Im trying to get an object form my SQLite database in my Android application. I know that the contact is in the database because when I add it and try finding by ID, it returns the object. When I try finding by first and last name, though, it throws an exception and Im left with a null reference.

Here is the query:

Ive also tried to find just by first name and just by last name. Same result as above.

The exception is an SQLite exception

Android :: Trying To Launch 2's Gallery- Security Exception

I wonder if this is a bug. This code works on Android 1.x, but fails on 2.x, generating a SecurityException whose explanation seems to have a null String in it where it means to describe the missing permission:

CODE:.............

I think that perhaps the issue is that the classname's prefix (com.android.camera) is not the same as the package name (com.android.gallery).

Can someone comment on what permission (if any) would actually permit this to work on Android 2.x?

The code is thuslike:

Android : Catching Button Behavior - Using OnTouchEvent Method To Capture ACTION_DOWN

Oct 20, 2010

I need to specify the full button images for both the up and down positions. My impression is that the most probable choice is to use an custom button based on the ImageView and specify the image for up and down positions. I am using the OnTouchEvent method to capture the ACTION_DOWN, but I'm not getting the ACTION_UP event.

Is there a better choice for creating a button that controls the full button image, catches the Down/Up and can subdivide the down time into time slices? If not, how do I catch the up event.

My application expects a screen touch on the "button" and not a keyboard action.

Android :: Custom MapView Throwing NoSuchMethodException?

Sep 10, 2010

I'm trying to implement a custom MapView. Inside my MapActivity (named mainmap) I have an inner class which extends MapView:

CODE:........

I have my main.xml formatted to find the inner class like so:

CODE:................

Also, in Androidmanifest.xml, I have the appropriate <uses-library android:name="com.google.android.maps"/> entry.

When I try to run my app, I get (amongst other things) in logcat:

CODE:..............

This is caused by this entry I find in logcat:

CODE:...............

If I understand correctly, my app is crashing because Android is saying it doesn't find the appropriate constructor for my custom MapView (the Lmapview class). As you can see above, however, it is defined and it matches the signature it is looking for.

Android :: FindViewById In A Subclassed SurfaceView Throwing RuntimeException

Oct 9, 2010

This code works fine if I move the findViewById call in to the Activity. Any hints as to why it doesn't work from inside the LearningView class? I've tried moving the TextView inside the com.example.LearningView tag but no joy. I'd prefer to get the TextView from within the SurfaceView subclass as I feel it's more logical to treat the TV as a "child" of the SV.

This is a contrived example I wrote to figure out the problem in a larger application, but the gist of it is the same, and the stack trace is basically the same.

For what it is worth, the findViewById call is returning null, which obviously threw NullPointerExceptions in some attempts to fix this.

As you can probably gather from my attempts I'm flying blind on this one.

Android :: GL DEBUG_CHECK_GL_ERROR Throwing UnsupportedOperationExceptions For Things That Work

Sep 12, 2009

I turned on DEBUG_CHECK_GL_ERROR for my GLSurfaceView to try to figure out why I'm having a problem on pause/ resume/reload everything, and when I turned it on, I got an UnsupportedOperationException when calling GL11.glGenBuffers() (for creating Vertex Buffer Objects).

Why is it saying that operation is unsupported when:

1) The vertex_buffer_object extension is listed on the target device and my code checks for it before trying to use VBOs.

2) VBOs are working correctly (and really well might I add).

This is on a G1. Yes, I know the G1 is only OpenGL ES 1.0 compliant and I'm trying to use a 1.1 extension, but if the phone lists the extension, doesn't that mean I can use it? Also - the extension works! Does this mean that it works but use-at-your-own-risk, kinda like how SoundPool was in Android 1.0?

Android :: Does MotionEvent.getEdgeFlags() Ever Return Anything Other Than 0

Nov 14, 2009

I was expecting the getEdgeFlags() method of MotionEvent to tell me when a MotionEvent had reached the edge of something, but the value returned from getEdgeFlags() is *always* zero. Is this the expected behavior? The documentation says that the flags indicate when a touch has reached the edge of the display. I've tried this on a real device and in the emulator, and the location coordinates never quite reach the edge of the display, and getEdgeFlags() always returns 0. By "never quite reach" I mean that if dragging a finger off the left edge of the display, the smallest X I got was 2. Reaching the edge of the view doesn't seem to change the value returned either.

I suppose I could set the flags myself using setEdgeFlags() using calculations with known dimensions of the object whose edges I care about. Is that how it's supposed to be used? Is this broken for now?

Android :: GetPressure Vs GetSize For MotionEvent

Sep 10, 2009

Debugging on my G1 phone, I am trying to use android.view.MotionEvent.getPressure() and MotionEvent.getSize().

For MotionEvent.getSize(), I always get 0 (the documentation says it returns a value ranging from 0 to 1;

For MotionEvent.getPressure(), it seems to me this actually reflects the real finger touch size, as opposed to "pressure"; for me, I get values range from 0 - 0.63.

Am I missing anything or is it a known bug of the SDK?

Android :: Strategies For Using Touchscreen MotionEvent Coordinates

Mar 17, 2010

I'm writing a simple tile based game using a canvas and a 5X5 grid of tiles. To determine if a tile is clicked I look at the MotionEvent supplied by onTouch. I get the coordinates when MotionEvent.event is ACTION_UP and translate to tiles. This works great on the emulator but when I touch on a device the actual coordinates of the touch register higher than I'd expect as a end user.

I'm wondering what strategies people have used to get a closer to "expected" result. Do you use a simple Y offset? Do you average the coordinates over the life of the touch? Do you use other methods?

Android :: MotionEvent HistorySize And Multiple Pointers

Aug 22, 2010

I couldn't find a definite reference for the size of a MotionEvents history, when there are multiple pointers. The reference says that if you use a getHistorical* function, you might pass it a history position which is somewhere between [0..getHistorySize()-1]. But in a lot of examples handling multitouch if there are multiple pointers they only use history positions between [0..getHistorySize()/ getPointers()-1] (so they divide the history's size with the number of pointers). Which one is the correct way?
