Android :: In-App Purchasing And Market Agreement
Mar 17, 2010
I have still not seen an acceptable solution for in-app purchasing, and I was hoping for an official response from Google. This has been discussed in other threads, but there is still no good solution. http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa.Collecting a fee to unlock functionality or to buy virtual items is not a technical problem. It is straightforward. However, the Market Agreement severely limits developers' ability to collect such a fee. It says all fees collected for the app must go through the Market payment processor.Buying another app from the Market seems the only clearly acceptable solution. But that is not ideal. It perverts the definition of an "app" and causes problems because of the refund policy.Google, how are developers supposed to handle this situation? Or is your intention that we simply not do this?
While lawyers may quarrel over the actual document, what is your intent as it pertains to buying virtual items? For example, charging $1 real money for 10 in-game gold? What if only the front end of the game is distributed on the market, and the features of the front end (the app) do not change with additional fees? This may be splitting hairs but that's what happens with legal documents, I suppose. So what is the intention of the Market Agreement here? Did you intend to prevent buying virtual items or not?

An interesting addendum to the Gameloft debate.I bought Asphalt 5 when if came out on the Market in April. It's now been pulled (presumably connected to Gameloft going to direct distribution). One think I notice is that when I pull up my list of Downloads in the Market application it no longer shows up. Presumably this means I won't be receiving updates on it.But presumably this also means I cannot reinstall it if I clear some memory / bork my phone / have a horrible experience with the Gingerbread update &tc &tc.Are they allowed to do this? Isn't one of the reasons I buy on the Market because I know I have the right to reinstall? Let's look at the marketplace agreement which (presumably) Gameloft signed up to: Android.com.Take a close look at clauses 3.6 and 7.1.
1) I have the right to unlimited reinstalls (3.6).
2) Even if an app is taken down by the vendor, my licence rights are unaffect (7.1).
3) There are special cases where an app can be taken down and reinstall rights suspended (if it infringes copyright, is defamatory etc). However if taken down under these circumstances I am entitled to a refund (7.1).
So as I see it taking down Asphalt 5 and denying me my right to unlimited installs contravenes the Marketplace agreement (does anyone else have experience with other paid apps that have been taken down?). And even if the app was taken down because it was dodgy (which I don't think it has done), I should be entitled to a full refund.I've lobbed a request into Gameloft support to see what they come out with, but I don't hold up much hope.

I'm sorry I know this is slightly off-topic, but since there is no group about the market... When I'm logging in to the Market console, I'm asked to agree with the "updated Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement".Is there any info/announcement anywhere highlighting and explaining the differences with the previous agreement?

This is not a programming question per se but a question that may be relevant to all future Android developers.I am in the market for an Android developer phone. I can buy it used on eBay, or I can buy it new on the Android Market. All nice and dandy but in order what the Android market has to offer, I have to first register, which requires signing the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement.Well, I know that many developers signed that agreement and stayed alive, but before signing anything I prefer to read what I am about to sign. Unfortunately, certain information that is needed to be understood in order to sign the agreement can be accessed only after you sign the agreement. For example, how do I know which are the "authorized payment processors" mentioned in clause 1.2?Also, it sounds strange to me that in order to just see what developer phones are available (and their specs) I first have to register and pay the $25 registration fee. It will take at least 6 months before I will be ready to place anything on the Android market, so why should I register now?

I downloaded launcherpro, and there is no application icon with the rest of my apps. I wanted to fix my screens and stuff, but I cannot find the preferences for the app. I cant even find the app on my phone. It changed my home screens from 7 to 3. Is there only a way to get to the preferences by purchasing LauncherProPlus?

In the agreement of the Dolphin Browser HD, it states that Dolphin will collect data about the user in something called user experience analytics.I've been trying to find information about this, to no avail. I've searched everywhere.Has anyone read this agreement? Can anyone give me information about what they collect? It seems very open statement, in which they could practically take anything.

I was wondering if anybody had legitimate reasons for why I shouldn't get my EVO through Wirefly? The ONLY downside I can think of right now, is I may have to wait till June 5th or 7th to actually receive the phone. But the positives seem to outweigh that little issue. I've seen all the threads related to Best Buy and Radio Shack and I'm trying to figure out what the draw is for purchasing there other than getting it as fast as you can. This is all based on what I have seen Wirefly do, recently with the Incredible release, as well as purchasing my last phone (ENV2) through them, but this is how I foresee it going down:
-EVO becomes available on June 4th, same as Incredible became available on April 29th.
-EVO is priced at $149, just as the Incredible was and is currently listed at $149. Both phones would be or are $199 on their respective carriers websites and at places like Radio Shack and Best Buy.
-Would be able to drop another $50 off price because of Bing Cashback program, effectively dropping the total purchase price to $99, without having to pay any sales tax. Still would have to pay $35 activation fee, unless Sprint was running a special through Wirefly giving free activation. (Much like AT&T is currently doing) But maximum cost of phone would be $135.
-EVO would ship overnight and best case scenario would arrive on Saturday June 5th, or worst case scenario Monday June 7th.
-No rebates mail in or otherwise to worry about or mess with. Just a lower cost for the phone overall.
Does anybody have any LEGITIMATE reasons other than not getting the phone on the day it is released why it wouldn't be a good idea to go with Wirefly on this?I'm not looking for arguments or pissing matches on this, just really curious if anyone has any reasons for me to think about not going with Wirefly on this, if the previously mentioned aspects turn out that way.

