View 1 Replies View RelatedYou get the number from Google voice and obviously you can make calls. Why can't you just cancel your voice and text plan and just keep your data package and use it like that? Will T-Mobile allow that?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI finally changed the voicemail system on my Hero from Sprint's "visual voicemail" (which is misleading because it doesn't transcribe voicemails) to Google Voice. It's nice to see my transcribed voicemails now. However, when I actually want to hear them (if the transcription didn't work well), it only comes through the external speaker; the speaker on the back of the phone. I went into Google Voice settings and under "Voicemail Playback" I tried the only two options: "Play via Handset" and "Play via Speaker." Unfortunately, both play through the speaker phone speaker. How do I change it to the phone speaker? I also can't adjust the volume, so the whole world hears my voicemails through the external speaker.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI changed the voice mail number from *86 (version default) to my Google voice number. This works when I am not answering the phone and I the caller gets connected to my GV account. But when my phone is not in coverage the caller gets my version voice mail. Appreciate if someone can correct my settings or suggest any app that does it. I am from Windows mobile world and missing those settings when you can define several settings for voice mail (unanswered, rejected, unavailable etc...)

Can someone post the steps to setting up Google Voice as visual voice mail for the Captivate? I know it's probably something very simple but I just can't figure it out ( yes, I'm a bit slow ).

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Cyanogenmod 6. I just noticed that I can't find Google voice or Google maps in the market. I do have the apps installed, but can't see them int he market to get updates. I tried out LFY1.7 and Ultimate Droid 1.0.0, and see the same issue.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have searched around for an answer to these two issues, but haven't been able to find anything. After doing the manual upgrade to 2.1 OTA, most everything is fine. However, Google Voice and Google Listen are having issues. Google Voice is giving me a Force Close message every time I receive a text message in Hand cent SMS (to my non-GV number). I don't actually use GV on my voice all that often. Google Listen seems to have lost all trace of any of my pod casts, including new ones that have come in since the update. Every episode on every pod cast has, just under the title: "Error (sd card/com.goggle.android.apps.listen/downloads/e55bee71)" The string of letters and numbers on each one is different. I used Astor File Manager to look in this folder and each of those files is not there. Some of these folders were downloaded a month ago (I'm a little slow in getting to some pod casts) and some I have listened to already pre update but still getting the error now. Some that I have listened to are not giving the error. And any that were downloaded after the update are giving the error.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWould it be possible to add a line of code to the Google Hangouts app on Android to receive forwarded Google Voice calls as it does on the iOS app?
There's been apps like Groove IP that are already able to provide this feature. I'd just like to have this functionality without having to install any 3rd party apps that always have to be running in the background. Google Hangouts is already the primary sms app for Android & so it is already able to receive texts, mms, along with video and voice chats. Thus, it should be somewhat possible to receive call forwarding from Google voice.
I am using Captivate on the AT&T network and looking into goggle voice. Since the main feature I am interested in (for now) is the visual voice mail, I was thinking of getting the option without the GV number and therefore, keeping my cell phone number. I have several questions:
1. Does this work well with the Captivate phone?
2. Is there any delay in getting the voice mails by going through GV?
3. Does this eat into my data plan at all? Currently, I am only on the 200 mb plan per month.
4. If I try to get text messages through GV, would that not use up my data plan and instead come through my Internet connection ( which could at times be free if I am in a WiFi zone)?
I was wondering if anyone has been using Google Talk exclusively for SMS and ditched their texting w Verizon all together. I mainly ask as I am curious how reliable it is as a replacement for SMS. I'd love to cut my phone bill by $20 a month. My friend (5-6 months ago) said he was having issues w Gtalk in regards to some msgs not sending, or he never actually received them to his phone. He had issues with his N1 on Tmobile. Is anyone still experiencing similar problems? My SMS MUST function and be completely reliable as I use it constantly to communicate with my managers.
View 10 Replies View RelatedIs there a better app that would allow me to send SMS messages through Google Voice than the default one? I have a number of issues with the Google provided app:
* It doesn't thread correctly. It will randomly create a new thread for messages with the same contact
* I can't send to multiple people simultaneously
* I'd like to see a popup when I get a text, even when the screen is locked
Are there other apps that let me do this through the Google Voice service?
Is there a different voice synthesiser that can be used for google maps navigation? To start with her mispronunciations and bizarre inflections were a source of amusement but now it is doing everyone's head in. I think I'd rather have Stephen Hawking than this deranged ladybot.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got a Google Voice number and had a few questions to ask the experts among you:
1. I understand that it's possible to make free phone calls (meaning, I don't use my anytime minutes) from my Android cell phone using Google Voice and a wifi connection. I also believe that it's necessary to download an app in order to do this (for example, GV Dialer, GV Mobile, GV Callback, etc). Is it necessary to download one of these apps to make free phone calls, or am I mistaken and I can just do this using the Google Voice app? If it's necessary, which app do you think is best? If it's not necessary, what's the advantage of downloading these apps?
2. What's the difference between making free phone calls using wifi and Google Voice versus using, say, Fring or any similar apps out there (other than the additional functionalities of Google Voice, such as call forwarding, etc)? Are there advantages to one over the other?
3. This may sound like a naive question but does this technology (free phone calls using wifi) work while driving or must I remain in one location with a wifi connection?
4. I text and call overseas. Are there ways to text and/or call overseas for free using any of the above mentioned apps?
Just got G-Voice and at this point, all I want to do is use it for visual voicemail. During setup, it asked me if I wanted to use my carrier's service or Google's service. I chose Google at which point I had to call a provided number that seems to initiate forwarding?
Anyway, just wondering what would happen if I choose Verizon's service instead of Google? Do you still get visual voicemail?
How is it possible? do i have to get my own number rather than my cell number? thats how i set voice up, i didn't know much bout it, just new it was pretty sweet and did voice mail.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have a google voice number and i installed google voice on my droid with android 2.2 but it dosnt do what I want it to do.I want a dialer that is only used to make calls from my google voice number. I know you can setup google voice to:
-to make all calls from GV
-to make only international calls from GV
-make no calls from GV
-ask if you want to use GV (before every call)
I dont want any of these. I want my normal dialer to use my normal number and whenever I want to make a call from GV I want to click on an APP and have a dialer appear and any calls from that dialer are made with the GV number.my BB worked this way. I would click on GV and then start dialing and it made the call with GV.
How does the voicemail work the phone? It says i have to call this number to configure my phone but everytime i call it, the number never works. Also, why do i get a text back in my regular inbox when a person responds to my google voice text?

