Android :: Can An App Upgrade Itself?

Mar 27, 2010

Is it possible for an app to upgrade itself? I am trying it but it doesn't seem to work. My app downloads its upgrade, starts the upgrade/installation process which finishes successfully but when I start the app its still the old one. When I installed my app normally I was seeing "Not granting permission android.permission.INSTALL_PACKAGES to package <package name>" in logs. So based on another thread http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread. I installed the app in /system/app folder so now there is no error message but result is still same. Do I need a separate installer app to upgrade my app?

I heard rumors and saw pictures of an EVO-esque phone (not the Merge) hitting verizon in I don't know how long. What phone should I get? I don't care about a physical keyboard. Id like a big screen, HDMI, and a front facing camera, any phones on Verizon like this, or upcoming? (Not the X).

HTC EVO 4G :: Cant Upgrade Android After Rooting

Nov 10, 2010

I have an EVO 4G, while running 2.1 I rooted the phone so i can thether. all works fine. My question is do I need to reflash to an original 2.1 rom in order to upgrade to 2.2 or higher. The reason I ask is when I try to upgrade the software through Sprint to 2.2 it crashes. So Im thinking it senses the phone has been rooted. If the answer is yes. I have 2 more questions. 1. Will the flash reset my entire phone reseting everything Ie contacts and such or will it just reset the android. And the other is where can you get an original virgin 2.1 or pos a 2.2 rom thats has not been messed with and is safe safe.

Is there another version of it out there that I am not seeing or am I just stuck until they reopen beta or just release the app?

Android :: GeoCoding Fails After SDK Upgrade To 8

After the upgrade, when I call the getFromLocation method, it doesn't return any addresses and I see a message in the logcat to the effect that GLS failed with status 20. My Google Maps API key is working fine because I'm seeing the map tiles, but GeoCoding is broken. It works fine if I run a previous (SDK 7) build of my app.

HTC Desire :: Going Android 2.2 Without Carrier Upgrade

May 28, 2010

I just arrived to the Android world as the Desire is my first Android device. I would be grateful if someone could answer my question. I *did* search the forum for the answer before posting, but being completely new to Android, I couldn't find the one that would satisfy me - so if it is out there, please forgive me for asking it here.Anyway, coming from the N900 I was used to OTA OS updates without restrictions. Now, I'm looking forward to the 2.2 version of the Android (mostly for Flash 10.1 and apps installable on the SD card). However, I got the impression (hopefully a wrong one) that in order to install 2.2 on your Desire (unlocked), it must be pushed by your phone service provider/carrier (as opposed to the N900 where you could just download it and flash your device with it or upgrade over-the-air). This is a problem for me, since the carriers in my country don't seem to be interested in sending any OS upgrades (to any device) and the upgrade must be done manually. As I mentioned, the device is not locked to any carrier (if by that it means that you can put any SIM card in it and it works). Now, I know you could root your Desire and do it, but I'm wondering if there will be a way to upgrade to 2.2 (or just replace by flashing) without rooting? Also, if rooting is my only option - how dangerous is it? The N900 came rooted out-of-the-box (you just download the app to gain superuser privileges) so I have no idea what are the possible risks of doing it on your Desire. Can it permanently damage the phone?

Android :: In Place Upgrade Of App Outside Of Market

Jun 8, 2009

I know that the Android Market detects and supports in-place upgrades of apps. I know that using developer tools, you can do in-place upgrades of apps. Suppose, though, that you are distributing your APK through other means, whether it be a third-party market (e.g., AndAppStore, SlideME), or just via your own Web site. How do you do in-place upgrades? Is it just a matter of downloading the new APK and telling Android to install it, or is there some other magic that is needed?

Android :: App Icon Not Working After Upgrade

Sep 14, 2010

I have an app with about 200.000 users and recently upgraded it. This has worked fine before but now I suddenly got 30-40 emails and lot of 1* because the app icon didn't work anymore. It said the program wasn't installed. If they went to "My Downloads" in the Android Market they could open the app just fine from there.I asked the users to reboot and that solved the issue for all of them. Four days later I had to update again and the problem reappeared for the users. 30-40 new emails and I am very concerned about pushing out new upgrades. This problem seemed to affect different devices but at least HTC Desire with 2.1 was affected. Is this an Android bug or related in some way to my Manifest file? I don't believe I have changed anything in the manifest lately to trigger anything like this.Hope someone can provide any assistance.

Android :: Verify Error In App After Upgrade?

Jan 8, 2010

Sometimes, when a user updates my app from the market (from one version to another) they get a VerifyError upon running the app. It happens to a random class; you can use part of the app, then going to a different Activity in the app causes it to blow up. This only happens once; once Dalvik gets it out of its system it never happens again.

Since it only happens once per update (and most of the time, not at all), it is admittedly a minor issue, but I think it reflects badly on my app, so if anyone has any ideas that would be great.

The stack traces don't seem that helpful, since they always happen in a different place (which further confuses me).

Here's an example of one:
