Android :: Looking For A Multi-tap Software Keyboard
Dec 19, 2009
Does anyone know about a software keyboard that would replicate the experience of using an old-style phone keypad, without the predictive stuff?
I mean one where you could tap a button once for A, twice for B, three times for C? (similarly the next key would be 1=D, 2=E, 3=F, etc.)
I would think this would have the advantage of being much more accurate than the standard keyboard (where it can be a little tricky to hit the right key), whilst avoiding the unpredictability of predictive texting (with this scheme, you always get an 'O' when you press the '6' area 3 times, you don't have to worry about the software trying to second-guess what you might have wanted).
I've tried out a number of apps, handycent keyboard is in the right direction, but does the predictive stuff; slidetype is a nice idea, but still not totally convinced...

As we've all heard countless times, the Droid supports multi touch capabilities, but does not include them in the onboard software. Are any Dev's out there working on a multi touch capable software keyboard? I'm sure the majority of the Droid-owning population would shell out $$ for one...that should be incentive enough.

Ok so I know you can make your own skins in Better Keyboard and change the buttons around to your liking. As shown here on the Gum and Oil Slick skins respectively. My question is can I put a button there that access the Settings of Better Keyboard, specifically toggles the "Muli-Tap" setting. Alternatively I would be curious if a button like the one in the bottom "?123" could be changed to say bring up the full Qwerty when in Compact Qwerty, or even vice-versa.

I'm sure there is a learning curve to the HTC/Android keyboard. I have an iPod Touch so I feel I have some bad habits to break. While typing fast I find I often miss the space key, (I hit the space but it does not register.) Upon closer examination I realized it has everything to do with lack of multi-touch. If my left thumb is not off the last key fast enough the space bar will not be registered with my right. (if that makes sense.)I'm definitely loving the extra space and I feel like I'm just one hang-up away from being a very fast typer.

I've been loving this HTC keyboard that I've downloaded from xda forum, but the only concern that I have is the fact that I don't have a multi-touch on my HTC keyboard. HTC keyboard apk with multi-touch enabled?

I'm just wondering on the consensus here.I think the screen is so large that it is actually harder to type with Swype and easier to type on the touch keyboard in landscape mode. What are your guys thoughts? I keep switching back and forth.

I don't get the point. What's the benefit of a multi touch keyboard over a regular keyboard or swype? You can hold down one key, but it still recognizes the other keys? So what? What am I missing?

Check me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't the 2.1 update for the Droid supposed to include multi-touch on the keyboard? Mine definitely doesn't appear to have this functionality (as observed while holding down one key and pressing another one). Does this mean I have to go back to Better Keyboard and some other such app? Am I missing something here?

Every time that I try to install an apk file, the phone says "Installing" then it says "Application Not Installed".
I am trying to get the Droid X's multi touch keyboard on my Fascinate. Has anyone tried to do it? Does it work for you? How did you do it?

So I have the Droid X but I noticed that the Droid 2 now has a themed version of Swype to fit in with the rest of the UI. I like it a lot.
My question is this. When you push the voice-to-text button does it pop up a window like earlier versions of Swype or does it do the really fast and slick thing that the multi touch keyboard does (just replace the keyboard with the audio waveform thing).

For those of you that are familiar with better keyboard. I was wondering about an easy way to switch from the t9 keyboard to the regular qwerty keyboard. I was under the impression that swiping left would toggle between the 2 but all that does is bring me to the numbers and symbols keyboard. I've been changing back and forth to the android keyboard because its faster than going into the better keyboard settings.

I tried it and it works so far.
Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.
From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers
Verbage:
Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
The app is still in development.

I would like to play around with some ideas and develop a soft keyboard for Android to replace the default one.
Is there any general information about soft keyboard development for Android out there?
Any best practices or guidelines?
Can I do with my keyboard application pretty much anything I could do with a normal Android application?
Can I do HTTP connections to synchronize keyboard data with a cloud DB and other phones I have?
Can I open other windows/screens from a key press, e.g. to display a custom input interface different to a normal QWERTY one. If that doesn't work, can I use a pop-up dialog instead?

How to detect if the phone has a physical keyboard, and not an on screen software keyboard? The reason I need to do this is because my app needs multiple keys pressed simultaneously, and this isn't possible with an on screen keyboard.

I have a tabbed view with one Activity per tab, and when I switch from the first tab, which has a TextView, to the second tab, which only shows a clickable list, the soft keyboard is still there. I want it to go away.
I tried this:
CODE:.............
But this does not work, because there is no relevant view to provide, as there is no View on the screen that takes keyboard input.

I am new in Android and i am working to make an on-screen keyboard which can be visitable via arrow(direction) keys of my external keyboard. I mean i wanna move left, right, up and down in the on-screen keyboard's UI (keys) with pressing arrow keys from my external(hardware) keyboard. The key that cursor is on should be focused, when i press an arrow key from my external keyboard the focused key should change and when i press "enter" from my external keyboard it should be operated.(written to the screen etc.) How can i make this? Is there any idea? How can i make virtual keyboard's keys visitable? It doesn't look like moving around a matrix of buttons.

I'm getting the G1 next weekend and am wondering how long until a virtual keyboard will be available. I really like the idea of having a full slide-out keyboard but I would also like a virtual one so if I'm not wanting to say much I can just use the virtual keyboard or if I'm in an area where it needs to be quiet I don't need to have the sound of the keyboard sliding open.

Samsung Canada is wanting to develop an android app for the OS and its galaxy phone line. Our development team suggested an idea, the Multi-Cam Director App. The more votes/comments/likes the app gets, the greater chance it has to be funded and made. Take a look below and support the android development community! "Presenting the Multi-Cam Director app for Android. This app can pull live videos captured from devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant in real time and edit them together in a fast and seamless manner. The best part? You can create vibrant and high definition quality videos about anything (concerts, news, events, parties) right on the device and upload them to You Tube, Face book, etc. in an instant." Check out the app on Multi-Cam Director and follow us on twitter @vansung.

Is this possible to do? 2- I do not want the user to be able to use the back button, to navigate between pages, users must only use the buttons available in my application to navigate?

I am getting this multi-touch events in my application for which the logs are shown below.Multitouch is not working in my application.Does it mean that there is some problem with framework or my application.
Sequence:Just two fingers pressed to the screen, dragged and then lifted both.
Inputdevice: ID[0] Down
Inputdevice: ID[0] Down
Inputdevice: ID[1] Up
Inputdevice: ID[0] Up
I think for the last event it should have been ID[1] instead of 0?? Am i right? Is it a framework problem or some problem with my application?

Ok So I've gone through several tutorials on the web. I understand how the pointerCount works , I can get two points, etc, etc. My problem is I am trying to implement a game control, i.e. dpad and some buttons. The "buttons" are actually TextView objects with images. I Implement OnTouchListener Interface. my onTouch Method gets called when it should. The problem is if I have finger #1 on button a then press finger #2 on button b my OnTouch() method is called with the view of button a, not button b. Fine then I will just get the bounds of the buttons and see if they intersect with the points clicked. No luck, It seems as though the points that come in the MotionEvent are not relative to 0,0 , but to some other coordinate system. I would have thought all points were relative to upper left of screen.
Here is my code.
CODE:.................
