Android :: Dialog Activity To Return Before Continuing Executing Of Main Thread
May 22, 2010How would I force the current thread to wait until another has finished before continuing. In my program the user selects a MODE from an AlertDialog, I want to halt executing of the program before continuing as the mode holds important configuration for the gameplay.

Android :: How To Return Non-table-oriented Data From A Content Provider
Mar 27, 2009I'm writing a content provider that returns data about game sessions. This data comes from an SQLite table. However, the client that consumes it will also want summary data: total wins, current/best winning streak, and so on. I'm not sure which approach to use.
* Possible Approach 1: Do nothing, let the client calculate what it needs.
The client could step through the whole table and calculate statistics itself. However, it's inefficient to send the entire database over the content provider link if the client only wants the summaries; this may also be prone to bugs because each client has to reimplement the summary calculations.
* Possible Approach 2: Separate content URIs for summary data.
The client could ask for a URI like content://myapp/summary/totalwins and get back a text/plain stream containing the number of wins. This seems like a big hassle to implement on both ends, though. Or it could ask for a URI like content://myapp/summary and get back an XML stream containing all the summary data, but this isn't much simpler.
* Possible Approach 3: A phony table.
The client could ask for a URI like content://myapp/summary and get back a cursor over a single row, with each summary value having its own column. This would not be an SQLite cursor but a custom in-memory cursor. It seems a little unnatural to use a table metaphor when there's always exactly one row, though.
* Possible Approach 4: The extras bundle.
Cursor has a getExtras() method that returns a bundle. The client could make a request for the main URI, content://myapp/sessions, and then just look at the extras bundle instead of reading any rows. However, there's no setExtras() method, so I'm stuck with whatever bundle object SQLite puts in there - and if it's Bundle.EMPTY, I'm out of luck.

Jul 19, 2010Is there a standard native Android content provider that will return data listing all of the apps currently installed on the cellphone. Something like open()/readdir() on a Linux bin directory.
Given that you know an app is installed on an Android cellphone, and you know that apps name, how do you launch that app from a completely different and unrelated app. You might not know which Intents/Broadcasts/URIs the app you want to launch is listening for. And not all Android apps are written to respond to Intent/URI broadcasts or requests.

Jul 28, 2010I'm trying to figure out the correct way to create an AsyncTask to retrieve some data from the internet and then to take that data and bundle it up in an Intent and pass it to a new activity(A list display). So in the first activity I just have an EditText and Button. In the event of an OnClick the task should be called and when it is finished the data should be bundled inside an Intent and passed to the next Activity. The problem is when I take the results from onPostExecute and set them to an instance variable of the main activity, that instance variable is still null when the task is complete. Here is the barebones version of the code:

When I debug the application I see onPostExecute does contain a valid PlacesList full of results, so why is the instance variable places set to null after the task is executed? I am going about "returning data" from an AsyncTask incorrectly?

Jan 25, 2010I am having a problem about repeating Login dialog (an AlertDialog) and progress dialog, coordinating with http thread. I suppose repetitive Login dialog (if fail, continue) handling should be common and straightforward. I guess my approach must be wrong somewhere. I already spent 2 days on this and am desperate. So please help. User starts the app, the main activity starts.Show a login dialog (generated by the main thread, i.e. from on Create. The main thread then starts a wait_thread, which will wait for http to return data and check the data and decide what to do.After user input username/password and press login, a progress dialog starts.The progress dialog starts an http_thread to talk to the server and get replies. Once done, it will notify the waiting thread.If the user type in the right username password first time, the code works fine.But it always fail for 2nd time Login, i.e. When first login fail(wrong username/ password),the wait_thread will generate 2nd Login dialog to let user repeat the login process. But after user hit the login on this 2nd Login dialog, the system always crashes.

Android :: Showing Dialog After Another Dialog Hangs
Sep 2, 2010I have a really weird problem, which I am unable to debug so far. thing is. my app needs to download something to work. So in the beginning of the onCreate() method, I check if that something is already downloaded. If not, I pop a dialog up asking the user to download it.My dialog is shown and I am clicking, so aManager.install() is called. I am passing the context because that aManager.install() pops up a ProgressDialog to show downloading progress and spawns a new thread in which everything is downloaded. So obviously before creating my dialog I make a Handler to receive the response from that aManager.install(). And the response MAY vary, because for example the internet connection isn't available (Exception raised and catched and listener called with different code).Now, when that happens (Exception) I would like to call another dialog saying "something went wrong, would you like to retry?" so another call to showDialog(DIALOG_REINSTALL) (this time with another code).thing is the showDialog() gets called (I can verify this by logging) but the dialogs doesn't show up. Instead my application JUST HANGS Does someone have a clue why it's doing this? No exception raised, absolutely nothing from logcat, I can't tell WHERE it's hanging...just see that the method is called and the dialog should be displayed.

Android :: Way To Return Result Of AsyncTask
Jan 21, 2010According to my research, which includes reputable sources (Mark Murphy et al), the most preferred way of polling a remote source and presenting said data to the user is by creating a service and using AsyncTask within that service to do the polling. I have done that.But, when I read the docs there seem to be several "Threading Rules" that conflict with this way of doing things: "The task instance must be created on the UI thread." and "execute(Params...) must be invoked on the UI thread." As stated, I have created the task instance on the Service thread (not the UI thread). Am I missing something? Also, when the AsyncTask finished, I sent out a Broadcast on onPostExecute, which is then picked up by the Activity, telling it to retrieve the final value again from the service (since I couldn't obviously update the UI from the service). I couldn't figure out any other way to return the result of the AsyncTask. Is this the correct practice?

I was under the impression that postExecute() was called from the Thread where execute() was called : I have been using an AsyncTask in a background Service with its own thread, and postExecute() was called in the service thread, not the main thread. However, I recently had an issue with the postExecute() not being called at all, while an exception was thrown : " sending a message to a Handler on a dead thread". How is it exactly :
- shall AsyncTask be used ONLY from the main thread ?
- if not, in which thread postExecute() is supposed to be called : always the UI thread, or the execute() calling thread ?
