I've been teaching myself Java over the last few weeks. I already know several OOP languages, so i was not too complicated. I have just learned some basic Swing and I now want to develop a simple app. How do I use Android-style Swing and custom graphics to do this?

I installed ECLIPSE,android SDK, NDK, ADT. I created an android application. I converted android application into c/c++ application. I set ndk-build as build command, but i am getting ndk-build path not found. I already set the path in the environment variable before build the project.
I find there was many discussions about the Style Guide when Android was still in Beta and RC. Now Android 1.0 has been released. The new release cupcake also went out. I am curious about whether Google has a plan to release a Style Guide for Android app development.

Is this a good place for Android related discussions?I seem to be missing a rather large concept of Android development. The gist is I am struggling understanding how to tie an application together. I'm not sure how to explain it, so I thought I would do my best with an example from the Android ApiDemo... assuming you are familiar with it.
Inside the com.example.android.apis.view namespace of the ApiDemo, there is a class called Animation3.java.Animation3 inherits the activity class and there is some code inside to display animation.I can't find a reference to the class (Animation3) anywhere in the demo code (except for its definition obviously). The only mention I found is in the manifest xml file. So how the heck does this activity get started? Don't we need to create an instance of the class somewhere and fire off a method to start it? I don't understand how to generate the code that ultimately glues this class to the rest of the application.Additionally, what about other classes like views or viewgroups? How do I generate code outside the class that initiates/starts/uses/calls (insert proper term) the class.I would appreciate any code examples as well as any concept explanation or reference documents. So far I've read pages and pages on activities and views but I'm really struggling how to tie things together.

View 25 Replies View RelatedI am developing droid apps with eclipse (new to both) and have a basic Layout question. When using the layout tab (rather than the coding tab) in my main.xml, I am trying to create a home screen for when my app opens.
There is going to be the logo at the top center, then 3 simple buttons below, all centered. How do I go about formatting the Logo so it maintains a size relative to the person's screen size, and stays in the center?
I don't want to write sloppy code to where my program looks fine (UI wise) on my screen and is poorly formatted on other's screens. Also, is there good documentation explaining all of the Property values in the layout view?
what I need to do is auto-register device if not already done and then start polling messages with the credentials I received through this registration. Now, after I read quite a bit about services, threads, asynctasks and the AlarmManager I'm totally confused about how to handle this. :-s So, there are my two main tasks. What would you recommend as a not-too-silly approach
1.) Registration
I'm currently spawning a service from my UI thread if there are no credentials saved in the DB. Inside this service I start an asynctask that POSTs my request to the server and receives the credentials for the new device. stopSelf ends the service.....................
I recently installed a custom ROM in my phone.
What I noticed is that the problem is either that my phone drivers can't be installed for some reason (I have a SGS being treated as a Google Nexus S), or I just can't implement applications.I mean that when I try to build an application on Eclipse, my phone is not recognized, like I don't have it plugged in.
I've download it OK (I think). I go to complete and then it says there is a "parse error". It then says that registration failed.
I've uninstalled it and installed it again, still the same. Any ideas whats wrong?
Before i contact dataviz, I wanna make sure that maybe someone has done this. I just did a hard reset on my hero because my sense UI kept crashing, so i figured, "maybe if i hard reset, it'll stop the crashes." But before i reseted, i wanted to make sure if i could redownload doc to go before anything else, since this was my only paid app on the phone. I did the hard reset, and for the past hour, I've been trying to retrieve it back. I even purchased a maintenance package that i has the ability to redownload the app up to 10 times in the year. i tried that and it still asked me to register as a new user. Is there anyway i can put my registration ID on the phone? ugh this is really getting to me and i use this app the most for editing a lot on word.

IMO looking at source code of good projects helps learn the system better, faster and not to mention reduces development time. Is there a recommended list of such projects or if not, can we build such a list? I think it will really be useful to other developers.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI keep trying to get my device registered with DivX so I can play DivX movies, but i'm having no luck. I go through the registration process and transfer the registration movie to my Ally and play it with no problems. But after that, I can't transfer and play any of the DivX movies I've bought on my Ally. And even if I go back and try to replay the registration movie again, it tells me my device is not registered and can't play the movie.Now this is no big deal because I doubt I will ever really watch a movie on my Ally except maybe on a business trip, but I was just curious if anyone has had any luck getting their device registered and/or playing a DivX movie on their Ally? I'd just like to get it setup in case I ever needed it if I could.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm a SGS2 owner on T-Mobile and a university student. Yesterday morning my phone anomylously deregistered itself from my network, displaying the error message "Not registered on network" whenever I attmpted to make a call.
I phoned Samsung and T-Mobile and resolved the issue by a 'Network Refresh' and manually registering the phone to T-Mobile. I registered manually and had the phone working hours before I got the text from my NSP telling me that I had recieved a network refresh. About which time I noticed that my 3G was not connecting, and has yet to establish a connection today.
Can I use any Android Phone for app development? Here in the Philippines, there are many available mobile phones with Android installed. But I want to buy the cheapest phone available (which I think is Samsung i5500 Galaxy 5).

It is boring sometimes for example, when I want to add color pink, I had to find some tool to show me what the exact RGB value for it and then fill it in that xml file. 1-restart or enable Flight mode then disable
2-replacing the two Sims cards with another from another network
3-trying to register manually and failed to register
4-replacing the software with another
I did all these steps separately or together.
I've studied several Android books in 2009 and have fiddled with SDK 1.0 with a couple of test projects; then I moved to another side project with different technologies and I have not followed the updates of the SDK in term of cool new features. Do you mind to give a brief recap of what I've missed since SDK 1.0?

But with android there are different phones, different sizes, So How can i possibly know that my app works, and looks fine on all these devices
2- I don't already own an android but i completed my first application using the simulator. Which android phone do u suggest for testing? I am an AT&T user and i use an iphone. Can i simply insert my sim-card in the new android to be able to test my app on the device?

Taken alone the 'Android SDK Content Loader' takes nearly two minutes on a dual-core machine with 2GB memory.
As the title suggest the reason for creating this wiki is for everyone to list their development hardware configurations, and thus determine what is a well-suited machine for Android development.
The secondary reason for the wiki is that I'm trying to get my employer to provide me with a decent machine for development as I'm currently forced to work on a nearly 4 year old randomly-built machine, and expected to deliver great results. However, the reality is that my system keeps running out of memory, and I can hardly get a chance to write a few lines of code in between the numerous crashes.
Is Ubunto 9.04 compatible with development in Android? Before i ugrade, deploy on device was normal. Now, using 9.04, doesn't recognize it using "adb devices". This below is already set on my ubuntu: 1. Login as root and create this file: /etc/udev/rules.d/50- android. rules.
