Android :: Handle Existing Instance Root Activity Launching Root Activity From Intent Filter

Apr 3, 2010

I'm having difficulties handling multiple instances of my root (main) activity for my application. My app in question has an intent filter in place to launch my application when opening an email attatchment from the "Email" app. My problem is if I launch my application first through the the android applications screen and then launch my application via opening the Email attachment it creates two instances of my root activity. steps: Launch root activity A, press home Open email attachment, intent filter triggers launches root activity A Is it possible when opening the Email attachment that when the OS tries to launch my application it detects there is already an instance of it running and use that or remove/clear that instance?

Android :: New Activity Instance Created For Every Intent-filter?

Feb 6, 2010

I'm using an intent-filter on URLs for my activity:

CODE:...............

the launchMode attribute is set to "singleTop", but it looks like a new activity is created every time I click a matching url. I thought that if the activity is already alive somewhere, it would simply be brought to the front of my activity stack?

I tried this on the emulator/device, same behavior, a new activity instance is always created.

Android : Can't Get Intent Filter To Launch Activity From A Uri

Aug 14, 2010

I'm trying to figure out how to launch an activity in my app from a custom URI such as myapp://myuriactivity I've read a lot about the intent and intent filters in the android references and also read several examples, but for some reason I can't get my simple test to work. Below is my manifest file, can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? With the below file, if I open the browser and try to navigate to http://org.test.launchtest it just says the page doesn't exist. Shouldn't this work?

Android :: Filtering Urls Within An Activity's Intent-filter?

Feb 6, 2010

I'm registering an intent-filter on an activity to listen for url clicks from a certain domain:

CODE:.............

This works, but is there a way to filter out certain urls from my domain? For example, my app can only do something useful for the user if it gets a url like: www.mywebsite.com/orange

But if the user clicks on a link like: www.mywebsite.com/blue

I can't do anything useful for them, so I'd like to just let them continue using the browser to open that url. Is there a way I get a chance to see the URL before android pops up the chooser dialog and presents my app as a possible handler for the url? Is there some method in Activity which allows me to filter?

Android :: Launching Intent From Class Outside An Activity

Jul 28, 2010

I've got two activities, one of them is called MyActivity. I want both of them to be able to use a function located in a class othat we may call MyClass. In MyClass, I try to use an intent to launch the activity AnotherActivity. Since the constructor takes a context as parameter, I simply tried to store a context from the activity in the constructor, and then use it when I try to create my intent. However, even thought none of the arguments are null (checked that with a simple if-statement), intent seems to be null and a NullPointerException is thrown. Why does it not work, and what can I do to solve the problem?
I'm quite new to Android and Java development, so please explain it as basic as you can.

Android :: Update Intent Of An Existing Activity While Calling StartActivity

Sep 13, 2010

I am having two activities, say activity A and B. Activity A is an ListActivity, and when the items in the list is selected, it will call startActivity() to bring up B. The problem here is that when I am in B and click the home key, and then go to the application launcher to resume my application, A will be brought up again. This time when I click a different item in A, it will bring up B with the old data of the previously selected item before the home key was clicked.

After examinzing the code, I found that the startActivity does not update the intent of B. I found a post here about the similar question, and the answer was to overwrite the onNewIntent. However, I found that it doesn't work, because this method never get called when the second time I call startActivity. I am sure that this is the same instance, because I've printed out the instance number. Is there any other ways to update the intent of the activity? Or I need some other settings to make the onNewIntent get called? I didn't set any flags or launch modes, so everything is default.

Android :: Pausing VideoView When Launching A New Intent / Resume It To Starts Up Activity Again?

Jul 23, 2009

I have an activity that is showing a video and when the user clicks a button, a new activity is launched. When the video activity stops, I pause the video view. When the video activity starts up again, I try to resume the video view videoView.start(), however, the video starts over from the beginning. I'm thinking that the buffer must be lost somewhere, so I now try to capture the current position via videoView.getCurrentPosition(), however, this is always returning 0.

Anybody know how to resume video playback when an activity starts up again?

Android :: Handle OAuth Callback Using Intent-filter

I have the following in my AndroidManifest.xml:

CODE:..............

Where www.test.com will be substituted with a domain that I own.

