Android :: How Do I Know If A Number Is Stored On My SD Card?
Apr 6, 2010
I have rather annoying SD Card saving question: How do i know if a number is stored on my SD Card? I only ask because i recently got my Droid replaced No worries, nothing really wrong happened to it, just the power on/off button got like stuck, it worked fine just had to push it down kinda weird, anyhow took it in to get looked at and my friend was ill just replace it and get a new one ! he works verizon, so got a new droid ! Anyways, i figured all my numbers were stored on the SD Card, but lo and behold i lost about 2-5 numbers, but the weird thing was, it saved like the name and profile, even the email, but not the number?? So i was wondering if i could see or find out which numbers were stored on the SD Card and which on the phone?

Using k9 mail (v4.311) on my android device. I have it set to retrieve at most 500 messages.
However, this does not limit the actual # of messages stored on the device itself. My initial assumption was that after 500 messages were retrieved, on subsequent retrievals, new emails would replace the oldest. This does not seem to be the case. As new messages are received, old ones still remain.
Is there a way to set this software to keep at most a certain # of message - that is, to have new messages REPLACE older ones?
If not, what software/app provides this functionality?

My guess is that there is an advantage to having many things stored on my SD card on my Droid (like freeing up main memory to make sure the speed and efficiency are there).
However, thus far, I have received NO PROMPTS when installing anything (apps, pictures, etc) regarding where I would like things to go. Also, I just pulled up "SD Card and Phone Storage" on my device and it says "SD Card- Total Space 1.86GB, Available Space - 1.86GB" (clearly nothing there!)
Why am I never getting prompted with an option to store things (like photos I transfer from my Desktop) to the SC card?
Can someone walk me through this and also suggest what things SHOULD be going on my SD card to make my device work smoothly?

I have phone numbers stored that was transferred from my HTC phone that have a "p" in the dialing sequence to introduce a pause for e.g. a calling card. When this number is used in the X10 it will not recognize the "p" as a pause.
What is the correct character to use?

I have an app which stores some files on the SD Card. After several uninstall and install, sometimes, the files just got deleted. Is that normal for android os to do that? What should I do to make sure that those files won't be deleted automatically?

Someone I know is currently in the process of having their Droid (original) replaced because someone installed spyware on it. What I'm looking into right now is whether or not we'll have to wipe the card because of this. Is spyware typically stored on the phone, or the card? I would expect it to be on the phone since that's where Android applications are typically kept, but I want to be sure.

Has anyone else noticed that in the FroYo ROMS, the entire app is not stored on the SD card? If I click on the SD card tab under 'manage applications' and look at a certain app (Astro, eg.), it only shows that 1.5mb is stored on the SD card. I know for certain that Astro is around 3.5mb. I've experienced this with every FroYo ROM I've had.

Is it possible to have all SMS (text messages) automatically stored to the SD card? I recently had to reflash my ROM and as such have lost all the messages I had stored - about 800 or so from my partner and a few semi-important ones from both work and my basketball coach.

At time, after rebooting, the apps are available as they should be. Also, I can download apps when the SD card apps are not available, but they will not install. Running UD8. Anyone have any help? I download a video off of Myxer. It didn't have any sound so I want to delete it. I can't find it ANYWHERE in the files folder of the memory card. And I don't know how to switch it over so I can look in the phone's memory. So my question is where are things I downloaded stored on the phone or memory card? I looked everywhere and can't find it!

I am saving contacts on my Xperia X10 and am not sure if they are saving to phone or the SIM card? How can u tell where they are being stored? Just now I am going into phonebook and selecting new contact from the sub menu once I hit the key on the left it then displays.
First and Last
Phone Number
Email Address etc.
I take it this will store details to phone memory? Is there a way I can store contact only to SIM card and if so how?

So, the moron at the Verizon store who was activating my replacement Droid decided to import or retrieve contact data from my broken droid / SD card....he didn't know that it handled all the contacts from the cloud. As soon as I entered my gmail login it imported all my contacts and so, now I have contacts with duplicate data and some contacts that are now just phone numbers. I tried deleting the contact data and resyncing but it appears to be grabbing this duplicate data from somewhere. All my contacts are CLEAN in gmail when viewed online. But if I look on the phone, when go to edit them each person has 1 contact with multiple google contacts merged together. The problem is, any time I go to search contacts or enter a contact in email or create a contact shortcut, all of them are appearing twice in the selection list.
I went through each contact and split the merges, essentially deleting the dupes, but they are still appearing multiple times in the search/selection lists....and when I resync the dupes come back. I don't see anything that looks like contact data/backup on the SD card and don't know if that is something that can be deleted from the phone's memory or not?
[I know I can deleted all the dupes, but my concern is that I did this already and they came back. Is this data stored anywhere else that it might be pulling it from again when I sync?]

I have a project written for Android devices. It generates a large number of files, each day. These are all text files and images. The app uses a database to reference these files.
The app is supposed to clear up these files after a little use (perhaps after a few days), but this process may or may not be working. This is not the subject of this question.
Due to a historic accident, the organization of the files are somewhat naive: everything is in the same directory; a .hidden directory which contains a zero byte .nomedia file to prevent the MediaScanner indexing it.
Today, I am seeing an error reported:
CODE:................
Regarding the sdcard, I see it has plenty of storage left, but counting
$ cd /Volumes/NO_NAME/.hidden
$ ls | wc -w
9058
Deleting a number of files seems to have allowed the file creation for today to proceed.
Regrettably, I did not try touching a new file to try and reproduce the error on a commandline; I also deleted several hundred files rather than a handful.
However, my question is: Are there hard limits on filesize or number of files in a directory?
am I even on the right track here?
Nota Bene: The SD card is as-is - i.e. I haven't formatted it, so I would guess it would be a FAT-* format.
The FAT-32 format has hard limits of filesize of 2GB (well above the filesizes I am dealing with) and a limit of number of files in the root directory. I am definitely not writing files in the root directory.
