Android :: OS Push Information About Network Connecting Status To Application?
Mar 4, 2010
I need some advices about the Android OS and application.i wonder if the Android OS is able to push network connecting status to applications.(I found applications can get a network connecting status from android OS. But I can't find reverse cases.)However, I am thinking android OS may push network connecting status to applications.when application is installed on android os, is it possible to register something for monitoring phone's network status on android os.Because I want my application can receive phone's network status from android os.(not by asking directly to android os.) It means: when phone's network status changes, does android os automatically informs phone's network status to application?I'm sorry my English writing is bad TT;

In 1.5, I find an icon in status bar to indicate current network type (2G or 3G). Would you please tell me which app sets this icon in status bar? I'd like to go through the source code.

We've had some people develop and application for us. For now, our application uses static data that requires a manual update each time this data changes. Our plan in the future is to have this data updated automatically the instant this new data is available.
For now, is there a way like through some online cloud that I can link the application to? So, that way when I put the data online in this service thing, the application whenever it has a data connection or Wi-Fi pulls the new data?
For the future, what's the best way to set up this automated updates?

I seem to be seeing an issue with the data network access on the EVO. When it happens none of my applications get internet aceess and my mobile network status says "turning on". The only way I've found to fix it is to pull the battery. Any one else seeing this? If so is there a better fix than pulling the battery?

In my application, I want to collect the surrounding cell ID and LAC on my Android phone (to estimate the location).I use the telephonyManager.getNeighboringCellInfo() function which returns a list of NeighboringCellInfo.
If the phone has enabled the option "use only 2G networks" I receive the correct list but if this option is not enabled (connecting also on 3G networks), the NeighboringCellInfo has "-1" for cell ID and LAC for the whole list.
why 3G networks provides less information than 2G ? Is there some technical reason ? Can I still get the cell details on 3G ?

I need to connect to an institutional wireless network whose only security is achieved thanks to a login webpage. Once I'm connected to the wireless network, the first thing that I can do is to go to the login webpage. The problem is that most applications do not support this kind of login procedure, and therefore find no internet access (`connection problem' is written on my screen when I want to use the wireless network for surfing). Is there a workaround to this.

My university, VT uses two wireless connection, one is manual login and other is auto login Enterprise Network. This is what my university describe about it
"An automatic wireless authentication method using the IEEE 802.1x standard is available. Once configured, there will be no need to manually authenticate with each access to the Virginia Tech wireless network."
This network requires a certificate to be installed on machine. As of now they have support for Windows PCs, MACs and iPhones. Is there any way I can access this wireless network through my Android based phone?

Is there any app or ROM that has been modified to allow for connection to a PC generated Ad Hoc network to allow the phone to use the PC's internet connection? Sometimes called reverse tehtering (through wifi, not usb) or an app that allows USB reverse tethering?I have found several posts that have bits and pieces of the how-to using ADB push/pull of various WIFI related files, but nothing with enough detail for me to figure out.

Basically I was at work today, the reception was okay and I wanted to go on the net. When I tried to turn mobile network on (I normally keep it off to save battery), it just said "connecting" in the dark silver colour and that was it. It didn't turn on at all, until I turned the phone off completely and then the mobile network was on when the phone was re-started. It happened to me twice that day.

We have really bad signal at our place, so we had to buy a network extender, which did a great job.
We recently got Incredibles. On the network extender, when you make a call, it will beep twice to tell you you're connected on it. Which it's still been doing with our new phones.
However, when I was away from home this week, I noticed the incredible still beeps for every call. So I'm wondering if it's even connecting to the extender? We keep getting the infamous reboot at home, so that'd make me think it's not connecting to the extender because our bars are still at 0-1 and we keep rebooting at home. I didn't reboot once in 50 some hours with being away. I usually don't make it to 12 hours while home.
Do I have to do something to set up a new phone? I was positive all I did last time was enter in the phone number.

I have been struggling to make phone calls/send texts/go online without turning on WiFi. My phone rarely connects to the 4G network that I know is strong , because my dad's identical Galaxy S3 is quick to connect to it. My phone rarely connects to Edge either now. When I go into the "Search Mobile Networks" tab my phone just keeps searching and searching... and searching. I thought I had the solution a moment ago when I turned on and off Airplane Mode. My phone connected to 4G for a moment and I was able to send one text, but then it dropped back into nothingness. In addition, it takes nearly 30 seconds to switch into airplane mode after I select it.It's not the sim card because I tried it on a different phone and it works fine. My dad's a cynic when it comes to rooting and he's saying it might be because I rooted my phone, but this issue started two to three weeks after I rooted... is rooting a potential cause?

I am writing an app that connects to a telnet server via wifi. I have a service that manages the socket connection. It all works fine, but when the phone sleeps it disconnects the wifi radio, which causes the socket connection to break (and throws a SocketException). I feel like I should be able to set up a a broadcast receiver whose onResume() method is called when the wifi network connection is lost, and that would allow me to gracefully shut down the socket, and re-open it if the network is immediately re-connected. But I can't find anything like that in the doc or via searching.

