I would like play media (video) from a network stream, but the stream comes in a non-standard protocol, so I have to somehow feed Android MediaPlayer with the data only. Is there anyway to do that? I found a few web pages suggesting using a temporary file for the buffered media data etc. but I would like to minimize the I/O usage as much as I can, so I'm looking for a API only solution if there is any? how about JNI? but looks like the permissions going to be an issue with that also.

Feb 1, 2010I emailed myself a video from my phone. Downloaded it to my laptop. its a 3gp extension file. What do I play it with? I suppose that if I manually take it off the SD card, it will be the same extension. How do I deal with these files? VLC, QuickTime did not play it. Windows Movie Maker did not open it either. On a Mac it worked fine and flawlessly.

The so called "default video player" has been uninstalled though. Have cleared cache, clear defaults, clear data for the browser but still do not get a prompt to choose a video player while playing videos from the browser.
Also installed the "Default App Manager" to check for the default video player. However, it indicates no defaults to play any videos (either from file or streaming videos).
(If I play a stored video from phone or SD card, I do get the prompt to choose a video player. But do not get a prompt if playing any video in the browser.)

Dec 29, 2009When playing a video shouldnt the screen not time out?..if your watching something ur not always going to be touching it to keep the screen awake even if u set it to time out in 30 min thats still an issue or am i missing something?

Jul 19, 2010I put the movie Hot Tub Time Machine (.avi) onto my Droid X. Plugged the DX into my computer, selected USB on the phone, and went into DCIM -> Camera -> and dropped Hot Tub Time Machine into there. Now when I play it on my phone it freezes after like 4 secs and the sound goes off.
However, when I go into "edit video" on my phone, I can watch the entire thing with the edit panel and everything. Weird huh? But it wont let me watch it correctly by hitting "play"?

Jun 25, 2010BGR has a video comparison up. The Droid X has much better contrast both indoor and outdoor. The iphone has horrible bloom in highlights outdoors Which crushes all detail. I would even go as far to say that the iPhone video is really bad. Not surpisingly, he declares iPhone the winner because it is 30fps and not 24fps. Personally I couldn't see the difference between the two speeds.

Jun 14, 2010Recently a client asked me to make their site "work on smart phones", which normally wouldn't be too much of an issue... However it's a video site, and I have absolutely no idea where to even begin. Right off the bat I'm not even going to consider allowing the site to even function in anything other than Android (Maybe even 2.0+) and iPhone, maybe Blackberry and WinMo. But beyond that... What do I do? I'm looking at using the tag, however I'm unsure what, if any, codecs which phone uses. Is HTML5 even adopted in their browsers yet?
Could someone please point me in the right direction? Am I going about this the right way, using the tag? Or is there some magical html element both iPhone and Android (And BB and WMo) that lets them run video in their native video players (Like on youtube).
