Android : Pass ActivityContext To AsyncTask In Order To Manipulate Views?
Oct 13, 2010
This function runs on the UiThread, but it seems that doesnt mean it also has access to the activity context. Shall I implement to my AsyncTask a public Setter to pass the activity (as reference)?
protected void onPostExecute( Bitmap bitmap ) {
//following is underlined red due to missing context
(ImageView)findViewById(ResId)).setImageBitmap(bitmap);}

This maybe a silly question, but I was wondering how to pass multiple parameters to AsyncTask
I have something like ,code...
I would like to pass in the 3 parameters , I am not sure (1) if it is possible and (2) what the syntax would be .

I use an AsyncTask for loading operations that I implemented as an inner class. In onPreExecute() I show a loading dialog which I then hide again in onPostExecute(). But for some of the loading operations I know in advance that they will finish very quickly so I don't want to display the loading dialog. I wanted to indicate this by a boolean parameter that I could pass to onPreExecute() but apparently for some reason onPreExecute() doesn't take any parameters.
The obvious workaround would probably be to create a member field in my AsyncTask or in the outer class which I would have to set before every loading operation but that does not seem very elegant.

I want to implement a generic, thread save class which takes the RessourceId of an ImageView and the Url (http) where the desired image file is stored. It'll download the image and fills the src of the ImageView in the UiThread.
I thought AsyncTask would be the best thing for me. However I noticed that I only can pass one type of parameters to the doInBackground() Method. Like an Array of Urls. Is that true? What would u suggest me?

I am new to android programming, but I am trying to learn. I have written some code that takes in some parameters through a "normal" view with checkboxes and textviews. Then I use this information to generate a lot of numbers that I want to display in a listview. I have managed to create a listview when I press a run button, but how do I pass the information from the main view to the listview. Is it best to pass the information one number at the time or a large array with all the numbers. The list of numbers can be really large.

I have a layout which has one large EditText view at the top + a bunch of buttons at the bottom. The EditText is made to shrink and expand when the ime is activated/deactivated by using adjust_resize. The buttons at the bottom are pushed up above the ime.
I would like to hide these buttons when the ime displays, to provide enough space for the EditText view.
I have so far tried the following:
subclassed EditText and provided the activity the option to register a callback on the view's OnSizeChanged.
Used this callback to change the visibility of the buttons (actually the layout container) to GONE.
This work OK and does hide the buttons when the ime pops up. However, the EditText does not expand into the new available space. Furthermore, when the ime is disposed off, the EditText field is now bigger than it was originally, pushing (the now showing) buttons outside the screen.
I should also add that when typing the first letter into the view, and the ime displays the word options, the screen is redrawn and the EditText fills the vacant space. how to get this to work? Or even better, is there a simpler solution to my requirement? In my view, scrolling is not a good option.

I'm trying to figure out the correct way to create an AsyncTask to retrieve some data from the internet and then to take that data and bundle it up in an Intent and pass it to a new activity(A list display). So in the first activity I just have an EditText and Button. In the event of an OnClick the task should be called and when it is finished the data should be bundled inside an Intent and passed to the next Activity. The problem is when I take the results from onPostExecute and set them to an instance variable of the main activity, that instance variable is still null when the task is complete. Here is the barebones version of the code:
CODE:...........
When I debug the application I see onPostExecute does contain a valid PlacesList full of results, so why is the instance variable places set to null after the task is executed? I am going about "returning data" from an AsyncTask incorrectly?

I have a simple ListView and on that ListView I have placed a number of custom defined Views. The CustomView has ImageView and two TextViews.
The CustomView also has a "stateful drawable" as background, so that the background image (a 9-patch) changes if you press the Row in the ListView. When pressing the Row, the background image changes to a Red-ish thing.
The problem is that when the background changes from the default greyish, all the Views in the CustomView (ImageView and TextViews) still have their greyish background and thus creates very ugly greay boxes on top of the now redish background.
What is the best way to solve that problem? I hoped that such things were handled automatically (as it is done in for example .NET), but I was wrong it seems.

