Android :: Looking For Keyboard App To Install
Jun 29, 2010
I'm obviously new to the Android but not necessarily to HTC.
I've had my HTC Hero 1.5 for a little over a month and absolutely love it and all that it's capable of. I mean there is truly "an app for that" for whatever "that" may be.
However, I'm struggling a bit w/it's default keyboard. Not the landscape option either.
I guess my little fingers are a bit to wide for the touch screen leaving me to constantly mess up whatever it is I'm typing. And, having the auto-correction, word completion or word suggestion feature on doesn't help. These only frustrate me more.
I've seen PLENTY of keyboard apps to replace this but, I'm wanting to choose the best one and not sure which one this would be.
Can someone please recommend the best keyboard app to install that will be efficient, bug free and moderately priced?

Anyway while trying out ROMS today I tried the default android keyboard and I have to say. I LOVE IT. It completely owns the hero keyboard that came with my rogers htc magic. Anyway I basically want to know how to install the original android keyboard on other ROMS.

I was wandering if it possible to install the default android keyboard on the Desire? Don't get me wrong, I love the HTC keyboard but am just trying out a couple of different keyboards out of interest.
So i anyone knows a link the the apk that would be brilliant. Just to clarify, I mean the one with black keys. I tried searching but could only find a modified version of the HTC one.

Alot of people seem to have continuous problems installing the HTC keyboard, so last week rosered asked me to write a fool-proof step-by-step guide for those users. So after getting back from my short vacation I decided to write a step-by-step guide which also includes screenshots to make it easier for you First of all I will explain how to install the original HTC keybaord, then I will tell you where to customize your own HTC keyboard for those of you that prefer it customized How to install the HTC keybaord on your Xperia X10Before you start, make sure your phone is set to allow apps from unknown sources. To enable this, go to Settings > Applications and make sure Unknown Sources is checked 1. Download the HTC Keyboard here2. Open the zip archive and copy the files to your desktopAT&T users will not be able to install this keyboard using steps 3-8 as they cannot side load apps. If you are an AT&T user, scroll down to see the instructions at the bottom of this guide explaining how to install the HTC keyboard. When you have done that, go to step 9 3. Connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable, drag down the notification bar on your Xperia and tap "USB COnnected" then tap "Mount". Alternatively, some people prefer to slide the SD card into a Memory Card slot on your computer4. Copy the HTC Keyboard files from your desktop, into a directory on your phone that you will remember (in my example I will use the 'downloads' directory5. Disconnect your phone from the usb cable (or put the SD card back into your phone if you used a memory card.

I was reading about the ability to add what some consider to be a "better" keyboard for their Android phone (HTC's default keyboard ?) and how to install it. From what I can tell, this keyboard is what us with Eris phones already have.... See here: Get a Better Android Keyboard, No Rooting Required - Android - Lifehacker
That said, what does the default/standard Android keyboard look like and is it available somewhere/somehow to install ?
I tried the (Google ?) keyboard available from the market (AnySoftKeyboard) but didn't like it.

I remember seeing somewhere in the x10 section a post regarding instructions to install a better keyboard on our x10's. I am enjoying swype, but would also like to have a "regular" keyboard that works better than the preinstalled ones. Can anyone direct me to the thread, or a site with instructions? Does the phone need to be rooted?

Considering moving from the Droid 2 to the Droid X. I cant really make up my mind, but I dont really like the D2, but I cant really explain why. I think its the form factor itself. Portrait keyboarding isnt good with my big thumbs, the screen is narrowish.
Anyhow, played with one at the Verizon Store last night. Wish they had one without the damn teather cord on it LOL. I noted on the landscape-keyboard, the spacebar is all the way on the right. Is it possible to install a new soft-keyboard thats more traditional?
Still struggling,

I've just come back from Hong Kong where I bought an X10 mini.
I've changed the language to English and it works well, however the keyboard is the Chinese one.
Is there an easy way to remove this keyboard and install an English one instead?

I am new to the whole rotting thing, I installed the bugless beast on my droid 2 days ago and everything went great and it worked fine, I'm just having an issue with it being really lagy at times and the biggest problem is that it freezes everytime I open or close the keyoard, I have to forse close and wait for it to load everything up again, a message is desplayed and it says:
The application launcher+(process android.process.acore) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Then I hit forse close, it usually only happens when I open or close the keyboard but sometime it will happen at random. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it.

