Android :: Pass Information Between Views?
Aug 21, 2010
I am new to android programming, but I am trying to learn. I have written some code that takes in some parameters through a "normal" view with checkboxes and textviews. Then I use this information to generate a lot of numbers that I want to display in a listview. I have managed to create a listview when I press a run button, but how do I pass the information from the main view to the listview. Is it best to pass the information one number at the time or a large array with all the numbers. The list of numbers can be really large.

This function runs on the UiThread, but it seems that doesnt mean it also has access to the activity context. Shall I implement to my AsyncTask a public Setter to pass the activity (as reference)?
protected void onPostExecute( Bitmap bitmap ) {
//following is underlined red due to missing context
(ImageView)findViewById(ResId)).setImageBitmap(bitmap);}

I want to get the size of a view that is in my activity but I am not able to get that information in any of the activity lifecycle callbacks (onCreate, onStart, onResume). I'm assuming this is because the views have not been drawn yet. At what point are views drawn and is there a callback I can put my code so I can get the size of the view?

I have a simple ListView and on that ListView I have placed a number of custom defined Views. The CustomView has ImageView and two TextViews.
The CustomView also has a "stateful drawable" as background, so that the background image (a 9-patch) changes if you press the Row in the ListView. When pressing the Row, the background image changes to a Red-ish thing.
The problem is that when the background changes from the default greyish, all the Views in the CustomView (ImageView and TextViews) still have their greyish background and thus creates very ugly greay boxes on top of the now redish background.
What is the best way to solve that problem? I hoped that such things were handled automatically (as it is done in for example .NET), but I was wrong it seems.

I am implementing a music player application in Android. My play list selection screen is implemented as a tab selector widget which contains a ListActivity inside each of the tabs: Artist, Albums, Songs.
I want to update the ListView in each of the ListActivity when I delete an item from any of the lists.
i.e. When I long press an item in the Artists list a context menu is drawn with "Delete Artist"
And it should delete all the songs from this artist in the Songs ListView, delete all the albums by this artist in the Albums ListView, and finally delete the entry for the artist in the Artist ListView.
Each of the ListActivity has its own fillData() method, which updates the ListView when the button in the context menu is pressed.
How can I call the fillData() method of the Albums ListActivity after I update the ListView inside of the Artists ListActivity?

I am a Mac user (photographer/ videographer). I also rely heavily on my iPod Touch when mobile (i can often find a wifi signal when i am out and about). I use iCal on the Touch and iCal on my Mac as well as the address book on both everyday and as a Mobile Me user, my two devices sync so everything is mirrored and up to date. I also HATE AT&T for their terrible signal strength and coverage and have been a loyal Verizon customer for many years and this is why I don't have an iPhone. Okay, all that being said, is there an easy way to still use everything I love and rely on with my Mac (the calender and address book, mainly) and easily sync all of my existing information and future info to an Android based device? How easy is it to use an Android device with a Mac? I don't want to have to manually re-enter my entire address book into a new device.

I have the following XML code:.................
The idea is to change the views, whenever I press one of the radio buttons. When I press a button the first time everything works out fine, but the second time I press a button, I get an IllegalStateException, and I can't quite see why I'm getting this.
Also, the Activity seems to set all my global variables to null, which is why I have to create them every time I switch from portrait to landscape or vice versa. So I would like to know if there is a way I can save my views in the Bundle, or any other way in which I can permanently save my views, so I don't have to add or create them every time, I flip the phone. And whenever I flip the phone, it seems that it rereads the main XML file, causing the RadioGroup to be set to 2D even if the 3D button is checked. This is because I've said the 2D button to be checked from when the app is first created, but I would like to also save the state of that RadioGroup.

Is there any way to query a root view of an activity for all of its child views even before the root view or its children have been inflated? I guess what I'm looking for is whether a view knows ahead of time what children it will have before it gets inflated, and can I get that list in some way. Bizarre I realize, but I think it will help me with some unconventional automation testing I'm working on. I haven't found anything in the API like this.

