I need help finding the best method for networking in a multiplayer game. I want to connect to a phone and maintain the connection until the game is over, hosting the game on one of the phones. There are other threads, but none of them really explain how to connect or use the networking, only saying to use such-and-such library. Examples or links to good tutorials would be extremely helpful.

I'm still currently making my mind up over whether to go Android (nexus one/HTC Bravo) or iPhone. I use quite a lot of apps on my current Nokia, and whilst have had a very quick response on this forum to an equivalent to the one I could not live without, I find it annoying I can't really look round the android marketplace to understand the apps without having an android phone in the first place! Is there a way to browse the marketplace without having a phone first?

I'm pleased to announce a very quick, hacked together proxy server approach which should let you browse the web (just the web, not the whole internet) from your PC via your tethered device.
I've tested on Windows & Linux and there's no reason (that I can see) that it wont work from a mac.
However, this is highly experimental and somewhat tricky to set up. It's also my first ever Android app and was built from scratch in the last few hours.
http://graha.ms/androidproxy
Let me know how you get on! I'd love to see how it performs on a 3g network.

Is it possible to do something like WebView#loadUrl("http://10.0.0.2/ index.html") with service acting as local http server? Where would one start? Will I need at least partial http server implementation that would listen on the socket?

I have a web service running on my local machine, and I used IP address 10.0.2.2 to connect from the emulator to that web service, but when I try that on a Nexus One connected via USB, I get a timeout. Is there a way to access my machine from a real phone like I can from an emulator?

My activity needs to communicate with a java server located on my dev machine. Actually, using the emulator, I can access the server socket via the special 10.0.2.2 address. Now I'd like to test my app on my phone connected via usb, but it seems like I can't use 10.0.2.2 to access my dev machine localhost anymore. Naturally using a wifi router and a proper lan addressing does the trick, but I need to use usb connection instead. Any hint ?
1. Emulator-based scenario: standard java server running on my pc @localhost:15000 android java client running on my emulator. When the android app needs to contact the server it uses 10.0.2.2:15000 like specified here. Everything works fine.
2. Proper wifi scenario with physical connected device: standard java server running on my pc @192.168.1.10:15000. android java client running on my device with 192.168.1.11 address assigned. When the android app needs to contact the server it uses 192.168.1.10:15000 and everything works fine too.
3. Desired scenario: standard java server running on my pc @localhost:15000. android java client running on my device connected via usb cable. No network is active. When the android app needs to contact the server it tries to connect to 10.0.2.2:15000 but instead an exception is thrown (Network unreachable). It seems like special address 10.0.2.2 works only for emulator instances. I just wonder if in the adb/adt suite there's a way to access pc address from the device connected via usb cable.

Is there an application that will allow you to browse to a folder on your phone/SD care and view the photos inside? If it were on a linux PC I would be installing GThumb, on windows ACDSEE. I have tried Photo Burst. It crashes and I had to reset the phone. I have tried Picture Viewer but the latest version does not pan at all. The only way to do something like this with the stock viewer is to have all your photos in the root of the sdcard in folders or within download. Not really the neatest way of doing this.

Can you tell me (viz. those of you with a working hotspot!), can you still use your browser when the hotspot is active. Just turning the hotspot on on my desire cuts the (mobile data) internet connection with the browser, and anything else!
In fact even after turning off the hotspot I have to toggle mobile data on/off & toggle APN's to get mob. data back.
Also which Orange APN's/usernames/passwords do you have success with & which not?
I have tried all the posted solutions & even HTC technical!
Any bright ideas anyone?
I think my last resort is to de-brand (unlocked Tmob used on Orange sim) I reckon!
I have to get this working for use abroad. It's driving me nuts!

Any way to browse a PC directory structure using an android phone (Galaxy Note 2 in this case) and maybe download files directly to my SD card?

I was just wondering if anyone solved this problem. Googling gives tons of posts having this question but not one with a proper reply. I tried literally every combination of the following two pieces of code with and without proxy:
CODE:....
I am trying to connect to a site on my intranet (its not localhost). I've tried the following:
Setting Proxy inside Eclipse settings. Setting my own localhost and writing a small php script that takes the url, connects to it and then gets the file from the intranet site - This works from the Browser though! It does not work when I use the 10.0.2.2 IP address

I came across an interesting issue when testing android 2.2.
My testing was to use webview api,webview.loadUrl(url);
If url is from any public domain, ex, www.google.com, the web content is rendered very well.
[url]
If url is from local host, ex, tomcat with port 8080, the web content is rendered as well.
[url]
But if url is from other port, ex, websphere with port 9080, the web content is not rendered.
[url]
There is no exception thrown, and it shows blank on the emulator.
Is there any setting needed for different port?

Is it possible to set up Android in ad-hoc peer-to-peer wifi mode? For example, I would like to have one phone broadcast a message, and have all peers in the network receive the broadcast, without having a server. I would like to use wifi since bluetooth range is more limited.

Been doing some android networking lately. Having some trouble actually sending the data back and forth.
Java -> Server (runs on the desktop): its job is to constantly listen on a port and connect clients. Once a client connects, it creates a new JFrame with a graphics class.(Basically a giant canvas) There is a separate thread that is always listening to the client.
Android -> Client: An android device is the client. Its job is to connect to the server, with a given IP/Port. Once the connection has been established, it changes (setView) the view to a canvas. On the canvas there is a box that moves based on touch input.
Objective: The box moves on the android screen, but it doesn't move in the JFrame window.
I think the information is not being relayed. I have tried dataOutputStream. But for some reason there is a major Lag in sending the information. (Not waiting for serverSocket) Basically i want a real time updates. As the box moves on the android device, it should also move on the JFrame.

I've been scouring the web looking for information on setting up a peer-to-peer connection between Android handsets and so far have drawn a blank. The only thing I can definitively seem to work out is that it was made a whole lot more difficult when XMPP was removed from 1.0. Apart from that, I find a couple of threads on an OpenIntents board about porting an XMPP implementation to Android that were last posted nearly 2 years ago. Has anybody solved this problem effectively? What's the best way of doing it (from a games point of view)?

According to the emulator docs, you should be able to enable/disable networking with the F8 key. I doesn't work for me and I'm trying to determine why.
I'm developing on OSX Leopard. I've also tried in a virtual Windows instance (Windows 2008 server running in Parallels). No luck in either case.
I've tried the obvious stuff like fn + F8, etc.
Should there be any sort of visual cue that networking has gone online or offline when F8 is pressed?