For those of you that are familiar with better keyboard. I was wondering about an easy way to switch from the t9 keyboard to the regular qwerty keyboard. I was under the impression that swiping left would toggle between the 2 but all that does is bring me to the numbers and symbols keyboard. I've been changing back and forth to the android keyboard because its faster than going into the better keyboard settings.

I tried it and it works so far.
Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.
From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers
Verbage:
Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
The app is still in development.

I would like to play around with some ideas and develop a soft keyboard for Android to replace the default one.
Is there any general information about soft keyboard development for Android out there?
Any best practices or guidelines?
Can I do with my keyboard application pretty much anything I could do with a normal Android application?
Can I do HTTP connections to synchronize keyboard data with a cloud DB and other phones I have?
Can I open other windows/screens from a key press, e.g. to display a custom input interface different to a normal QWERTY one. If that doesn't work, can I use a pop-up dialog instead?

How to detect if the phone has a physical keyboard, and not an on screen software keyboard? The reason I need to do this is because my app needs multiple keys pressed simultaneously, and this isn't possible with an on screen keyboard.

I have a tabbed view with one Activity per tab, and when I switch from the first tab, which has a TextView, to the second tab, which only shows a clickable list, the soft keyboard is still there. I want it to go away.
I tried this:
CODE:.............
But this does not work, because there is no relevant view to provide, as there is no View on the screen that takes keyboard input.

I am new in Android and i am working to make an on-screen keyboard which can be visitable via arrow(direction) keys of my external keyboard. I mean i wanna move left, right, up and down in the on-screen keyboard's UI (keys) with pressing arrow keys from my external(hardware) keyboard. The key that cursor is on should be focused, when i press an arrow key from my external keyboard the focused key should change and when i press "enter" from my external keyboard it should be operated.(written to the screen etc.) How can i make this? Is there any idea? How can i make virtual keyboard's keys visitable? It doesn't look like moving around a matrix of buttons.

I'm getting the G1 next weekend and am wondering how long until a virtual keyboard will be available. I really like the idea of having a full slide-out keyboard but I would also like a virtual one so if I'm not wanting to say much I can just use the virtual keyboard or if I'm in an area where it needs to be quiet I don't need to have the sound of the keyboard sliding open.

Followed the instructions in http://developer.android.com/sdk/adding-components.html for adding 2.0 as components to an existing 1.6 SDK, from within Eclipse.
It didn't work. Not by a long shot. Instead, it got partway through and then said that C:android-sdk-windows-1.6_r1 tempDocPackage.new01 couldn't be copied because of a lock, and similarly for PlatformPackage.new01.
It said to shut down running programs, but the only program running was Eclipse, which was needed to do the upgrade.
The cancel button was disabled, and the close box didn't work. Shutting down Eclipse killed it, but left C:android-sdk-windows-1.6_r1 in a corrupted state. Restarting Eclipse showed the Android projects with errors, no SDK, and a disabled Android SDK and AVD Manager (which means no ability to rerun the install).
Shutting down Eclipse, renaming the corrupted SDK directory, unzipping 1.6 again into C:, and restarting Eclipse made it as if nothing had ever happened, which is good. But it is not possible to complete the install from Eclipse, which is bad.
The dialog says:
CODE:..............

When I run my application on a physical phone from within Eclipse, my Google MapView works perfectly. If export the app to an apk file and install it to the same phone from the command line with adb then the MapView comes up but shows only the Google logo and grid - no map tiles appear. I'm using a debug application key and a GMaps API key generated with that debug key. I've verified that this happens on both the Droid and N1 phones. The logcat looks identical in both the working and non-working cases - no obvious error messages.

Yes we have threads about this already but we still have not gotten an answer AND I think it's about time somebody at least explain what does this number actually MEAN. I'm getting frustrated with the lack of transparency on this.
My apps used to be around 56% active installs
VERY soon after I updated the apps to allow install to SDCARD (preferExternal), then the active install count started dropping like a rock. Now it's around 39% today for my main app.
My opinion is there is a bug in the SDCARD install feature somewhere that is not counting those installs. We know there already is a bug with home screen icons if you install to sdcard you will get a blank icon until the Home app restarts.