I recently bought a HTC Magic. At work, we have a secured wireless network. When connecting to this network, we are asked a username/password for the domain. Now, my question is; With my HTC Magic, how can I connect to the domain network? On my previous HTC (S710 or 720, with WinMob) , it was possible.

This is my first Android phone so I might just not know what I am doing. At work we have an open wi-fi network for patients and visitors to connect to. When they connect for the first time they are automatically re-directed to a sign on page where they must provide their e-mail address. After that they are free to use wireless internet services. My EVO will not re-direct to the page. When I tried it on a friends iPhone it worked just fine. My phone has not been rooted and i have tried both the default browser and two that I downloaded from the market. The phone is connecting to the WiFi and getting a strong signal.

I had installed the "quick settings" app that was mentioned in another thread. When I tried to open it this morning to turn on the mobile network (I usually keep it off at home), a message popped up saying the application was not updated properly and it needed to be removed and reinstalled. I tried to go to settings>wireless controls to turn on the mobile network but that isn't working either. When I look at the button to turn on the mobile network in the settings, it says "standby to connect to mobile network", I click it, it goes away and says "connect to internet" but when I click it again it just tries and then stops after a minute or so. I removed the quick settings app and restarted the phone, but that didn't help. This happened once before and I just connected to WiFi and reinstalled the quick settings app, but now I'm somewhere where I don't have WiFi access. If it matters, I also have a shortcut button installed to turn the mobile network on and off, but that isn't doing anything either. Any suggestions?

At the office, we have a high-speed reliable WiFi network.I don't have problems connecting to it with my macbook and iPod Touch. On my Android phone, I use the toggle switch to turn on/off WiFi to save battery power. My frustration is as follows:* When I use the WiFi setting to check the box to turn on WiFi, it shows that it's available with a strong connection.* It shows "Obtaining address" for a long time period and often fails to actually connect.Status - Obtaining IP address from XXXXX Pulbic WiFi Access and it just sits there with the word "Obtaining..." forever it seems. Sometimes, or often, I can't even get it to connect.Does anyone else have this problem connecting to a strong WiFi network from their device?Suggestions on resolving this matter?

I own a HTC Hero and loving the phone but unfortunately I am having problems connecting to my WiFi network. When I turn on the WiFi on my hero it will not show the SSID name of my network. The odd thing is that when I use WiFi scanner (nice program) it shows my WiFi network SSID, but I cannot connect to my WiFi using that program.

So, There is an issue with my X10. We have a secure (password protected) wireless network at home which is hidden. Now the weird thing is that the x10 doesn't connect to it. When I get a new wireless device, I get the MAC address of the device, and copy it into the wireless manager, so that it's allowed to access the network. Then, i register the same MAC address into the list of machines on the network. Then I set the network to broadcast the SSID, it's still protected, but now everyone can see that it's there. Afterward, I plug the password into the device, and it's connected. Lastly, I stop broadcasting of the SSID, but the machine that was recently added now recognises the network, even though it's hidden. Even after the device has been disconnected, it will still see the network, and be able to connect to it. The weird thing, is that I have done this for all of the wireless devices, even the X10. Everything is fine, until I make the network hidden again. Then, even though the network is saved, it says "out of range".this has only happened with the X10. Does anyone have any insight as to what the problem may be?

Here's my issue- At home, I am having trouble connecting to my secured wireless network (wpa, wap2, tkip) on my EVO. The EVO will show my network, but it won't seem to connect. I've tried restarting my Belkin wireless router, rescanning for networks on my EVO, and making sure I'm entering the correct pasword. Nothing seems to work. But, when I go to my girlfriend's house, I can connect to her unsecured wireless network. I'm thinking it may be the my router's security settings. Even though I have a strong 4G signal in my house, I still like to have the option to use my WiFi network from time to time.
Any thoughts?
Just to give it another try, I disabled my router security and even uninstalled WiFi finder...all of which did not work in establishing a connection. I'm starting to think it's my Belkin router. The only thing though, is that it played well with my Blackberry 8900.

At my college we have this annoying web based login and my android phone doesn't like it. It connects easily but when I go to either browser or opera mobile it doesn't load the login page the browser still thinks it has no connection. Is there anyway to approach this in a better way or bypass the login or at least save it to automatically do it each time.I need a wifi connection! every building has it. annoying this is once you move to a different building the settings are changed(probably because of the routers) and I have to redo it. of course it never works

Anyone have a problem connecting to a network with a hidden SSID? My wife can connect to our router fine with her Droid INc (wireless N router). But i can't unless i enable broadcasting the SSID. I found the hidden SSID enabler app, and going to try that. If that doesn't work does anyone else have any ideas? If i enable SSID broadcast i connect right away. If i disable it, i lose the connection and it is "out of range". Very annoying as i live in a condo unit with 10 other wifi networks in my range. Would like to keep my netwrok as private as possible.
