Development :: Android - What Actually Missed Since SDK 1.0?
Nov 15, 2010
I've studied several Android books in 2009 and have fiddled with SDK 1.0 with a couple of test projects; then I moved to another side project with different technologies and I have not followed the updates of the SDK in term of cool new features. Do you mind to give a brief recap of what I've missed since SDK 1.0?

Missed Call - LED notification for missed calls. Thanks to Android_Goes for his efforts however I (or at least my wife) wants thye same facility as she had on her previous phone which is a regular beep to remind her of a miss SMS or call. The flashing light is not so useful in a handbag or pocket. She travels on her job and regularly appointments are cancelled by SMS or by a call. She doesn't have nor wants hands free so she sometimes misses the calls. Is anyone able to point me at an app which beeps after a missed SMS and call?

Why G1 can't display the missed called name, even I have that name in my Contact list. It awful to memorize the number and look back who called me. Another issue is what is the sent time? It don't correspond any thing! I got a missed call at 6PM and saw the sent time is something different? What is this means?
Is there any way to solve this issues. Or any application that I can download and use.

I have written a little application that gives LED notification for missed calls. (the default behaviour gives you only LED notifications for SMS, email and voicemail).
Features:
Customizable sound, vibration, led, repeat notifications for missed calls, incoming calls, sms, bluetooth enabled/disabled, bluetooth device connected, airplane mode, battery level low, etc. Version 0.8.9 includes a Locale plug-in! For all the Droid users make sure that you have got "Missed Call for Android 2.0" installed. You can try it out if you want.

I am looking for a missed call alert program that will work on my stock HTC Evo with 2.2. Searching comes up with a few different programs but many reviews say they broke after the 2.2 update or are buggy. Are any of you using any of these apps or others on your stock HTC EVO? Do you find them buggy?

I'm beginning with Android development. I'm aware that there is a lot of Android devices still on OS 1.5 or 1.6 so I'm thinking about require API level 3 as minimum to support them. What will I miss from 2.2? Which are the most important features I will miss targeting Android API 3 (OS 1.5) instead of most recent API?

I want recurring sound notifications when I miss calls or texts because the LED alone isn't enough. I got Missed Reminder which does what I need but it's keeping my Sprint Hero awake (80-90% up time when running, 10-20% when not). Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way I can prevent this or is there another app I can use?

Ive got a Samsung Galaxy S. I wanted an app which shows an sms as a popup so i downloaded SMS Popup and I have disabled the reminder as I also wanted a reminder for missed calls, so I downloaded Missed Reminder. I have setup reminder for both calls and sms. However I have noticed a few problems. After I receive an SMS if I click 'Close' or 'Reply' in the SMS Popup window, the notification of the sms in the notification bar closes, however I still get reminders from the Missed Reminder. This is also the case with missed calls. If i slide down the notification bar and click 'Clear', I still get reminders (vibration and beep) of the missed call. Does anyone else notice this with this combination of apps?

I have a square which I'm rendering using four vertices's and GL_LINE_LOOP. It works fine.
However, if I start to rotate this square on all axes and part of the square leaves the emulator screen, the loop appears to drop the vertex that has left the screen. I then get a triangle for a while until the fourth vertex returns to the screen and the loop draws the square again.
I'm extremely new to OpenGL. Is this expected behavior, a bug in the Android emulator, or something I've missed?

Is there an app that will send a text to the caller if you miss their call? For example, I am expecting a call from my wife but am in the shower when she calls. I need something to send her(only her) a text if I miss her call. Other calls missed can go to voicemail.

Can anyone recommend a widget that shows the number of missed calls / text messages / emails? I would prefer something that is text only.If not, does anyone know a widget that can display text from a file on the SD card? I could probably figure out how to use Tasker to generate the text file if needed.

Whenever I have someone call my Google Voice number, it rings for a split second, then goes immediately to a missed call icon on my droid. It will then ring for another split second, and add yet another missed call. Every call coming to my number gets around 5 missed calls. The call from their end seems normal, as all they hear is ringing. On my end, I cant even answer the call because it vanishes right away.

I am looking for a simple app to remind me if I have a missed call with a notification sound configured to my preferences. In other works remind me ever X min with sound Y.
I have read a lot of issues with Missed Call so I haven't even tried that one. Anyone having any luck with this app?
I installed executive assistant which does the job very nicely but it also does a LOT more that I don't need/like. I just want something light weight and simple.

I'd like to know which one actually works for Motorola's Droid. I think it should've come standard with the phone, but it didn't. I really need a working app; the two I've installed (Missed Reminder and Missed Call) don't seem to work just as they're supposed to.

With the latest SDK release, and the ability to download separate platforms releases into the SDK, the hardware resources required to develop for Android have increased significantly. Assuming that the developer targets all currently available seven platforms - that could take your dev machine to its knees. Taken alone the 'Android SDK Content Loader' takes nearly two minutes on a dual-core machine with 2GB memory.
As the title suggest the reason for creating this wiki is for everyone to list their development hardware configurations, and thus determine what is a well-suited machine for Android development.
The secondary reason for the wiki is that I'm trying to get my employer to provide me with a decent machine for development as I'm currently forced to work on a nearly 4 year old randomly-built machine, and expected to deliver great results. However, the reality is that my system keeps running out of memory, and I can hardly get a chance to write a few lines of code in between the numerous crashes.

Is Ubunto 9.04 compatible with development in Android? Before i ugrade, deploy on device was normal. Now, using 9.04, doesn't recognize it using "adb devices". This below is already set on my ubuntu: 1. Login as root and create this file: /etc/udev/rules.d/50- android. rules.
For Gusty/Hardy, edit the file to read: SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666"
For Dapper, edit the file to read: SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666" 2. Now execute: chmod a+rx /etc/udev/rules.d/50-android.rules

I've just started with android development and updating the UI is really bugging me :/
This is what I've got working so far -
CODE:...........
It works fine but everybody says that doing your graphics in the main thread, so I'm trying (and failing) to pass it off to another thread. Trouble is, I have absolutely no idea how since really I've never used Threads.
The examples that Google gives on using Threads doesn't seem to be very clear and I couldn't really follow it for what I want to do. Could I ask somebody out here to give me the most basic example of how I could do what I'm doing here efficiently using Threads?

I'm just about done with development and emulator testing and I'm unclear how to proceed with getting my application ready for actual device testing and them publishing.
Here's my main concern: I have around 600 images that I will need to have loaded (on initial installation) onto an sd card. What is the best way to do this? HTTP? Is there an automated process? Is this handled by an installation script.
Are there documents that cover this type of scenario?
When it comes time for actual publishing the application, again, how will I handle loading the images onto the sd card during the initial installation?
