HTC Desire :: Possible Design Flaw

May 16, 2010

I'm asking if anyone else has had the same problem as me. After about a week of having my phone I found the charging socket would only work intermittently. I had to push the cable towards the front to get it to work.

I duly called orange customer services and they arranged a courier to switch it for a brand new one, top job there, I'm not sure how long that warrenty lasts though.

Now the new one, arrived precisely 5 hours and 31 minute ago, I placed it on charge very carefully and waited for the light to go green. I unplgged it and messed around with setting apps and home screen and the like to get it how I want it and plugged it into my laptop to transfer some ringtones accross...

HTC EVO 4G :: Design Flaw - Intentional Feature

Oct 22, 2010

I noticed something on the Evo, which made me question whether is was a light leakage design flaw, or was it implemented feature.. With the lights off in a dark room, take a look at your Evo. DO you see how the charge port lights up, while the HDMI port doesn't? It seams to be an even glow, as though not a crack in the hardware which lets a little light through, so do my question is, do you think its a design flaw was it intentionally implemented?

I find this very useful, as I plug my evo in in complete darkness very often, and its all gravy that the port lights up when the screen is lit.

HTC EVO 4G :: Physical Damage Or Design Flaw

Sep 10, 2010

So you all know how HTC oddly designed this phone to have it rest on the camera lens. Well my lens is cracked. Not sure when or how it happened. I wont even say it cracking wasn't my fault. Likely was. However I do have insurance and the repair part of it too. I pay 7 dollars a month.

Well took my phone into Sprint and they told me they couldn't repair the lens because it's considered physical damage and if they repaired it it would void the warranty agreement they have with HTC.

So my question is why do I pay an extra 3 dollars a month for repairs when they can't even repair my phone?

They call it physical damage I call it design flaw. They said I would have to file a claim with Asurion and pay 100 deductible to get a replacement phone. Well I dont want a replacement phone. Mine works flawlessly. I dont want to get rid of it. Let alone why would someone in their right mind pay 100 dollars for just a cracked piece of plastic or glass the size of a dime?

Motorola Droid X :: Speaker - Design Flaw - Fixable

Jul 18, 2010

Lot's of talk about the speaker volume/tone on the Droid X.

I too am a bit concerned with the speaker volume and tone on my Droid X.

I did a test. Droid X vs. Garmin Nuvi GPS - Google Nav vs. Garmin built in maps.

I plotted a route across town and fired up both units in my car. I turned on my car radio. I started to drive.

Results:
1. The Garmin was louder and clearer than the Droid X when speaking turn by turn instructions.

2. The Garmin was loud enough while listening to the radio.

3. The Droid X was not loud enough to be heard over the radio(volume set to max).

I don't want to plug my Droid X into the AUX on the radio because I then lose use of the radio.

Is this a hardware issue in the Droid X or something that can be fixed by a software update?

HTC Incredible :: Possible 2.2 Flaw

Sep 7, 2010

Is anyone else experiencing certain apps defaulting to landscape mode once they are opened even if you're holding the phone in portrait? I have noticed this since updating to 2.2. Especially with Handcent and the Market. At first I thought it might be an issue with the application but then I noticed it also happens when I select something from the notification bar, the bar will default to landscape mode for a second on two before correcting itself.

HTC EVO 4G :: Calendar Flaw

Jul 20, 2010

I am experiencing 2 major flaws with the HTC phone calendar NOT google calendar and am wondering am I missing something...

1) Again, on the stock phone calendar itself, when I set an event with a start date of lets say today until aug 9th and I select once a week, it shows that event everyday and indefinitely so in other words it doesn't end on Aug 9th. It keeps going and going...

2) Is there not an option to set 2 days every week. I used to have it on my palm pre and it worked flawlessly. For instance, I have classes on mon and wed but I can't find an option to set it for both those days.

Android :: Email Flaw

Jul 22, 2010

I have noticed a flaw in Android, When connecting to an IMAP server Doesn't matter if it is Exhange or Unix the Android Email client will not close the connection. In order for IMAP to work correctly a client makes a conneciton and gets updates. If a connection to the IMAP server is left opened you will not see any new updates.

Step by step on how it should work.

Example will be Exchange server:

Create a new connection point to your IMAP server (Exchange) port 143 (cleartext) or 993 (Secure) add username: John Doe Add Domain: *Optional with VPN Password: ************** SMTP server (Exchange)

How often to login and check 5 10 15 30 1hr Logout after checking email YES/NO (Ding ding ding grand prize winner option here)

This is a simple fix for Google engineers to fix, they should include it in their next rev.