However, for my wife's phone, some calls use google voice and some calls don't.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Google Voice on my new Droid and love it. I am trying to use it for SMS but my problem/question is - how do I set it to notify me that a SMS has arrived? I realize there is a lag in receiving these but that's not my problem. I'll open GV and see 5 SMS messages that have been there for an hour and I received no notification.

The Principle Behind GV
There is an excellent YouTube Video that explains the principles of GV: YouTube - GoogleVoice's Channel
So assuming you want to use the GV number as the only number you give everyone, here are some possible advantages and shortcomings:
ADVANTAGE: between the market app for your phone and the web interface, you can shut off any "Visual Voice Mail" (Verizon) service you might have, save a few dollars a month and some phone memory.
SHORTCOMING: The voice quality from GV is not as good as Verizon's but is acceptable especially given the transcription feature.
ADVANTAGE: Voicemail transcription. Very cool.
SHORTCOMING: Possible increase in Texting Costs. Assuming you do not have an unlimited texting plan, you need to shut off SMS text notification of new voicemail (defaults on I believe). You can receive email alerts for free, and if you use the Android GV app (and you should) you won't need either as the ap does the notification.
You can outbound text for free thru the web interface, inbound texts to your GV number that are passed through do count as out of plan text messages so you'll need to get around that using email notification. If you are a big texter and don't have an unlimited plan, this is going to be an issue if you want to maintain the illusion of having a single number.
SHORTCOMING: Possible increase in airtime costs. There are several caveats here. I will explain for a Verizon Wireless Plan with unlimited "In" minutes and the capability to assign 10 friends and family numbers as "In".
"In" means unlimited airtime.
Using GV for inbound and outbound calls, you will see two new numbers on your cell bill: for incoming calls including calls you initiate through the browser interface, you will see the GV number you chose.
For outgoing calls made from the handset using the GV app, you will see some number in your area code or a nearby area code that your cell dials to make the connection to the person you are calling. The person sees the GV number on their callerID but your phone actually dials another number to connect.
The way to get around these airtime costs given the Verizon plan scheme above is to add these two numbers to your Family and Friends list.
Note that the phone does seem to dial the same number to make outgoing connections. You (and I) will need to keep tabs on that to make sure it doesn't change.
I have heard about reliability issues but have none yet to report.
I haven't noticed any impact to in call voice quality that you might expect given what I assume is routing through GV infrastructure.
Can you use Handcent with Google voice? How? I know it will only do SMS, but I cant seem to configure. I do not have a texting plan, I am not a big texter, but on occasion, I would like to do it. I can do it inside GoogleVoice app, but want the Handcent features.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got a Google Voice invite yesterday and set up my number, cell fwd, etc. I installed the GV app from the market, and it got into a FC loop every time I tried to fire it up. I then installed the .2 apk from the web, and now I'm getting this message that says "unable to get hold of subscriber information." I edited some information for the forwarding cell number, re-activated it, uninstalled and reinstalled the apk, and it's not working. I've read somewhere that someone was able to get it working