I have an app that was installed via Android Market. And so, the Android Market knows when new versions are out and notifies me of an update. Titanium Backup calls this the 'Market Link', not sure what else it could be called.
how would I go about 'disconnecting' the app from the Market? Deleting the market link as if it were side-loaded?
Yes, I know this means no more updates for the app etc. Which is actually what I'm after.
I'm using a SGS - DocRom V9.6 with Speedmod Kernel k13a

I have the following clear message :
Market requires the minSdkVersion to be set in AndroidManifest.xml.
But my manifest has the line : <uses-sdk minSdkVersion="2" /> and I also tried even <uses-sdk minsdkversion="2" />... I try to put this line : as the first child of manifest, as the last child and also right after application.. Is there a hidden rule I don't know ...

I am developping (for my company) an app included on a project that will have 2 versions:
- 1st simple version to download using a OTA server, clients accesss to an URL to download.
- 2nd version more complex to be published on the Market.
The question here is that the process to publish on the Android Market is under bureaucratic internal process and it takes a long time, so the idea do reduce the time to market is to provide an OTA version.
There is any possibility for users that download application via OTA to upgrade the application for version published later on the Market? (Both Application will be signed with the same key).

I know my question answers but since there's a lot of you who really spend your time scrutinizing your rank, downloads and all, I'm trying it maybe someone came up with empiric science on this one :
Does anyone understood even bits of how the market ranks apps in the market ?
I usually don't look at stats but following another post on this topic, I counted my rank in my category ... 565 ... Ouch that hurts! Especially when half the apps in front of mine, are crap apps with less downloads and ratings as low as 1 star :).
Not that it would make a difference being rank 250 instead of 565...But this is humiliating a little :s
Since my app has been on the market for one month, i'm wondering if age matters ...
I know I should have asked in the market "black hole of hell " google group but the name says it all. And I'm sure some of you already figured out some of the black magic used by the Market to rank apps.

I've just noticed that the Android Market shows a blank page with the message 'No matching content in Android Market'. Yet when I go to specific sections of the Market or do a search, one is able to download and install applications and games just fine. I've only just noticed this happening in the last few days. I'm using an unlocked UK version Galaxy S but my location is Inner Mongolia, China. Would this have anything to do with Android Market not showing content on the front page? The S itself is loaded with Froyo, as downloaded from the XDA forums.

I had an edited png for the market icon in the vending apk but when I applied my edited png's to Ivans rom with the market fix it seems to have changed the icon back to the original market Icon. When I first loaded the rom it showed my edited png for the market icon but after my first reboot it seems to change the icon back to the original. I assume that the market is updating upon reboot so I pulled the vending apk off my phone and my edited png's are still there but its still showing the original market icon. Anybody else with an edited market icon notice this or any ideas of why its going back to original? I have tried this a couple times and it always updates after first reboot...

I uploaded an upgrade to my application and opened it again to see if everything is correct or not. I was surprised to see 8 screen shots instead of 2. I deleted 6 images and save it. but when ever I reopen I see 8 images. When I tried to download updated version of my app on my device thorough Android Market, it kept crashing. Did any one else faced same problem? version of the last upgrade is 4.

I've been rooted with Droid Mod forever and have never had any issues or never tried other roms it worked so I've stayed with it. Anyway I was screwing around trying to fix a problem and did a nandroid back up and and restore ( i'm clueless) Did not wipe info (that scares me) and I reflashed the rom a couple times because I kept selecting or deselecting the wrong things. Finally got everything perfect. The phone seemed to like the mini overhaul. But when I rebooted the market apk is gone. No where to be found. All my apps are there but no icon for market. Its just gone. Can I get that, download it desktop, mount, and drag to phone somewhere?

I am creating an application that checks the installation of a package and then launches the market-place with its id.
When I try to launch market place with id of an application say com.mybrowser.android by throwing an intent android.intent.action.VIEW with url: market://details?id=com.mybrowser.android, the market place application does launches but crashes after launch.
Note: the application com.mybrowser.android doesn't exists in the market-place.
MyApplication is my application.
CODE:..........
However, when I try to launch the market place for a package that exists in the market place say com.opera.mini.android, everything works. Log for this case:

I uploaded a new release of my app.
I downloaded the new version from the Market to try it out and I got the new binary, it also state V1.3.0, which is the new version. The description is from the release before that.
Very strange. When looking at http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.newsrob I see the old version V1.2.1 and the old description.
When looking at a G1 where the old version is installed it doesn't provide me with the option to upgrade it.
I followed the same steps as the weeks before. The Market has changed and I could use new options (DRM, not paid as I am not from the US/UK), but I kept the old options.
Meanwhile the old description is also in the developer's console (which I will change again right away), but it says 1.3.0 and when re-uploading the apk it says "The new apk's versionCode (130) in AndroidManifest.xml must be higher than the old apk's versionCode (130).", which is fine, well kind of.
