Android :: IDE Rather Than Eclipse That Really Works With Droid SDK?
Oct 18, 2010
I want to start Android development but I just don't like Eclipse. (Yes, I am picky. lol)
Is there any other good IDE rather than Eclipse that really WORKS with Android SDK? (QT maybe?)

When I run my application on a physical phone from within Eclipse, my Google MapView works perfectly. If export the app to an apk file and install it to the same phone from the command line with adb then the MapView comes up but shows only the Google logo and grid - no map tiles appear. I'm using a debug application key and a GMaps API key generated with that debug key. I've verified that this happens on both the Droid and N1 phones. The logcat looks identical in both the working and non-working cases - no obvious error messages.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I am running BBv1.0 @ 1100Mhz (LV) with Fabolous' NexBeast and I would never have accomplished that were it not for the help I received in these forums. I am hoping that someone out there is an expert with all things Exchange and Outlook; I was able to add a new account in the stock email.apk which is tied in to the exchange server at work and have no problem sending/receiving mail. I followed instructions designed to add the exchange account on an iPhone but I'm having trouble porting the information into Outlook. My email address is different from my user name (i.e. user name is user1 but my email is firstname.lastname@company.com). On my phone I have Dominance, password and server but don't know where to put all of that into Outlook. Without revealing my company's name, domain, etc I have tried the following in Outlook: server_name domain under server and my user name for the mailbox: server_name under server and dominance for mailbox: server_name domain under server and first name.last name for mailbox.

I'm having a problem where my app crashes on the Droid and seems to work fine on the G1. We have a G1 dev phone but do not have access to a Droid phone, so the issue is difficult to debug at this stage.
The app loads up the main screen okay, but once the user moves beyond the main screen, the app crashes. Moving beyond main screen initiates the following:
- GPS signal acquired - Accelerometer sensor listener active - Geomagnetic sensor listener active - Camera preview active
I have a suspicion that the issue may be related to the camera preview. With the G1, it didn't seem to matter how I set the camera preview size, so I just made it fit the size of the view.
Camera.Parameters parameters = mCamera.getParameters(); parameters.setPreviewSize(w, h); //where w, h are the width and height.
One possibility is that with the Droid having a larger screen resolution to the G1, it may be setting the preview size to something that is not supported. I plan on addressing this, but I have a few questions that I was hoping someone could shed some light on.
1. If the app attempts to set a preview size that is not supported, will it just be ignored or will the app crash?
2. If the preview size is smaller than the surface that is holding the preview, will the image be stretched to fill the surface?
3. Can anyone think of anything else that may be related specifically to the Droid that could be causing me problems?

I'm writing an application that will ship in two versions: Android and PC version.
Is there a simple way to access files from the shared code?
Using Java.io is simple, but I don't know how to access android resources or assets using it. And I can't write methods that operate on FileInputStreams instead, because some files contain references to another ones, so I need a way to access them from the method code. Any suggestions?

I don't know how the whole app thing works.I hit market d/l play and delete if I don't like it. When I do this with windows a little bit of each program remains on my computer. Does the same thing happen with apps on my phone? Do I need to reformat my phone every now and then to clean it up like I do my computers?

I'd like to develop for Android but I don't really like using an IDE for programming as I find them to be pretty cumbersome compared to a text editor and command console. Is there any way I can develop for Android without doing so in Eclipse, and instead using Gedit? The system requirements specified on the Android developers site list Eclipse as a requirement, but I Ewas wondering if anyone had found a way to manually tap into the SDK libraries outside of Eclipse. I'm using a Linux setup as my development box.

My emails are showing up in the gmail app at sporadic intervals; sometimes they show up immediately while other times I only receive the email if I refresh within the app itself. I noticed this after I manually did the update last Friday on my Eris. Emails are showing up rather quickly on 3G, but hardly at all on wifi. I'm testing this by sending myself emails to the gmail account from a non-gmail account on the laptop. I saw over in the Moto Droid forum that some users there are experiencing gmail push slowness/problems.

I've many times debugged my Java EE code running on Tomcat and JBoss quite effectivley with Eclipse, but I'm running into a brick wall debugging an Android app on the Droid. I think I have to debug on the device and not the AVM because the app interacts with MapView, GPS, etc. Maybe I need to use the AVM to effectively debug? What happens is I get NullPointerException or ArrayOutOfBoundsException in the main thread at something like ViewRoot.draw(boolean) line: 1373. Of course, by default, the source won't be found. So I downloaded the source with Git and pointed Eclipse at it. However, I think I don't have the right source, because the line is that the exception appears to have been thrown from is not completely relevant. How can I be sure I'm using the correct source code for debugging the Droid? After writing this, I've found that although Eclipse is not displaying the little green dot when I set a breakpoint in the Andorid code, it does show up in the breakpoint view and I can step through the code. Not sure if this helps me. Is it perhaps my ignorance of Dalvik and/or debugging threaded code?

I am new to android and I currently got a droid so I could test out apps before publishing them to the market. My question is how to I get the app from Eclipse to the Droid and install it? Currently I open eclipse right click the project go to android tools and do export unsigned version. I then copy that file from my computer to the droid. I then open ASTRO to navigate to the file. When I click to install it says Application Not Installed. If any could help or link a good straight forward way to do this that would be great.

I have an ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 system. I installed the ia32 libraries and manually installed(i.e. untarred) Eclipse Galileo JEE. I then installed android's ADT-0.9.5 by downloading the zip file and pointing the software source as archive.
Now I need to add the android SDK in Windows->preferences->android. However, when I select the SDK directory there and select Apply/OK, nothing happens. The next time I open preferences, the directory is there in the selection dialog, but eclipse just won't load/do anything on clicking Apply.

My app uses an API from an external JAR file. This JAR file has been added into my project and added in the build path. My project builds and runs just fine, but now I need to update the JAR file (some code in those classes has changed). I created a new JAR and copied it into my project after removing the old one. Do I need to "re-import" the JAR file or is there some way for Eclipse to refresh/re-examine the JAR file Im removed and re-added ?

I know I'm on ver2. But is it the root? When I downloaded it there was also a recovery that I did not use. Did that screw me for root? Or am I just thinking wrong? Do we know if someone is working on rooting the leak versions? I know a lot of questions. My phone works really well on ver2 and I am afraid to go to ver3 and get the crap everyone else is dealing with, but root would be nice. Now that I have had the time to learn about it and how it works.
