Android :: Possible To Add A New Language To Droid Devices?
Jun 23, 2010
I have a Nexus One and I would like to know if it's possible to add a new language to the system? Or are the languages compiled into the kernel?
if it's possible where can I find information about creating/developing a language for Android?

All SYMBIAN based end devices accept Java language Applications
(i)Does this mean that the applications made for Android would run in S60 ,without any modifications?
(ii)If not then what exactly we mean when we say the above statement? Is there any web link to which I can refer to?
(iii)What are the coding guidelines that we need to follow so that an Android application can be ported on S60 with minimum changes?

I am a Linux enthusiastic and now using the most awesome mobile operating system Android ICS.
My mobile phone is Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman wt19i. Recently I installed CYANOGEN MOD 9 which I think the best available rom from the performance perspectives.
But one problem popped out.
The problem is this Rom can't render Indic languages well.
The fonts are not perfect.
The encoding is set to UTF 8, but still it can't render the BENGALI LANGUAGE LIKE THAT OF SONY ERICSSON STOCK ROMS.

Does anyone know of some alternative JVM language, however obscure it might be, which can compile to plain old java bytecode, without the need of a language runtime.I need this in order to try to develop android applications without startup or size penalty. Scala, Clojure and Groovy all require its own runtime library distributed with the application, so they are out of the scope of this question. The only one language which claims to satisfy this goal is Charles Nutter's Mirah, but I couldn't make it to work on windows. To clarify a bit, I know any language has to have runtime library. Obviously, what I am looking for is a language that has no additional runtime required besides JRE, or at least very limited one.

Would appreciate if anybody can give me some pointers on how to mixed different language in an android app? For example, mixing displaying English along w/ Spanish, or Chinese by using Unicode for the Spanish or Chinese characters.
I have searched the post in this group but doesn't seem to find any discussion about this..

I am developing my am on mac (10.5.8), on eclipse and SDK 1.6 and a Vodafone HTC Magic Everything was working ok up to a few days ago. I can not see my device on adb devices. I also got a Sony Xperia and I can not see it on the list either. I upgraded the phone software (the HTC) to 1.6 a few days ago. Maybe that is what caused the change, but I could not be sure.

I've got an iphone app and I'm looking to port some of the data-layer objective-c code to a scripting language which can also run on an android phone. Any suggestions on what to use? I'd also like to be able to push new scripts to the app for bug fixes. Not sure if this is against the iphone SDK agreement or not.

Is it possible to change the language of an app programmatically while still using Android resources?
If not, is it possible to request a resource in an specific language?
I would like to let the user change the language of the app from the app.

When is Android (2.2) going to add language support to Droid (such as Droid X) phones so we can see web sites in other languages? Also, we are unable to see videos that use Silverlight.

I bought an HTC Magic today and, as I always did with other phones too, set the language to english. The problem is I happen to write a lot of messages (email and SMS) in italian too.Is there a way to set the completion language separately from the GUI language? Even better if during the editing of a message would be possible to switch the language, as possible with Nokia phones. Please note that in the subject I mentioned erroneusly T9 which has nothing to do with completion, as I now learned.

I'm not *entirely* sure this one is supposed to go here, but anyway :)
Assuming I have two Android-powered devices, connected both to the same 3G network; does the current API of Android allow to have a Service running on one of them being contacted by an Application running on the other one over this 3G network or do I have to go for a more traditional network (e.g. WiFi AP, Bluetooth) ? If so, how do I do it ?
I saw the usual Socket part in the API but it is not clear to me whether this is the way to use the 3G. I also found another discussion related to communication between a laptop and a dev phone ("Sending data to android dev phone using 3G connection") so it seems to be possible.
Does anyone have some details about how to do this?

What are the options to connect (create stream? or send datagrams?) between two android devices? (I know I can use Internet, but i think that lag will be big and it's overuse to just exchange data between to phones that are nearby). Is it possible to use bluetooth or wifi ? so two applications on two devices can connect each other (create bi- directional stream) and send some data.

I'm developing a little program which syncs some of the users data from my app on the cloud (just a load of strings, but that's not the point).
To help identify each device uniquely I would like to use the IMEI (or ESN number for CDMA devices) ...so here is the question, does anyone know how to access this programmatically?

Does anyone know, if vendors provide or if there is a site where one could download AVD profiles for existing android devices on the market so you can run your apps in the emulator and basically see how they will run on said devices?
I know it's pretty easy to create a new device but it'd be great if one could just download the config file for each device and run it.

I've accepted for a while now that it's impossible to silently install an application on Android - that is, to have a program install an application bundled as an APK without providing the standard OS installation prompt and going through the app installer activity. But now I've picked up a copy of the Appbrain fast web installer, and it does exactly this.
How on earth is this possible?

I did a search and all I came up with is people trying to stream audio via bluetooth. One of the nice features I am a little envious of the ipods having is that about every stereo out there has an interface to control the ipod remotely. Is there anything similar available that works via the USB for android devices?
