I would like to know exactly when onMeasure is called in the View layout process. It looks like onMeasure is called after my activity´s onCreate, onStart, and onResume. I could override onMeasure and maintain a variable that contains whether the view has been measured or not. However it would be nice to know if there is a rule that relates onMeasure to the activity lifecycle?

Does anyone know of any games that are like "We Rule" for the iphone? It involves kingdom building, etc, but doesn't involve "battling" or having to go to war with people (and all the upkeep that entails). I've tried Kingdoms Live and Pocket Empires, but neither is really the same (although Pocket Empires is closer).

I want to set the background of a Relative or LinearLayout to a custom drawable. I want the shape to draw two horizontal lines across the bottom, leaving the central part transparent (empty). The following draws the horizontal lines centered vertically, where as i need them to be aligned to the bottom of the shape. (If you add a rectangle as an item you can see the shape expands to the dimenstions of the parent, but the lines are still centrally aligned). Code...

I am banging my head against the wall trying to create a Bitmap from a Path object (android.graphics.Path). Is there any way to do this? I've browsed through most of the classes now but can't seem to find any way to do it.
Actually, what I have is a Path that consists of many cubic Bezier curves. It is really expensive to draw with canvas.drawPath(). So I figured that I could perhaps "cache" the Bitmap of this Path by converting the Path to a Bitmap once and then just drawing the Bitmap every time instead of calling canvas.drawPath().
Is there any way to create a Bitmap from this Path?
Or is there a smarter way to draw tha Path multiple times without having to recalculate all of the Beziers? For example, if I created a ShapeDrawable from PathShape from the Path, and just draw the ShapeDrawable objects every time, would that be more efficient than drawing the Path every time?

I have set negative paddings on my custom seekbar so that the round thumb image can go outside the bar, but the thumb isn't rendered out there, is there anyway to force the thumb to be drawn outside those bounds Sorry guys, I'm new to Android development, and have been tasked with fixing an existing application. The problem is that we have a custom rounded looking track bar, which consists of two rounded 'end cap' images and a 1 px background that is tiled to create the seekbar. As far as I can tell there was never one image that could be set as the background of a normal SeekBar, which is why a custom one was created. The thumb is a circle and needs to 'fit' into the end caps - the three pieces of the bar are in a relative layout. Right now I'm kind of unclear as to how the 1 px background png gets stretched as the seekbar bg, otherwise I would try to tack on the two endcaps onto that drawable some how?

I am trying to create a gradient drawable to depict a ratio of something. As a general example, lets say you were looking at a listview containing a fleet of cars. The background could be a fuel gauge - I don't want a smooth, wide transition. I want a very tight transition, and I want to be able to set where that transition takes place.
Here's what I'm staring with, but I'm not getting very far.

I need to implement a screen having around 1000 thumbnails. This screen should support gesture based scrolling as well as fast scrolling using a scrollbar with thumb. So if user want to move from page 1 to page 100 he can just drag the thumb and reach there. But there is no such control in Android. There is seek bar but its look and feel is not similar to what I want. I also want to flick and swipe functionality which can be inherited using horizontalscrollbar. So i want to add functionality of horizontal scroolbar as well as of seekbar in my application.

Can anyone help with album covers? I have one album that shows up with its cover in the default music player. I assume that is because it is included in one of the tags information, I added covers to other albums tag info using windows media player and the advanced tagging option (method found in other forum for other lg phone) but the covers still don't show up when I put the albums back on my phone. Does anyone know which tag the music player is reading? There is also a folder (albumthumbs) that showed up on my sd card once I copied the album thats artwork does work to my phone, and in it is a file without an extension (this is obviously the cover for the one working album). Can I add jpgs to that folder or something and how does the album thumb naming convention work?

However I have got one major problem which is that since getting it I have developed a really painful wrist (no schoolboy humour please). I hold the phone in my right hand and tend to use my right thumb for scrolling, selecting on the screen and pushing the buttons at the bottom. I have developed a persistent stabbing pain over the nobly bit on the right side of my wrist which gets worse after I have been using the phone for a while. Has anyone else had this problem or is it just me getting old?

Code:
target thumb C++: libEGL <= frameworks/native/opengl/libs/EGL/egl.cpp

to Android.mk however the same problem showed up while compiling bionic and it's showing even after adding those lines to bionic's Android.mk .

When a group message is sent between my co-workers, who are all iphone users, and myself (Note 3), one person in the exchange does not receive the text. This is not the common iMessage issue that was plaguing me when I made the switch from Apple to Android. This is specifically affecting one iphone user. When I send her a text individually it is not a problem. The other iPhone users don't have a problem receiving or sending to me.