It seems :

This filter is triggered when I click on a link on a page. It is not triggered on the redirect by Yahoo, the browser opens the website at www.test.com It is not triggered when I enter the domain name directly in the browser.

When exactly this intent-filter will be triggered? Any changes to the intent-filter or permissions that will widen the filter to apply to redirect requests?

Android :: No Activity Found To Handle Intent - Act - Android.accounts.AccountAuthenticator

Jun 28, 2010

I'm trying to have my app display my login activity when a user selects add account in accounts&sync or wants to use the app and isn't logged in yet. I've followed the example SampleSyncAdapter fairly closely, but can't get it to work.

In my auth service:

In my manifest:

In my main activity:

I've tried doing both

CODE:.......

And

CODE:............

Before the startActivity() call, but it still can't find an activity for that intent. If I try to add an account via accounts&sync the app crashes with the same ActivityNotFoundException.

I've examined c99's last.fm app, which defines a custom action and uses intents based on that action rather than android.accounts.AccountManager.ACTION_AUTHENTICATOR_INTENT. Is that a better approach? Is there a way to make it work with Accounts & Sync?

Android :: Handle Screen Orientation Changes With An Activity Started Within A Tab's Activity

Nov 2, 2010

I have a TabActivity, and each Tab corresponds to its own Activity. In one of them, in the onCreate method, I use startActivityForResult to show a dialog (specifically, Bump's BumpAPI activity).

code:...............

The problem is that when the screen orientation changes, it tries to create the tab's activity again which makes another BumpAPI dialog, resulting in multiple stacked on top of each other. Do I have a hook into the started activity to cancel the previous one when the orientation changes?

A workaround seems to be to add a button that when clicked, starts the second activity, but that adds an unnecessary step.

Also, I can't fix the screen orientation for the entire tabActivity because some of them require typing and users may want to use their physical keyboards.

Create New Activity Or Update View Of Existing Activity?

Dec 24, 2012

I am working on developing an app and I am not sure when should I use a new activity and when should I update the existing view.

For example, lets say I have a view that shows a multiple choice question. Now, when the user selects his choices and clicks on say "Evaluate", I want to show the same question view but along with the right answers and explanations for each option. So does that mean, I should send an Intent upon a click on Evaluate or I should just update the view (i am not sure how)?

If I send an intent and show a new screen, how can the user go back to the next question without displaying the answers? If I don't create an new activity, how can I update the existing view that is already displayed?

Android :: Exclude Own Activity From Activity.startActivity - Intent

As a consequence, my main Activity has declared an intent filter on ACTION_SEND_MULTIPLE for image/* mimetypes and can result in issuing a new Intent with the same action and data type using Activity.startActivity(Intent).

Is there a way to exclude my own activity from the list of apps that is displayed to the user after the startActivity() call ?

However, when I run my "singleTask" activity for a few scenarios and monitors behaviour with "adb shell dumpsys activity" I can see it placed both at the top of the stack (with numActivities=2) and in the middle of the stack (with numActivities=3). The activity at the root (frontOfTask=True) has a "normal" launchMode. Is the documentation incorrect or am I missing something?

Android :: Recover An Instance Of An Activity

May 9, 2010

I have a bunch of tab activities (which I implemented myself, didn't want to use the tabviews with activities inside them), so It's basically 5 activities calling each other every time the user clicks on the tabs displayed as a row of LinearLayouts at the bottom of the screen.

The thing is that the way I do it now, everytime the user jumps from one activity to another, a new activity is created and launched. Of course, I can see I'm wasting resources this way. So what I would like to do is to create every activity only once; and then if the user wants to go back to the previous (or any one that was already created and is probably paused) just check on some kind of list or array to see if the activity can be recovered and only in the case it can't; to lauch a new one.

My question is, how can I check this? should I save the intents? and how to recover the activities afterwards? I'm kind of new with java.

Android :: How Finish An Activity In This Instance

Aug 16, 2010

We all know that hitting the back button on the device doesn't kill the application, it merely finishes (destroys) the activity running on the foreground.

Well I have come across some code which helps me capture the back button signal so that I cannot exit the application. The only way to exit it in such cases is to press the home key.

Now this situation presents me with a unique disadvantage! The inability to kill finish the application on a time of my own choosing allows the application to keep running in the background like nothing has changed.

So in such cases is the task manager my only friend or is there a way for me to otherwise kill this application?