Let's say I have a LinearLayout, and I want to add a View to it, in my program from the Java code. What method is used for this? I'm not asking how it's done in XML, which I do know, but rather, how can I do something along the lines of (One View).add(Another View) Like one can do in Swing.

Class AddText(extends Activity), Grafitti(extends MapActivity) and MarkerOverlay. Grafitti calls AddText, and AddText opens a new Activity that gets an input from user (EditText), then when that is successful Grafitti calls MarkerOverlay. The problem is I can't access the input in AddText. I need to use that input in MarkerOverlay, I tried creating a setter and getter but it won't work. (error) I've tried searching the web and I think the solution is Bundle. I'm having a hard time understanding how Bundle works. Is there any other way? or any code snippet on how to use Bundle. A code snippet would really help me a lot.

Need some advice from you experts out there. I've just started with Android programming and while I finally got what I want my "Hello World" to do, I feel as if I'm bludgening my way through rather than grasping concepts. I created three EditText boxes. Below those I created three Spinners. Pick a number in the Spinner and it will show up in the corresponding EditText box. Spinner 1 correlates to EditText 1, Spinner 2 to EditText 2 and Spinner 3 to EditText 3. I had a hell of a time getting this to work. I do have some cleaning up to do. Is there a better way to pass or reference resources around various classes?

Is it possible to have the sender's name/number displayed on the lock screen when a text is received? I've got handcent installed and I've got it set up so that when I receive a text, the quick reply box pops up for 10/20 seconds. But if I'm away from my phone and I later check to see if I've received a text, the only indication I have is a small icon on the navigation bar.

For an example, lets say I have a url which returns stats about a certain football team (the team name is a parameter on the url) and it displays the information purely as text (with maybe a bit of text before and after):
Stadium: MyStadium Capacity: 100,000 Shirt Colour: Red
Is anyone able to give me any advice on how I would go about retrieving only the information I need so i can put it into my own format and display it nicer? Would I need an xml parser, would I need the page source code, if so how could I get it?

I'm attempting to create an app that will display usage information for customers of Roger's Wireless(Canada). I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on how to:
1) input Username and Password info directly a web textbox to sign the Customer in, from an EditText View.
2) grab usage information in the form of text or images to display to the user within the app.
Just a pointer in the right direction on what method(s) would do this for me.

I'm developing an app which basically navigates through a xml-feed. When I parse the feed or let's say the list, then each (list)item becomes a model. All the models are wrapped up in an array list. Now, when the user clicks on a list item, the underlying model is going to be serialized and sent as IntentExtra to the next Activity (e.g. a deeper sub list). (Originally I asked here a different question. The solution was not related to Serializable and wouldn't help anybody. However MatteKarla gave an interesting input. Thats why I decided to rewrite this question.)

I've got a problem My app show a first layout like: Gridview1 (3 images in 1 row) ImageView1 (1 image) Gridview2 (3 images in 1 row) ImgaeView2 (1 image) Gridview3 (3 images in 1 row) ImgaeView3 (1 image) When you clik over an image it will be open full screen in a second layout, The problem was that I don't know how to pass the image to the new intent. Now I've the next code:
public AdapterView.OnItemClickListener pulsarImagen = new AdapterView.OnItemClickListener() { public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> arg0, View arg1, int arg2,long arg3) { Intent intent = new Intent(GridViewer.this , GalleryViewer.class); intent.putExtra("id", arg0.getItemIdAtPosition (arg2)); startActivity(intent); //finish(); } };
But the ItemID is always 0. Before I've only one gridview and then I passed the item's position. But now I've 3 different gridviews and I don't know if the position of item selecte it's from gridview 1,2 or 3. I supose that the great solutin it will be to pass the id resource (image) but I don't know how to pass it. Can you help me?
