I am starting with ListActivity.
I saw apidemos and saw that it is based on ListActivity. My doubt is, in my first screen I need a few labels and texts under that a list. How to approach this ? I cant do a setContentlayut(R.id.main) if my activity extends ListActivity, no ?
more over I found the tutorial posted in the forums for ListActivity a bit outdated. Where is 1.5 / 1.6 based tutorials ? because I am new, it is taking too much time to correct 1.1 codes.
lastly, if i have a todo type appfor adding deleting and deleting, should i use 3 different layouts or activities ?
I think we really need a file manager for the g1 so that we have a single app to access all the file on the internal or sd memory instead of going to each appropriate program for the files wanting access to.Secondly, what are the requirement for files on the sd card? Do they all have to be jumbled together in the root directory or can the be organized into folders and still be found by the programs?

Today, got a pop up--mandatory update, voicemail to text crap.
After install,
1. Speakerphone on voicemail doesn't work.
2. Call back on voicemail doesn't work.
3. Get "Subscribe to Voicemail-to-Text" button.
Did these fools foul up my phone, or what? Solutions, other than gelignite at Sprint HQ ?
I'm running Fresh 2.4.0 and I've run out of space on my internal memory (not that many apps, but still less than 20mg free). I'm looking to use App2SD, but the link off the Fresh 2.4.0 XDA site for App2SD FAQ's (FAQ: Apps2sd Information) suggest that I use a Class 6 micro SD card. However, the Sprint HTC Hero website says the phone can only use Class 2 settings.Is there any advantage to spending the extra money and buy a Class 6 card? Is it really necessary to run App2SD? Any insight would be helpful!

The phone is rooted, and I assume that this is what is causing the failure. So my questions are, what happens if I do not download the update, and what can I do to stop recieving the message? it seems to pop up everytime I recieve a text.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis has probably been brought up a lot and beaten to death, but I felt compelled to make my own thread about this. I can't believe how much a factory reset helped me after installing Froyo.
I finally got around to doing it this past weekend and one word....WOW! Not only did it fix a ton of little bugs that I noticed, but it literally doubled (or more) my battery life.
I have the 2150 battery, but now I'm not sure I even need it anymore. I unplug my phone every morning during the week at about 8:00 am. After installing Froyo I was down in the 25-35% range by 3:00-4:00 pm every day. Causing me to recharge while I was at work just to make it through the night after work.
Since I did the factory reset I have been getting stellar (by the Incredible's standards) battery life. Yesterday I went to bed at 11:30 pm and I still had about 50% battery life left. Granted I didn't do a ton of stuff on my phone yesterday, but I still used it moderately.
As I'm typing this right now, it's almost 7:00 pm and I am at 51% battery life. But I did a lot more with my phone today.
Anyhow, I think a factory reset should be mandatory on this phone after installing Froyo! If anyone is on the fence, I HIGHLY recommend spending the time and doing it. It's well, well worth it.
So I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 (Sprint) running 4.1.1 on CyanogenMod, However this question pertains to multiple handsets across all of the carriers.If you've ever tried to set up a VPN or other secure WiFi connection (802.1x) you'll notice that android then makes you secure your lock screen either via a PIN or a pattern lock.
is there a way to disable this requirement while maintaining the connection configuration? I have root and terminal access.

well at 4:16 pm EST 11-27 I got this message that tells me there is a "mandatory update"
I dont want to do it simply because it says "mandatory" where do they get off telling me that some update is mandatory and not even supply a change log or anything telling me what it is
I need to know what this is before I update in case it makes something suck or breaks something - this is why I hacked my Palm Pre because the webos updates screwed up something and I had to root it and edit some file to prevent the updates from happening, Palm didnt give you an choice, after a couple of times it would apply it anyways even if you didnt want it, I dont want this to happen here so do I have to root my epic just to prevent things like this?

Ok just got this "mandatory" voicemail notification from sprint.. My phone is NOT rooted, Nor does hit have the Android Update 2.1 that came out in May.. I hit download and it does it but when it goes to install it says 'error installing' and button for Retry... I've tried doing this several times.. Couple of questions .. Do I have to do this ? If I do do this will Sprint be charging me to use this ? Finally WHY am i getting this error? My phone has been fine since earlier in the year since I got it ..

