I am new here and i have just got my HTC desire. Its a great phone. When i clicked on the MUSIC button i noticed a few pre-loaded songs and i could move from one song to another by slidding my finger across the screen. When i downloaded my own songs(and deleted the pre-loaded ones) the phone just wouldn't move from one song to another by slidding my finger across the screen. And about the wifi. I use the POWER CONTROL widget. When i pressed the button for wifi, it started connecting and the green line under the button appeared and a few moments later(2 sec) also that sign on top of the screen. But i wanted to remove my google account so i had to use the option FACTORY DATA RESET. Now when i click that wifi button it starts connecting and that green line under the button appears, however now it takes 5 seconds or more for that sign on top of the screen to appear(before that sign appears i can't use my wifi connection).

From reading Romain Guy's blog post, I understand keep static reference to a Drawable can create huge memory leaks. So what is the recommended solution if I don't want to reload my big Drawable image every time screen orientation changes and effect on performance? Currently my app takes >3 seconds to complete each orientation change.

New to Android and new to this forum. I've converted from a blackberry and I can't tell you how much I love my Captivate. Well, enough of that :-) I have a few questions. I currently have my display set to time out after one minute. When I'm using the music player is there anyway to prevent the screen from locking. I have having to unlock it to switch tracks.
As a side, is there a way to change the locking system from a sliding pattern to a number code?

I have a scroll view with lots of image buttons. I want to change the image for an image button when it's pressed. The thing is that I want the image to remain until another image button is pressed. That's why I couldn't use a selector. What is the best practice to achieve his?

My OEM's preloaded rom is almost-nearly stock, apart from 2 things:
1. White background on "system settings" interface and not the default holo. Cant that be changed to default?
2. Ribbon effect instead of flash-light in holo effect, which tbh is quite annoying, because the ribbon effect is also quite large and in slower animation speed so that,s 1 second of frustation everytime i scroll to the end. (Yea, 1 second isnt much but, add those up and it gets annoying really fast)
How can these be changed back to default without installing a custom rom?

I am attempting to create a very graphically intensive android application. Almost all of the UI is based on bitmaps and I would like to support as many different devices as possible and to have the app look great in all of them.Is it possible to embed different resolutions for each image and have a different image displayed on each device. I am aware of stuff like hdpi folders etc. as well has units like dip etc., but that still leaves too many variables as to how the image is displayed. I would like to not have the images scaled at all to avoid losing image quality.For instance on my high resolution device I would like an image to be exactly 100px and then on a medium resolution device I would like a lower resolution image to display and be exactly 80px. If I use display independent units, I cannot ensure that the images will be of a particular size.

I'm trying to work with a custom build of Android based on KitKat to incorporate a stylus, copying some of the functionality (though not code) from Samsung which sells Android-with-stylus builds for e.g. the Note 3. I'm not including details of the specific device because right now I am working on a custom dev device and my aim is to write code which is generic enough to be usable from any Android (based on KitKat). The build (written by others) already incorporates drivers and sends stylus events correctly as motion events etc. Programming at the app level I can receive onHover, ontouch, onClick etc
The specific functionality I am trying to achieve is to pick up a stylus-button-click while hovering. It's perfectly possible to do this in any app, using an onGenericMotion Listener.
However, I want to make my "stylus-action" have system-wide effect - so that anywhere (in any other app, or in the launcher or whatever) I will pick up the event (prior to any other app) and bring up my custom menu. (just like AirCommand in Samsung Note 3) I guess in my custom Android this would then make that particular action somewhat protected or unusable for other users, but I'm ok with that.
In older Android (prior to ICS) you could try something by putting up a System Overlay (i.e in regular app code, without hacking the ROM at all), but this is no longer possible.
This is not an attempt to tapjack or whatever, I understand why this functionality has been removed from the domain of the regular programmer, and I don't want to regress my ROM back to pre-ICS behaviour by allowing the System Overlay hack. Now I am programming the system (if my change is good enough I'd like to submit it back to AOSP) so I would like to know the best method to address this. Since Samsung have already done this, it must be legal (using legal in the terms of "Android will allow it"), and I want to do it right.
Is it possible to write something similar to the System Overlay when you are running from a system service? Or is there a good choke-point to capture events before they are broadcast to the current running apps?
I was looking at AndroidXRef /frameworks/base/core/java/android/view/View.java specifically in the function dispatchHoverEvent() which looks like a promising place. My naive idea is that I would place code here checking the MotionEvent to see if the button is pressed and if it is, don't call any listeners and instead call my little menu app (or broadcast a custom message, or something anyway). However, I've never written code on the ROM level before (LOTS of experience writing app code) so I don't know if this is a really bad point or a good point to add in code. Should I be putting things at a higher level or a lower one? Will this capture all events or not? Is it all just trial and error?