HTC Incredible :: Zero-day Flash Flaw

Sep 14, 2010

I can't be the first person to claim this, but I do think I have become infected by some type of virus or malware. I recently downloaded the new flash player for Android, which I'm told has this new security flaw. Today I noticed for the first time while I was browsing the Internet that it appears as though someone has taken over my browser. They were scrolling up and down, left and right, and even tabbing (sounds like they're on an actual machine) through the various hyperlinks on the page. Later, I was in my gmail app, and the same thing. I opened up an HTML email, and it was scrolling, and tabbing through links in the email. I immediately shut down my phone. I have three anti-virus software apps running, and scanned with all - no issues. Does anyone have a recommendation for what I should do - and what I should be worried about? The first thought that came to mind was log back on and uninstall anything related to Flash / Adobe Reader... however if I'm already infected, does it matter? Should I wipe my HTC incredible? What about the storage card? If they're smart, I assume they put something there since they know most have no idea how to wipe that.

HTC Incredible :: No More Grounding Flaw With Leaked Froyo ROM

Jul 28, 2010

I just realized that for the past 30 minutes or so, I had my phone sitting on my comforter while I was tweaking it after installing the leaked Froyo ROM, and it was working!

Before I installed this ROM, my phone would NEVER work while sitting on my comforter without touching a finger to the side (the whole grounding issue).

It sure seems as if this update contained a fix for the grounding issue (like the EVO had a while back IIRC).

Is it possible to password protect the recovery image; where we flash our roms ect...?

I have password protected the device to stop the phone being used while it is on, but it's really pointless when someone can turn the phone off and just reflash the device.

Granted, they could do that anyway even if i had an offical rom without the recovery image, but it would still be a nice feature if it's possible.

Android :: SECURITY FLAW - Google Voice Actions Usable On Lock Screen?

Oct 13, 2010

I just noticed yesterday accidentally that you can press and hold the search button on the lock screen and perform anything Google Voice Actions is capable of. I am using a Droid 2 unrooted. This may affect the Droid X as well. This is a huge security flaw in Motorola's modified pattern/PIN lock screen. Hopefully this thread garnishes enough attention so that this can be patched soon! Steps to reproduce:

1. Lock your screen
2. Press and hold the search button "magnifying glass"
3. Speak any voice action and the phone will respond. Note: you will not get any visual or audible cues (in Google Voice Actions) that it is working, but it is!

Android :: Looking For A Design Tip / Advice / Doc

Aug 2, 2010

I'm kind of new to android development.I have read from many sources that findViewById() is a "costly" operation. I'm making an application that deals with 5 TextViews to provide different kinds of information (distance, duration, title, description, etc) from a database. I'm using listeners to catch touch/click events and feedbacks a handler. The main function of the handler is to received a "position" in the Cursor where the new information needs to be displayed. I mentioned earlier that findViewById() is a "costly" operation. So, I don't call this method in the handler. Doing so, it will retrieve every time the Views when user touchs/clicks some widget. Is it right to populate the Activity with private members of the Views/Layout it displays? I mean, I don't like it. I don't know why, but seems that I'm populating too much the activity. I'm aware of the android:onClick xml attribute, but in my case I also use long click listeners. So, a piece of onCreate() looks like: And all of those are private members, wihout mention the "cursor.getColumnIndex()" for each. I thought on implementing Handler.Callback and set on the Hanlder.Callback constructor implementer a View array or a View list or something, but I also need this objects later to set other listeners and setups. Is this right? I cannot think another way, as I need the reference to the object, and also the Cursor reference that the handler will move to the "position" provided and update the correspondent View. I will really appreciate either an advice or a useful link/info/doc to read in what concern in this kind of designs. What I do not like is that It looks like imperative programming filling the Activity with "global" variables.

Android :: APN Design - Access Pointer - MMS

May 13, 2009

in Android code, It is a very strange concept to define the APN type (APN_TYPE_MMS). The reason are: 1) APN only is an access pointer, it haven't any special attribute for MMS or other things. 2) Only Application care the APN name, since different APN will provide different service from operator. for example, operation may provide Email/MMS/GPS/.... service on different APN. 3) Android only define one type APN_TYPE_MMS, this will limit other top application usage. Any one can answer me why Android design this way? If google have strong reason for such design, I hope add other user defined type like APN_TYPE_USER1 APN_TYPE_USER2 then top application can set his property to use its APN other than APN_TYPE_MMS

Android :: How To Design A Floating Keyboard

Oct 13, 2010

I am a developer and recently completed the implementation of my keyboard MessagEase. It's available on the Market (with its very- different features, making it quite unlike QWERTY).

This keyboard works fine as a replacement of the standard keyboard on an Android Phone. But for a An Android Tablet, it would work best if it's implemented as a floating, movable keyboard.

(the footprint of this keyboard is mostly dependable on the size of a human's finger; it remains the same even if the tablet's display is much larger than a phone's. Therefore it'll take a relatively smaller area on a tablet.)

If I use the current SDK hooks, it will have to take a significant portion of the screen, defeating the purpose.
