Android :: All SYMBIAN Based End Devices Accept Java Language Applications

Mar 25, 2009

All SYMBIAN based end devices accept Java language Applications

(i)Does this mean that the applications made for Android would run in S60 ,without any modifications?

(ii)If not then what exactly we mean when we say the above statement? Is there any web link to which I can refer to?

(iii)What are the coding guidelines that we need to follow so that an Android application can be ported on S60 with minimum changes?

Android :: JVM Based Language Without Language Runtime

Sep 8, 2010

Does anyone know of some alternative JVM language, however obscure it might be, which can compile to plain old java bytecode, without the need of a language runtime.I need this in order to try to develop android applications without startup or size penalty. Scala, Clojure and Groovy all require its own runtime library distributed with the application, so they are out of the scope of this question. The only one language which claims to satisfy this goal is Charles Nutter's Mirah, but I couldn't make it to work on windows. To clarify a bit, I know any language has to have runtime library. Obviously, what I am looking for is a language that has no additional runtime required besides JRE, or at least very limited one.

Android :: Applications Accept Touch And Keyboard Mode

Apr 6, 2009

I am quite confused on this is InTouch mode or not for a View. Some of the apps I have seen can accept touch and keyboard requests that the same time but I cannot figure out how they are doing it. This is what happens in my app. Please shed some light on why this happens. If I touch the screen the keyboard is no longer responsive until I ackmoved the TrBall which takes me out of touchmode. I have used apps that seamlessly go from touch and keyboard without the need of moving the trackball.

Android :: Transferring Palm Memos To Based Devices

Oct 3, 2010

Having used Palm PDA and smartphones for many years, I have hundred of memo items that I would like to transfer to my Droid X. One option I have explored is to import Palm memos into SplashData. Importing CSV data from Palm to SplashData on a PC is causing a crash; probably some minor formatting issue that I am trying to debug. I am sure there are many other long time Palm users who have switched to Android based devices who have faced the same need. Looking for any pointers to apps or ways to transfer the data...

Android :: How To Fix A Java Language?

It's a card game, and I've used a method that redraws each hand every round - that might be wasteful but I couldn't think of a better way to do it. Code...

Android :: What Is Most Viable Free Alternative To Java Language?

Aug 15, 2010

With Oracle suing Google over Dalvik's patent infringements, I'm wanting to get off the Java bus I've been on for 10+ years. I really enjoy coding in Java, love the tools (eclipse, profilers, etc...), cross platform, garbage collection, etc. What is the best alternative out there? I'd like to build cool gui's, mobile apps, web apps, back-end integration, pretty much everything and anything. I don't really want to invest in learning 5 different languages for 5 different scenarios if possible. I'd love to be contributing to FOSS. Even if many things aren't there yet, I want to get on the train with a technology that is headed in the right direction. I supported Java out of the box with 1.0 implementations because it got me off of MS choke-hold. Now I want to get off the Java train for the same reason - Oracle! I looked briefly at Parrot VM. I've never felt too comfortable with Dynamic languages, but if they are really the way to go, I'll battle that early learning curve. Tried Ruby on Rails for a while, and it was okay, though I missed my Eclipse debugger, code completion, etc., so didn't last long. Trying out Groovy...but I want to distance myself from any litigation and really want to support freedom. I'd prefer not to program in C or C++, don't want to do memory management. So, in conclusion, what is a good next step for an old Java hand? What languages have seasoned Java professionals moved onto? Do I need to worry about things like Scala that are designed to run on the JVM? What does this lawsuit about Dalvik mean?

Android :: Testing GPS Based Applications - Phone Choice

May 11, 2009

I'd like some feedback from your experiences on the best option to test GPS based applications. I've been developing apps and in the middle of this will have to ship out to Afghanistan for a 1 year tour. Perfect opportunity to concentrate on the apps in the down-time (nothing to do stuck on a base most of the time in a 10x15 shippping container). This is bad (with bad being a relative term) from the standpoint that there are no "data" plans in Afghanistan for GSM phones. I can get GSM service but no "data" plans. If i buy a Android OS phone I'm concerned about how I can update it with new firmware and load apps. I will have wifi access, but from what I've read this will not enable a "push" of the new firmware update to the phone as if I was with T-Mobile. Any suggestions on what phone i should buy and how to "test' my applications where I can update my firmware and load my apps onto the phone?

Android :: Approaches To Writing Subscription Based Applications?

Mar 25, 2010

I have a Web Service and an Android application that uses this web service. I want to make this application subscription based. The user would subscribe to the service and would be able to use it till their subscription is valid. I understand that to create such an application, we would have to integrate necessary checks in the service and validate a subscription every time it is used on the backend.

But is it possible to do all(well, at least most of) this, on the handset itself? Is it possible to achieve the following in an Android application? Make the application work only for a limited period of time(till the subscription is valid). If yes, how? How to maintain data about the subscription and where?

Android :: Api To External Usb Devices For Robotic Applications

Nov 18, 2010

Android devices become incredible cheap (especially those with android v1.6). I'm considering to use one as a brain of autonomous robot. Unfortunately I didn't find any info on that.

I would like to connect two external USB-webcams and some DIY-selfmade USB ADC & output-ports converter to steer the wheels and read analog distance sensors. If I choose some cheap netbook than they usually already have 3 usb ports. But if I will be forced to use a tablet, then it requires also an usb hub.

Do android devices support usb-hubs?
Is there any API to grab still frames from external usb webcams (e.g. "vfa://0" & "vfa://1")
Is there any API to read from USB custom device? Let assume that it will simulate serial port for simplicity.
Do I get all of this in android 1.6 or any newer version?

As an update for your information: Based on answers I assume that android device will be too expensive in comparison to effort. I will go for cheap atom netbook with standard linux & arduinio USB device for controls & sensors. At cost of half kg (one pound) heavier device I will save months on learning & development.

Android :: Checking Speed Of Applications Without Physical Devices?

Feb 23, 2010

I'm writing a game for Android. I'd like to target as many devices as possible. I'm aware that Droid owners buy about 50% of the apps and the rest are a mixture of G1 and HTC devices. So far, I've been testing my app in the emulator set to model the Droid phone (where I get about 40 fps) as well as on an actual Droid phone (where I get about 60 fps).

I'd like to know how fast my app runs on slower devices such as the G1. Is there any way I can do this besides getting a G1 myself or asking people with G1s to test it for me? For example, is there any way I can use the emulator to get a rough idea how well it will run on the G1?

Android : Develop Applications In C++ Without Going Through Java Wrapper?

Apr 2, 2010

I am relatively new to android but a very big fan. I'm not a stranger to development on handheld devices, since I have some experience with Symbian OS, both 3rd and 5th edition, using C++. Implicitly I prefer development using this language, so I was a little disappointed when I heard that the preferred API for Android is in Java, though the core of Android is linux.

I read in a book that at least some parts of the Java API for android is just a wrapper for C/C++ frameworks. My question to you:

Would it be possible to develop applications in C++ without going through the Java wrapper? As far as I know, the NDK does not provide support for all the features within Android ( for example SQLite, though it's heart is not java ).

I believe it is not impossible ( I've seen some demos of early stages of Qt ported on Android ), but I'm not sure how to approach this. Would these applications be installable via an apk?