I use this code in my getView:
@Override
public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) {
View v = convertView;
if (v == null) {
LayoutInflater vi = (LayoutInflater)getSystemService
(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
v = vi.inflate(R.layout.listrow, null);
}
Order o = items.get(position);
if (o != null) {
TextView tt = (TextView) v.findViewById(R.id.toptext);
ImageView thumb = (ImageView) v.findViewById(R.id.icon);
if(o.getOrderDrawable()!=null){
thumb.setImageDrawable(o.getOrderDrawable());
}
else{
tt.setText(o.getOrderTitle());
}
}
return v;}
The problem is when scrolling; sometimes the correct image shows, but sometimes when scrolling back/forward, the images shows randomly and that is not associated with the row. The images are downloaded from the web.

I have a png and a jpg image on disk. I'd like to use any built-in intent (if any are available) to view the image (just a single one at a time). Something like this:
Intent intent = new Intent();
intent.setImagePath("/blah/myimage.jpg");
startActivity(intent);
is there a built-in intent in android to do this, or do I have to write my own image viewing-activity? It would be cool if there was one that had panning/zooming as found in WebView.

I am developing an app in android, which basically visits a given url and downloads an image. Now i want to populate this downloaded image and show it in thumbnail view. I have tried out displaying the same from SD Card, but when i am doing the same for downloaded files, it doesn't seems to work.
public View getView(int position,View convertView,ViewGroup parent)
{
System.gc();
ImageView i = new ImageView(mContext.getApplicationContext());
if (convertView == null)
{
//imagecursor.moveToPosition(position);
//int id = imagecursor.getInt(image_column_index);
//i.setImageURI(Uri.withAppendedPath(MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, ""+ id));
i.setImageBitmap(bitmap);
i.setScaleType(ImageView.ScaleType.FIT_CENTER);
i.setLayoutParams(new GridView.LayoutParams(100, 100));
}
else
{
i = (ImageView) convertView;
}
return i;
}

I am going to create a gallery view where the user shall switch between different pictures of products. On some of them is going to be a label like "sale" and a short discription. On startup I want to display a loading animation at that place until the product photo is downloaded.
Use layer list or state list for one product photo?
Could you please show me, how to set that up?
How to make that spinner spin?
How to turn it on or off (how to access the layer list through code)?
By the way, is "spinner" the best word for this? It seems to stand for several things. Feel free to edit this question, if I didn't hit the right words.

I want to scale and display images which are dynamically loaded to a certain maximum size. The way I'm doing this is to set the layout_width and layout_height of my ImageView to the maximum dimensions and setting the scaleType to "fitCenter".
But here's the problem. This is inside a RelativeLayout and I want to show text directly under the image. In portrait mode, the text is way at the bottom (because of the height I have set). So I want the ImageView to scale down to the actual visible image size which is what it would seem like adjustViewBounds="true" should do.
Am I wrong in this assumption? Or is there a better way to do what I'm trying to do? Because I've been unsuccessful to this point!

I have a custom layout that I have written that basically just displays a bunch of Image Views. I am handing on Touch events for all the Image Views in my layout. However, if a user touches one image View and then drags over another Image View, I would like to be able to handle that as well. How would I go about capturing this behavior?

Whenever the Android device locks and I unlock it, the image that was displayed in the ImageView disappears. What do I need to do to redisplay it or prevent this from happening.
More:
I have a view that displays video, images or text depending on the context and three subclasses that extend the parent view. On creation, I replace the display view with the View object returned from createMediaPreview(), which each subclass implements.

I was capturing images before that were showing up in the gallery, but now they are not and I can't figure out why. Here is my code:
ContentValues values = new ContentValues();
values.put(android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.IS_PRIVATE, false);
String name = "ugc_" + String.valueOf(System.currentTimeMillis());
values.put(android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.TITLE, name);
imageURI = getContentResolver().ins (android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, values);
I also tried:
values.put(android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.IS_PRIVATE, 0);
As well as leaving out that value, but nothing seems to work now.
