Android : How To Start An Activity In OnPause Method?
Aug 10, 2010
I have a webview and when I do some java-script processing on it. I click on a link to play a video, after the video finishes in full screen. I want to return to my webpage in the same state I left it before clicking to play the video. How can I do it? Any snippets?

I am trying to get a UI to present itself when an incoming SMS happens. When that happens, I would like to present a UI to the user.
I have a BroadcastReceiver class that listens to the SMS_RECEIVED event. I also have an Activity class that is capable of displaying the needed UI when the event happens.
The questions is: How do I start the activity from within the onReceive method of BroadcastReceiver?
I know others have done this but I can't seem to find any resources that illustrates how.

I tried the following from an activity:
@Override public void onPause() { super.onPause();
postDelayed(new Runnable() { public void run() { mTextView.setText("I am paused!"); }, 10000); }
The activity, while in the background, still executes the runnable. Is this incorrect? Should we absolutely call removeCallback() from our onPause() handler to ensure that no postDelayed() runnables execute if we get paused? Or is it necessary to do this only in onDestroy()?

I have a small test application I am working on which has a timer that updates a textview to countdown from 100 to 0. That works fine, but now I am trying to pause the application if the user presses the back button on the phone and then restart the timer from where they left off when they reopen the app.
From the Log.v() prints I see that the _timer_time_remaining variable has the correct number of seconds stored when onPause is called, but it is set back to 0 when onResume starts. Why does the variable get reset? I thought that the application would continue to run in the background with the same values. Am I missing something? This is all declared in a class that extends Activity.

I have an application where I navigate from Activity A to Activity B and back to A and then B. I want to resume the activity B (which has a Bundle passed to it ) from Activity A. The documentation says that OnSaveInstance() is called only when the activity is killed, so how do i use OnPause which does not have the Bundle to resume the activity B.

I have an application with contains multiple activities. The main activity will start the others ( use startActivity() ) depends on user event, when an activity close, it calls finish() and return back to main activity. It appears to behavior like that.
However, the "problem" I see is main activity's onCreate function is called every time. I think the the main activity should be placed in the activity stack and simply push to front when others exit, therefore only onResume, onStart are called. Is there some flag I need to set or I misunderstand the activity behaviro?
In child activity, besides calling finish() or startActivity for main activity, what is other way to move main activity to front?

I created an application which enables the user to set whether he wants to receive notification while the application runs in background mode. If the notifications are enabled an activity should be started (the dialog should appear on the screen).
I tried to enabled it the following way:
CODE:...........
This is the method from main activity. When onPause() is executed isRunningInBackground is set true.
When I tried to debug it when the main application was running in the background the line
startActivity(intent) had no effect (the activity didn't appear).
Does anyone know how to midify the logic in order to start an activity from the main activity when the main activity is running in the background (after onPause() is called)?

The following code leads to "java.lang.IllegalThreadStateException: Thread already started." the second time it is run through on the program This happens the second time updateUI.start() is called. I've stepped through it multiple times and the thread is called and completely runs to completion before hitting updateUI.start(). Calling updateUI.run() avoids the error but causes the thread to run in the UI thread (the calling thread, as mentioned in other posts on SO), which is not what I want. Can a Thread be started only once? If so than what do I do if I want to run the thread again? This particular thread is doing some calculation in the background, if I don't do it in the thread than it's done in the UI thread and the user has an unreasonably long wait.

I have tried to write an Android application with an activity that should be launched from a different application. It is not a content provider, just an app with a gui that should not be listed among the installed applications. I have tried the code examples here and it seems to be quite easy to launch existing providers and so on, but I fail to figure out how to just write a "hidden" app and launch it from a different one.
The basic use case is:
App A is a normal apk launchable from the application list.
App B is a different apk with known package and activity names, but is is not visible or launchable from the application list.
App A launches app B using the package and class names (or perhaps a URI constructed from these?).
I fail in the third step. Is it possible to do this?

I have a huge maze of activities in my application. What I need to do, is that when the user logs in into the system, the activity history should be cleared. I cant just use finish() when I start a new activity, because I want the activities to have a history until the user logs in. I have experimentet with the different flags when starting an activity, but I have had no success.

I have a tab widget where one of the tabs is a chat-type feature. I want to update the chat data at an interval (variable depending on whether the chat tab is active or not).
The best approach seemed to be using an AsyncTask in my main TabActivity class, as that would avoid any issues of the chat activity being destroyed while in the background, while an AsyncTask was running. I wanted to ensure that the Activity isn't destroyed and recreated, thus causing my AsyncTask to be unable to modify the actual active Activity's data.
However, now that my AsyncTask is in the TabActivity activity, I don't have a direct way to call my Chat's ListAdapter notifyDataSetChanged() from my onPostExecute() method anymore. Is there a way to get a reference to a given Tab's current Activity from the TabHost/TabActivity?
Or, alternatively, can I assume my chat activity will never be destroyed as a child activity of the TabActivity activity (well, never destroyed while the TabActivity is active at least), and then just put the AsyncTask in the Chat Activity?

I would like to access the public method of an Activity run by a TabActivity using: Code...
Basically, what I what is to let the parent Activity call a method in child Activity in order to do something. Is this possible?
I did try this:((TeamHuddleScreenMsgsView)getTabHost().getCurrentTabView().getContext()).refreshModel(); but I'm encountering a ClassCastException. It seems that the getContext() still gives the TabActivity. Any help on how to get the child Activity?

I have created two classes: Example1 and Example2, which extends activity.
Example1 contains a UI of buttons, while Example2 contains UI of TextEdit.
I want to call Example2 when a button is clicked, so this code is in an onclick method
Intent i = new Intent();
i.setClassName("com.a.ui", "com.a.ui.Example2");
startActivity(i);
So I am able to get the UI of Example2 successfully.
What's an alternate way of calling intent?
Is there any alternate way to start an activity?
