Android :: How To Change Label Of Activity Dynamically
Jul 14, 2010
When we create a new activity, in the Android.manifest file, we can set some text for the activity's label. It looks like:
<activity class="MyActivity" android:label="Some text here!">
Is there anyway to access that programatically and change it during runtime? Regards Dileep

I want to give my application launcher icon (the one that is displayed on the startscreen!) a different, shorter caption. It seems the launcher takes its label from the mainfest section about the main activity's label, as here:
<activity android:name="MainActivity" android:label="@string/app_short_name">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
I already changed the original reference to my app's name @string/app_name to a different, shorter string resource here. BUT - big BUT: this also of course changes this activity's default title! And I did not want that to happen, there's enough space for a long application name! Setting the long title again in onCreate using the setTitle(int) method does no good either, because the short name will be visible to the user for a short time, but long enough to notice!
And - please don't answer my question by refering to a custom titlebar... I do not want to go that long way, just because of a stupid string title! It's a pain to draw a custom title bar for so little effect! Is there no easy way to just give the launcher a different string to display?

I have an Android app with 3 tabs in a TabHost (text labels, no images). I set up the tabs like so:
intent = new Intent().setClass(this, AnnouncementsActivity.class);
spec = tabHost.newTabSpec("news").setIndicator("News").setContent(intent);
tabHost.addTab(spec);
I start up a background thread to fetch announcements from my server and I want to update the text label on the tab to tell the user how many new announcements there are. For example, I want to change the text on the Tab to "News (3)". How can I access and change the text label on the tab?

Just got the HTC Hero from Sprint and so far am loving almost everything about it. One question that I hope someone can help me with:Is there a way to change the size of icon's text or label (or perhaps the text itself)? For example, I have a screen with several Google apps on it, but they look like this: "Google M..." (for Google Maps); "Google S..." (for Google Sky), etc. It would be great if I could just change this to "Maps" or "Sky."

I've got an activity for which I've defined an intent filter statically in AndroidManifest.xml. I'd like to register additional intents dynamically to that same intent filter in the activity's onStart() method. Is this possible? I'm trying to avoid having to implement a separate intent receiver class.

I have a custom view (an extension of a TextView) that I want to dynamically add to my Layout (don't want to include it in the main.xml file).
The book says to fetch the RelativeLayout using findViewById() in my java code then create a new instance of my custom view, then use addView on the RelativeLayout to add the new view.
I'm not getting any errors, but when I click my button to add the new view, nothing is happening (view isn't being added). Do I need to set additional properties on my custom view (layout width, layout height for example) in order for it to be shown?
Adding code

I am writing an app that requires you to be logged in to a service before using it. From my understanding of android so far, you have to choose which activity to launch when you open from the launcher in the manifest. I don't know which activity i want to launch at compile time. I want the user to click the icon, then I check and see if they're logged in, then decide based on that whether to launch the login activity, or the main app activity. Is there a way to do this?

I have three tabs in my Application. On an event under one Tab, i want to change the title of an another existing Tab. This is the title that we provide while adding the tabs to the TabHost.
Eg: TabHost.addTab(tabHost.newTabSpec("Tab2")).setIndicator("I need to be Changed dynamically").setContent....
In the above example, the title of the tab2 that i provided under setIndicator(), should be changed dynamically.
Is there any way to accomplish this.

I have an Android application which has four tabs (I use a main TabActivity with TabHost and TabSpecs).
In one of my sub activity (activity opened in a tab), i need to open a tab not by clicking on the tab title and i don't know how to do this.
For example, i have a button in my activity and when i click on it, it opens a different tab.
For the moment, it is what i do:
Intent intent = new Intent(myActivity.this, myTabActivity.class);
intent.putExtra("ComeFrom", true);
intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP);
startActivity(intent);
Then in the TabActivity, if i get true reading the "ComeFrom" extra i open the wished tab but the problem is that it kills all the other activity. So, if someone knows a better (cleaner) way to do that trick.
