Android :: Pre Scale Background Example / Speeding Up Web Views
Apr 28, 2010
I've created a custom ViewGroup (based off of the Launcher) that allows paging scrolls between some WebViews. Problem is that it doesn't scroll as smoothly as I want it to. I've been following Romain Guy's 2008 advice, but I don't see any massive improvements. Is it because I am using WebViews, or am I just doing the prescaling wrong? This is my code:
Bitmap originalImage = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.redbg);
originalImage = Bitmap.createScaledBitmap( originalImage, // bitmap to resize ((WindowManager)
getSystemService(Context.WINDOW_SERVICE)).getDefaultDisplay().getWidth(),
// new width ((WindowManager)getSystemService(Context.WINDOW_SERVICE))
.getDefaultDisplay().getHeight(), // new height true); // bilinear filtering
getWindow().setBackgroundDrawable(new BitmapDrawable(originalImage));
called from onCreate. Is the right?

I have a simple ListView and on that ListView I have placed a number of custom defined Views. The CustomView has ImageView and two TextViews.
The CustomView also has a "stateful drawable" as background, so that the background image (a 9-patch) changes if you press the Row in the ListView. When pressing the Row, the background image changes to a Red-ish thing.
The problem is that when the background changes from the default greyish, all the Views in the CustomView (ImageView and TextViews) still have their greyish background and thus creates very ugly greay boxes on top of the now redish background.
What is the best way to solve that problem? I hoped that such things were handled automatically (as it is done in for example .NET), but I was wrong it seems.

On a layout I want to scale the background image (keeping its aspect ratio) to the space allocated when the page gets created. I am using layout.setBackgroundDrawable() and am using a BitmapDrawable to setGravity for clipping and filling, but don't see any option for scaling.

I'm battling with extending a TextView for my Android app. I'd like to create "bubbles" to display text messages in a conversation, similar to the native iPhone SMS conversations.
Is there a way to implement the resizing of a background image without just stretching it? I'd like to have a single background image that keeps it's corners but get stretched only in defined areas. I think this should be possible because I've seen it in a SMS app, but I wonder how to implement that.

I have an image, say 16px from our designer. I want to Set it as the background image on a view, but the view is larger than the image. So I want to anchor the image at the top of the view, and then have the view fill in the bottom with a solid color.
Is this possible in the current version of android, 1.5_r3?
Here is what I have so far, but the image is scaling to take up the entire view, and I am not sure how to set the image as background and specify a solid color at the same time. I suspect I need to wrap the view in a containing view which has the color specified, is that the best way to do it? code...

I am using a TabActivity (Main) with 3 TabSpecs
I am using Intents for the content of the 3 Tabs
TabA, TabB, TabC for example.
All these tab activities use common data that is stored in SharedPreferences
In the Main TabActivity I have an options menu which has a refresh option.
CODE:.............
This refresh uses an AsyncTask (updateCommonDataFromWeb) to reload the common data from the web.
I need a way to tell the 3 tab activities to refresh their views and rebuild their content from the newly downloaded data.
When the tab activities are first created they load the data from SharedPreferences like so:
CODE:..............
I thought about making a common method on each of the tab activities
like.... reloadViewData()
I thought maybe I could use the activity manager from the Main TabActivity to get the activity of the current tab like so:
CODE:.............
Unfortunately i cant get this approach to work, whilst activity is the correct instance its an Activity instead of a TabA,TabB or TabC
Maybe i've completely taken the wrong approach to the whole thing.
I have also read alot about not using Activities for tab content instead using views.
However I dont know what view to use to replace my <RelativeLayout /> as i cant use my R.layout.* as views.

I 'm porting a 6502 Emulator to android. I have it working, but only at roughly .3mhz (1 required.) After running the profiler I see the simply reading memory (byte[]) is one of the most costly operations. Does anyone have any ideas for speeding this up? Should I wait for the NDK? Or is my G1 just underpowered.