I am implementing a music player application in Android. My play list selection screen is implemented as a tab selector widget which contains a ListActivity inside each of the tabs: Artist, Albums, Songs.
I want to update the ListView in each of the ListActivity when I delete an item from any of the lists.
i.e. When I long press an item in the Artists list a context menu is drawn with "Delete Artist"
And it should delete all the songs from this artist in the Songs ListView, delete all the albums by this artist in the Albums ListView, and finally delete the entry for the artist in the Artist ListView.
Each of the ListActivity has its own fillData() method, which updates the ListView when the button in the context menu is pressed.
How can I call the fillData() method of the Albums ListActivity after I update the ListView inside of the Artists ListActivity?

I have the following XML code:.................
The idea is to change the views, whenever I press one of the radio buttons. When I press a button the first time everything works out fine, but the second time I press a button, I get an IllegalStateException, and I can't quite see why I'm getting this.
Also, the Activity seems to set all my global variables to null, which is why I have to create them every time I switch from portrait to landscape or vice versa. So I would like to know if there is a way I can save my views in the Bundle, or any other way in which I can permanently save my views, so I don't have to add or create them every time, I flip the phone. And whenever I flip the phone, it seems that it rereads the main XML file, causing the RadioGroup to be set to 2D even if the 3D button is checked. This is because I've said the 2D button to be checked from when the app is first created, but I would like to also save the state of that RadioGroup.

1 - User opens app for the first time ever from android home screen User is presented with "first time" screen (backed by first time activity, lets call it A) User hits back button user is returned to android home screen 2 - User opens app for second time User is presented with the main list screen of the application (backed by a list activity, let's call it B) User hits back button User is returned to android home screen I'm already aware of numerous ways to detect whether it's the first time opening the app or not. The problem is in having the back button return to the home screen rather than a routing activity that decides which screen to forward to.

Is there any way to query a root view of an activity for all of its child views even before the root view or its children have been inflated? I guess what I'm looking for is whether a view knows ahead of time what children it will have before it gets inflated, and can I get that list in some way. Bizarre I realize, but I think it will help me with some unconventional automation testing I'm working on. I haven't found anything in the API like this.

I have a question about working with time in java, more specificly in Android.I am developing a device that needs to check to see if an update with a remote server has been done today. I do this by comparing the time (in milliseconds) at midnight last night/this morning with the current time in milliseconds. so my code is as follows:Calendar now = Calendar.getInstance(); long milliseconds = now.getTimeInMillis(); long since_midnight = milliseconds%(86400000); long checkpoint = (milliseconds - since_midnight); however when I convert the checkpoint variable to date using: SimpleDate Format formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy hh:mm:ss"); last_logged_text=formatter.format(checkpoint);I get a time representational corresponding to 1 am this morning.I realise that this has something to do with daylight savings time but Im unsure how to work around it.

I am working on a simple application (studying purposes) which list all the files from a selected folder. On top of that I would like to have a search feature where the user can search for files (the code for that is already in place). Now, I was thinking about having the search running in the background somehow, whilst the user can still navigate, create folders, copy, sort and do other stuffs normally. When the search finishes the user would get a notification and then could click on it and go to that activity (It ideally should be the same ListView I already use for browsing the files, I would just need to update the Adapter there with the latest processed data after clicking in the notification). What's the best answer for that? Threading or AsyncTask?

Can anyone point me to a good example where a AsyncTask queries a local SQLite database and then updates the UI successfully. I have a database which I query using doInBackground... create a new custom SimpleCursorAdapter (overriding onViewBind), return the adapter (SimpleCursorAdapter), then in postExecute() create ListView adapter which is set to the the SimpleCursorAdapter, that was returned, then I set the listview adapter using SetAdapter(adapter);...
For some reason I throw an exception on fillWindow.java:200....
