In Android if I have an edit text and the user entered 123456789012, how could I get the program to insert a dash every 4th character. ie: 1234-5678-9012? I guess you need to say something along the lines of:- a=Characters 1~4, b=Characters 5~8, c=Characters 9-12,

When debugging I've sometimes wanted a tool that would list running tasks and show which activities are on the history stack for each task. I can get a list of tasks by calling ActivityManager.getRunningTasks(). Each ActivityManager.RunningTaskInfo object in the list gives me interesting information such as the base activity, top activity, and number of activities in the task. I haven't found a way to actually enumerate all the activities in the task's history stack. Is there a way to get at such information?

I am going through the android hello world tutorial, and have been stuck when trying to create an XML UI. For some reason, even on a new program, in which I have made no changes to the default build, it gives the error java.lang.NullPointerException after every character I type. I can't figure out why it is doing this, as I am just trying to edit the text between the Text I want to set it to say something other than what is set by default. However, even with a fresh build, no changes, and I just try to change the text within the xml tags, it still gives the error. What do I need to do to allow it to let me type? I am using the eclips IDE and the android sdk. I was able to do the first part of the tutorial that doesn't involve XML.

I need to be able to scroll through a list with (up to) 20K rows, backed by a cursor on a read-only db. Testing 20K rows on a G1, the query takes approx .02s regardless of table size, while binding the adapter to the list takes 4.5s. Note that this is before the view calls used in rendering. What makes the binding delay more troublesome is that it blocks the UI thread, and is incurred on every rotate. Combine these, and doing a rotate just after starting the bind results in a delay up to 9s.
I tried lazy loading with a base adapter, but that hits the same delay in the underlying cursor.getCount(), and the overall user experience isn't ideal. I also considered using an ArrayAdapter, adding synthesized objects from the cursor rows, but then I'd incur the overhead of creating up to 20K objects (not to mention the additional memory requirements).

I'm a little bit confused about supporting SPP by Android API(from level 5). As I understand it wasn't supported in versions before API level 5 what we can read in discussion below.(First Nick's post) http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa. But it was in October and after that we have APi from 5 to 7 now released. And my question is do all these API's support SPP? As I read in other discussions some phones makes more difficulties than others. Which mobile phone you can recommend?

Having an odd problem here. I'm aware of Verizon's limit on text messaging characters but this is odd.I can send texts going beyond 160 characters but when I receive them, that's when the trouble starts. I'll get the text broken up into 2-3 separate texts, but always followed up by another message stating "Media Objects were removed...". Then, the person sending the text receives a message stating their text may have not been received. This is all between Verizon to Verizon customers.Anyone know what's going on? or how to fix it? Did not have this problem with other Verizon phones so I'm guessing it's only applying to the Droid/Eris?

I've only seen this mentioned once or twice but one thing that annoys me with the update is the character number that's displayed when typing a text. Why did they have to put a black box counter right in the messaging window when typing in portrait mode? After creating a message, that box covers part of the last word in the first line. And when flipping it to landscape the character box disappears!!?! I shouldn't have to turn the phone to read back what I just typed. The concept of displaying the amount of characters left is a welcome feature but the execution is really poor. I would think it would be obvious to place it in another area outside of the field that you're actually interacting with.

First Android phone and just switched to Verizon. I was sending a text and it was over 160 characters. I sent it and got a message saying that if I am texting a non Verizon customer they will only get the first 160 characters...I've had an iPhone and a Blackberry on ATT and it would split the message up for me and send a couple if it was over 160. Is there no way to do this on the Droid? Do I seriously have to try and squeeze everything into 160 characters like I did when I had the RAZR?

I'm developing an Android application and I would really like to deploy it for the iPhone as well. However, I do not know Objective-C and I think it would take an annoyingly long time to figure that and the Apple framework out. Is there a recommended way to port an Android application to iOS? Would the best bet be to hire a freelancer?

I found this dock that is almost what I'm looking for, but I don't like FM transmitters. I prefer just to use a cable for the sound since it's clearer and I don't have to keep fiddling with stations when I get feedback. All the other docks that I've found are window mounted suction cup deals. Does anyone know of a dock that plugs into the cigarette lighter, but doesn't have the FM transmitter?

I have got a project on Android application- silent features in my college. We have to develop an android app which will put the phone in silent mode for all incoming calls, expect for those the user selects (for these selected contacts the phone should ring).
Is there any online tutorials available for android where i can start learning android programming ? As i don't have much time left to join any classes for the same. This project has to be submitted within 3 weeks.

How do I find the users available Google Calendars and then create an event in one of those calendars?
Direct access to the Calendar on the handset is for some unknown bizarre reason UNSUPPORTED and not documented and untestable unless you have EVERY single device and ROM. Therefore blind development, cr4p for users and cr4p when you have to blame Google.
Aren't we developing apps to help users with their day-to-day things? Accessing and creating events in a calendar ON THE HANDSET would sem like a logical day-to-day thing to do?
Anyway so I turned to the GDATA API. However the documentation bears no resemblance to anything available for the android SDK. The documented classes stated to be available to be used for Calendar access are not available in the downloadable libraries!?!?!? http://code.google.com/apis/calendar/data/2.0/developers_guide_java.html
So my question, how do I find the users available Google Calendars and then create an event in one of those calendars from an Android app?
Any links posted which say 'see here' please make sure the code is valid for android! :)
(code examples would be great - oh and preferably using the users credentials on the handset to login to the Calendar).