I've been working on a game framework for a little while, and while its far from perfect, I've put the current version online. To be honest, I haven't used much OpenGL in the past. Before last week I had never tried using it. If anyone would like to take a look, please do, I'd appreciate all the help possible on speeding it up. There are many features I have in mind and am planning at the minute, but so far it supports:
# Texture and Sprite management # Text, using TTF fonts # Organised layers # Two audio management classes, one optimized for music, the other for sound effects # Sprite dynamics (acceleration, terminal velocity, collisions) # Animation # Handlers to manage events fired through movement, animation, screen touches, accelerometer input, device shaking and collisions # Several minor features aimed at speeding development, such as screen settings and vibration.

I am implementing a music player application in Android. My play list selection screen is implemented as a tab selector widget which contains a ListActivity inside each of the tabs: Artist, Albums, Songs.
I want to update the ListView in each of the ListActivity when I delete an item from any of the lists.
i.e. When I long press an item in the Artists list a context menu is drawn with "Delete Artist"
And it should delete all the songs from this artist in the Songs ListView, delete all the albums by this artist in the Albums ListView, and finally delete the entry for the artist in the Artist ListView.
Each of the ListActivity has its own fillData() method, which updates the ListView when the button in the context menu is pressed.
How can I call the fillData() method of the Albums ListActivity after I update the ListView inside of the Artists ListActivity?

I have the following XML code:.................
The idea is to change the views, whenever I press one of the radio buttons. When I press a button the first time everything works out fine, but the second time I press a button, I get an IllegalStateException, and I can't quite see why I'm getting this.
Also, the Activity seems to set all my global variables to null, which is why I have to create them every time I switch from portrait to landscape or vice versa. So I would like to know if there is a way I can save my views in the Bundle, or any other way in which I can permanently save my views, so I don't have to add or create them every time, I flip the phone. And whenever I flip the phone, it seems that it rereads the main XML file, causing the RadioGroup to be set to 2D even if the 3D button is checked. This is because I've said the 2D button to be checked from when the app is first created, but I would like to also save the state of that RadioGroup.

Is there any way to query a root view of an activity for all of its child views even before the root view or its children have been inflated? I guess what I'm looking for is whether a view knows ahead of time what children it will have before it gets inflated, and can I get that list in some way. Bizarre I realize, but I think it will help me with some unconventional automation testing I'm working on. I haven't found anything in the API like this.

How can I set the scaling in a web view (or any view at all)? I have a box of 200 and 200, for example. If I apply a web view to it, a web view bigger than the box, it will give me scrollbars. I am seeking for a way to scale the content in order for the webView to fit the box.
Assume that I know the dimesions of the box, and ALSO the dimensions of the WebView.

I require an animation for an image in my application.The image should start coming from the top left corner till the middle of screen. The image size will be smaller at the initial stage. While coming to the middle of the screen, its size should increase(i.e. scaling should take place). Image should not go back to its original position. It should be placed at the middle of the screen itself after the animation.

I have a custom view which is drawing some bitmaps on screen. I want to scale the bitmaps depending on some sensor data. Can anyone suggest to me the best way (performance wise) to scale the bitmaps.
Right now I'm creating the bitmaps in the constructor of the view but if I start to scale it in the onDraw method I believe I'll just be re-drawing the bitmaps (Which will be a memory / cpu hog).

I have read about using a 'dip' scale rather than just px, this is straightforward to implement in XML. But how do I adjust values accordingly in the java code? For example:
tv.setTextSize(20)
will result in text of size 20 px right? What's the quickest way of making this 20 dip, other than adding a resource?

I have a class that extends LinearLayout and handles drawing to the screen. (it is in the early stages) How would I go about determining the dimensions of a screen and resizing the images, etc., that this class is drawing to the screen on the fly before actually drawing them to the screen?
What I'm trying to accomplish is support for devices that have varying screen dimensions and resolutions from the same code base, with each device being scaled properly.
