Has anyone found any good tools to design the actual screens? I am not looking for a mock-up tool... but an actual tool to create the XML layouts.
I am finding that my layouts tend to look great in one orientation but if I change the phone's orientation, things are a mess. For example on one screen I have 6 large buttons that look great in portrait orientation but if the user changes phone orientation, those buttons get cut off in portrait.
Do I need to code two layouts for every screen - one for portrait and one for landscape? That would be such a waste of time.
I am working on a project for which I have formulated a fairly complex layout but I have no earthly idea how I could implement such a thing. Attached is an image of what I'd like it to look like, can anyone think of a way to generate such layout?

How should one design the layout for these tablets?
I'm asking if anyone else has had the same problem as me. After about a week of having my phone I found the charging socket would only work intermittently. I had to push the cable towards the front to get it to work.
I duly called orange customer services and they arranged a courier to switch it for a brand new one, top job there, I'm not sure how long that warrenty lasts though.
Now the new one, arrived precisely 5 hours and 31 minute ago, I placed it on charge very carefully and waited for the light to go green. I unplgged it and messed around with setting apps and home screen and the like to get it how I want it and plugged it into my laptop to transfer some ringtones accross...
I am going to develop an Android Application but before developing it i needs to have MockUp for the Android Application,so is there any way to design MockUp/GUI Design tool for the Android Application?
I know about DroidDraw tool , but i think it is not the exact way to prepare Mockup for the android application.
I have already referred this SO Question , but overthere i just found all the tools for the I-Phone only. So please feel free to share with me if you have/found any !
Can anyone here let me know if there is a way to have a backup where it keeps the layout of your screens, i have backup pro, and titanium, but neither will set the screens up for me, or am i missing something here?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile developing for Android, I am unable to open more than one main.xml file in an Eclipse editor at a time. Each time I open one, it simply replaces the editor (tab) of the first main.xml with the new one, instead of opening a new tab - even if the contents of the existing tab were unsaved.Even stranger, I can open multiple main.xml files from different projects with no problems. This only happens when they're within the same project.

Is it possible to build a GridView object in XML with 3 columns and 4 rows of Image buttons? It doesn't seem to have similar containment relationship like LinearLayout or RelativeLayout viewgroups.
I want to do this entirely in an xml layout file. When I put ImageButton xml tags inside a GridView xml body, The layout panel in eclipse is throwing an exception: UnsupportedOperationException:addView(View, LayoutParams) is not supported in AdapterView.

I am using eclipse 3.5 with the ADT plugin.when I view layout xml files, i get two tabs in the view the source code view and a graphical view.the graphical view almost never works for any of my layouts.it usually shows "NullPointerException: null" at the top and nothing else. when it does work, it often does not match what i get in the simulator or device.it seems like this thing simply is not ready for prime time; although the idea is very cool.has anyone else had much success with it?

I've successfully created a countdown kitchen timer activity, however my goal is to have an activity that has 3 timers on it that all work independently. I created a separate layout just for the timer itself and moved the timer code into a class and I've used layoutinflater to create the views and then added them into the linear layout for the activity. I get the layouts fine, however there's no functionality. There doesn't seem to be anything that ties the class code to the activity. How should I approach this? Can anyone point me to some working example code?

View 1 Replies View RelatedImagine I have a toolbar implemented as a horizontal LinearLayout as follows:
[___Button1____] [___Button2___] [___Button3___] [___Button4___]
When someone clicks on Button2, I want the toolbar to change to:
[___Button1____] [___________Button2___________] [___Button3___]
The toolbar should transition from the first state to the second state through a smooth animation. I would like to use a scale animation on Button2, and while that is happening, Button3 and Button 4 should move to the right (while the animation is going on). At the end of the animation (or maybe during), I will fade Button4 out.
Question: How do I achieve an animation of the layout of the toolbar such that only one component (i.e. Button2) is being scaled while the others are not being scaled - the layout is simply updated during the animation of Button2.
I looked at LayoutAnimationController, but it does not appear to allow me to either:
1. specify different animations for the different components, OR
2. indicate that only animate one component and don't animate the others.
I can't scale the entire toolbar because that distorts Button1/3/4 which I don't want.
I'm kind of new to android development.I have read from many sources that findViewById() is a "costly" operation. I'm making an application that deals with 5 TextViews to provide different kinds of information (distance, duration, title, description, etc) from a database. I'm using listeners to catch touch/click events and feedbacks a handler. The main function of the handler is to received a "position" in the Cursor where the new information needs to be displayed. I mentioned earlier that findViewById() is a "costly" operation. So, I don't call this method in the handler. Doing so, it will retrieve every time the Views when user touchs/clicks some widget. Is it right to populate the Activity with private members of the Views/Layout it displays? I mean, I don't like it. I don't know why, but seems that I'm populating too much the activity. I'm aware of the android:onClick xml attribute, but in my case I also use long click listeners. So, a piece of onCreate() looks like: And all of those are private members, wihout mention the "cursor.getColumnIndex()" for each. I thought on implementing Handler.Callback and set on the Hanlder.Callback constructor implementer a View array or a View list or something, but I also need this objects later to set other listeners and setups. Is this right? I cannot think another way, as I need the reference to the object, and also the Cursor reference that the handler will move to the "position" provided and update the correspondent View. I will really appreciate either an advice or a useful link/info/doc to read in what concern in this kind of designs. What I do not like is that It looks like imperative programming filling the Activity with "global" variables.
View 6 Replies View Relatedin Android code, It is a very strange concept to define the APN type (APN_TYPE_MMS). The reason are: 1) APN only is an access pointer, it haven't any special attribute for MMS or other things. 2) Only Application care the APN name, since different APN will provide different service from operator. for example, operation may provide Email/MMS/GPS/.... service on different APN. 3) Android only define one type APN_TYPE_MMS, this will limit other top application usage. Any one can answer me why Android design this way? If google have strong reason for such design, I hope add other user defined type like APN_TYPE_USER1 APN_TYPE_USER2 then top application can set his property to use its APN other than APN_TYPE_MMS
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am a developer and recently completed the implementation of my keyboard MessagEase. It's available on the Market (with its very- different features, making it quite unlike QWERTY).
This keyboard works fine as a replacement of the standard keyboard on an Android Phone. But for a An Android Tablet, it would work best if it's implemented as a floating, movable keyboard.
(the footprint of this keyboard is mostly dependable on the size of a human's finger; it remains the same even if the tablet's display is much larger than a phone's. Therefore it'll take a relatively smaller area on a tablet.)
If I use the current SDK hooks, it will have to take a significant portion of the screen, defeating the purpose.
I have a service running that grabs the users attention with a notification. What i would like to happen when the user clicks on the notification is for it to launch a dialog box. The "proper" thing to do is to launch an activity in this way, so is there a way to get an activity to launch with out filling the screen? So it looks like a dialog box?

I was wondering if its possible to design android icons using a 3d modelling package like blender? i know i have to stick to the guidelines documented already, but was just wondering if anyone had come across or done something similar? Its that little part of the icons(launchers) being able to have a slight perspective and looking through the requirements to design icons it seems i might be a lot faster using a 3d modelling package and then following part of the icons template guide(based from my requirement though!).
