Nov 27, 2010On my Blackberry I could unlock my phone by typing in a number password of my choosing. Is there an app for that on Android? I've been looking without any luck.

Android :: Password And SQLite Security
Apr 22, 2010Here is what I am trying to figure out:
1) My application is going to have an optional password activity that will be called when the application is first opened.
My questions for this are a) If I store the password via android preference or SQLite database, how can I ensure security and privacy for the password, and b) how should password recovery be handled?
Regarding b) from above, I have thought about requiring an email address when the password feature is enabled, and also a password hint question for use when requesting password recovery. Upon successfully answering the hint question, the password is then emailed to the email address that was submitted. I am not completely confident in the security and privacy of the email method, especially if the email is sent when the user is connected to an open, public wireless network.
2) My application will be using an SQLite database, which will be stored on the SD card if the user has one. Regardless of whether it is stored on the phone or the SD card, what options do I have for data encryption, and how does that affect the application performance?

Nov 12, 2010I'm looking for an app that I can use to password files/apps. For example...my stock Gallery app. I have pictures in there of family, ect that I wouldn't want people to get in case my phone was lost/stolen. Is there such an app?

Feb 2, 2010I am developing an app that uploads files to an FTP server, and the app will have the ftp user name / password in the code. I'm investigating making the FTP user name and password as secure as possible (including an encrypted value for each in a strings.xml and decrypting in the app when it needs to connect to the FTP server).
My concern is this is not actually secure at all, it seems someone could unzip the .apk, decompile it, view the strings.xml and java code that decrypts it - and thereby obtain the ftp login info.
So my question is.. am I approaching this wrong way? Is there a standard method of ensuring passwords that are hard coded into an app can be secure? (note - in this case this is not a password a user of the app would enter, the FTP password is universal to all that install it so it is included in the app).
General :: Password Sync Security Input?
Jan 11, 2014I need to put a good password keeper on my phone. There are many, of course. I want to get one that also has a desktop version. My question is when syncing, what do you feel is more secure? Syncing to a cloud such as Dropbox or straight WiFi sync between my phone and pc?

Sep 23, 2010I upgraded to 2.2 yesterday and download was quick (<5 min) and install was equally quick.
When it rebooted to the new system it required me to establish a security code that comes on when you unlock the phone. I want to disable this function- but in the setting menu the choice to disable is there- but not able to be selected to be modified? Am I just missing something?
BTW: seems like a smart unlock as it only ask for your password if it has slept for a while (which makes me believe there is a setting somewhere that modulates the length of time after sleep that this is activated).

I have password protected the device to stop the phone being used while it is on, but it's really pointless when someone can turn the phone off and just reflash the device.
Granted, they could do that anyway even if i had an offical rom without the recovery image, but it would still be a nice feature if it's possible.

Aug 12, 2010Yesterday i added a security pattern where you have to fill in the pattern when the phone like starts. I took the wrong pattern and have to login with google stuff now. I did login and all stuff, but i get error saying wrong password or username. I checked on google.com that it was correct and it is. Now i do not have Internet checked on before it went to locking so i dunno if its the reason that i do not have the internet connection on it.

I tried the pattern lock thing it has but if a call comes through or a text message comes through it still allows you to answer and/or view the message without entering the lock pattern..

The password screen locks and when it asks for the user name and password it states invalid user name / password!
Is this a known problem since when I called and talked to both Verizon and HTC the only thing they could tell me was to do a hard reset and they weren't aware of this problem?

May 1, 2012I'm new to android but just used the guides at this forum to root my LG Optimus V. I was wondering if now that I have root there is a way to install a boot password similar to the one I have on my computer. Before it loads the operating system, the BIOS asks for a password. Is there any similar functionality for android?
Also, is this possible on other devices even if it is not on mine? It's one of my favorite laymen security measures.

May 24, 2010I've experienced two problems with Google Voice that are causing me to get charged minutes I wouldn't usually get charged. If I can't solve them, I'll have to go back to using my Verizon number. First, let me say that I'm using a new Google Voice number that isn't Verizon cell phone number or any other preexisting number. Second, my girlfriend is on my family plan, but she doesn't have GV yet. We're using the 700-minute plan, so we don't have a friends circle.
Problem 1: When I call my girlfriend's Verizon wireless phone using the GV on my Verizon phone, I get charged, and when she calls my GV number on my Verizon Wireless phone from her Verizon wireless phone, she gets charged. We don't cash in on our free in-network calling. I know, this should have been obvious, but it just never occurred to me until after I looked at the bill. I'd be able to work with that, though, and just select "Call without using Google Voice" or whatever when calling her if it weren't for the second problem. When people call my Google Voice number, I get charged when I don't answer. Usually, it's just a one-minute charge, but sometimes it's two or three minutes (don't know why). With anything less than an unlimited plan, minutes count. Not good.

Feb 15, 2012Basically, i use my personal cell phone for work and personal use, i have multiple exchange accts that keep things sorted and seperated.
recently though i have been getting more and more business calls to my cell phone, during and outside of normal business hours.
what im looking for is an app that will take a selective group of contacts/phone numbers/CID strings and if it is a "business" call then forward it to a specific phone number (external number, the actual business line).
I have seen apps on the market and around that will forward calls to voicemail if they match certain filters, but i cant really seem to find an app that will forward to an external number. Any way I could accomplish this?

Jun 2, 2010I'm selling my house, and my old phone number (which is still active), is on the advertisment signs and MLS. So, I'm going to keep paying my bill month to month for that account until I sell the house.
However, I'd rather not carry around 2 different phones. I did not port my number to my new service as my old number was not "local" to where I live now.
So, I have service with T-mobile and now Verizon with two different numbers. Can I set-up something where anyone who calls my T-mobile number, will ring through to my my Verizon phone/number?

May 12, 2010So I had a question about the security of apps on the market. I read the sticky about it which was very helpful but have a question about a particular app. In my hunt for a good alarm clock app I found "alarm clock plus" which I downloaded and think its a great app but I'm kind of worried about some of the permissions it uses.
They are:
Your Location, coarse (network based) location Network communication, full internet access Phone calls, read phone state and identity System tools, modify global system settings, prevent phone from sleeping
Is there anything here that seems sketchy? I thought it might need location for some sort of weather functionality, but it doesnt have anything like that. And I dont know why it would need full internet access either.
Maybe I am being to paranoid about the whole app security thing, what do you guys think?

I realize that there is a relatively small number of people who would actually try to do such a thing to intercept calls (and potentially data at some point with some tweaks), but assuming that this can easily be done and such, how big of a deal is this really? I'm not too well-versed when it comes to cell phone communications technology, so I'm just curious if anyone here can offer any opinions as far as just how vulnerable this leaves those of us on networks that use GSM like AT&T and T-Mobile. The article mentions that the hacker was only really able to make it work on 2G. Does that mean we're okay as long as our phones show we're on EDGE or 3G?