1) Is there a way to override the password requirement for Native Exchange? I'd prefer to not have to enter a p/w every time my phone locks.
2)Is anyone else having issues with Touchdown not rendering their messages properly? Mine are cut off even with the smallest font setting and I cannot side scroll to see the rest of the message. Also as I scroll down into the threaded messages the screen above goes white.
I lose phones... habitually. Sometimes they find their way back to me and sometimes they don't, It is unsettling to me that even if I have a security app installed, or a GPS tracker that ability to perform a google search can simply factory wipe my phone and make it their own.
So the question: Is it possible to include a password requirement to access the bootloader or recovery? I realize that if you forget your password there would likely be no way to save your phone in the event you need to, but I don't forget my passwords so this does not affect me.
I am doing R&D on an idea for example I have an application "abc" which send sms through my own way . I want to do work like this: When user send sms from Android Default Messaging Application My app Intercept that sms and stop it to send and take user decision to send sms via operator or my app. (As you have seen many apps those intercepts outgoing calls and abortBroadcast(); and take user decision to call via GSM or via their apps.) So if you want to have as little problems as possible read first, then do stuff.Not so long time ago, iGo released their navigation for Android phones. It is a traditional navigation, in which you don't need data connection for downloading maps - they are already on your microSD card This is 10 times better than Google Navigation. I had tested the google nav yesterday on my way back home - the voice commands about an upcoming turn are said once you have passed that turn.. This means you have to be constantly looking on your phone. And with iGo it's a totally different story. It works just like a proper navigation (like TomTom, Garmin, etc.).So lets begin with the step-by-step manual of how to become a happy user of iGO navigation on your Android phone (this works also for other phones, not just HTC Legend).
1) Download the latest version of iGO for Android to your PC - http://www.fileserve.com/file/dpbJy95
2) How to install the app - from Android Market download "Apps Installer". Connect phone to your PC in "Disk Drive" mode and then unzip the iGOMyWay_8.4.2.139242_JMX.zip file into your phone memory card. Dont put it any different folder, keep it in the main directory. Disconnect phone from PC. On your phone, go to Settings->Applications->Put a tick on the "Unknown sources". This will allow to install apps that are not from andoird market. Open Apps Installer and then instal the iGO app.
3) If you need maps for your location - just look in some torrent sites for 'igo maps'. For example try Pirate Bay - The Pirate Bay - The world's most resilient bittorrent site . It is important that you download the R3 version of maps and not R1, as the R1 are for older iGo software versions.
3.1) Once you have maps downloaded to your pc, once again connect your phone to pc and copy maps .fbl files to igocontentmaps and the .poi files to igocontentpoi.
3.2) From my personal experience, you can run maps on iGO from 3 companies - TeleAtlas, TopMap, Navteq. The coverage of each map provider is different depending on country. There is no "the best map company with 100% coverage everywhere". If you need maps for multiple countries, please check the coverage of each provider and choose the one that fits your needs the best. I personally used all these providers for different countries (Lithuania/Latvia/Estonia) and at first all looked good.... But today some maps just dont seam to work. Have sent a email to iGO support team. Will keep u up to date with this issue.
4) If you need speedcamera warnings - check them here - POIplaza - Free Points of Interests (POI) for iGO, Garmin, Sygic, TomTom and other popular navigation systems. Its the best place to find ANY kind of POI in your region.
4.1)Quick manual how to get speedcam warnings running - connect phone to PC. Copy the speedcam.txt file into igocontentspeedcam There should already be 1 file 'speedcamupdates.spud'. In some manuals it says that you have to delete it, in others - that you don't. I left the update file and everything just works fine. When you have the speedcam.txt file in your phone, disconnect it from PC, turn on iGO, then Settings-> Sound and Warnings-> Tick the 'Speedcams'. Your GPS has to be turned on (and have a fixed signal at least to a few satelites) so that you could see the speedcam option in settings.
5) The previous versions of iGO are out-dated and had a few bugs. I personally could not run TeleAtlas and TopMap maps on my device. But when upgradings to the latest version (v8.4.2.139242) all looks good so far.
6.1) For those, who have a small screen phone. anonym.to - free dereferer service This data.gro file should make iGO work on phones with 240x320 and 320x240 screens. Didn't test it. You use it at your own risk!!!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to learn how to do stuff in Android, and I'm not sure of the best way to build the interface.I've been working on porting an iPhone app, which uses navigation controllers and table views for looking at the different sections: basically, someone touches a cell in the table, which drills down to another table. when they touch a cell on that table it drills down to a webview that displays the information.I want to do something similar for the android app, but I don't know how, or if there is a better way native to Android. I've figured out how to use the webview to my purposes, but moving forward and backward in the table tree is unclear.

I've found on the net it can be done with this intent : Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse("geo:"+lat +","+lng)); where lat and lng are the latitude and longitude. I like no-map Garmin GPS handy navigators, so I created software, that has most functions of such navigator. TripComputer records tracks of your trips and stores your interesting waypoints. You can view them on map view, see stats like distances, speed, time, altitute graph, bearing, azimuth, and many more. Also, if you have internet connection, you can send your selected waypoints and find waypoints sent by others,to use in you own trips.
At this time, TripComputer does not use maps - because in off-road areas, maps are useless. However, topo maps will be supported in future versions. Also, I'm working on GPX files and some geocaching support.
