Android :: Handling Interrupted Exception Of AsyncTask?

Aug 13, 2010

I am using AsyncTask in my application.

The problem is that when server is down the AsyncTask throws an Interrupted exception. How to track that whether server is down or not.

CODE:.........

This same problem also occurs when the handset is kept idle for some time then keyguard gets lock and I suppose that WI-FI also gets disabled. So, when I enable the keyguard and if my application is in foreground then it gives the same exception. What should I do in order to remove this exception?

Android :: AsyncTask Interrupted Exception?

Aug 18, 2010

I am facing an issue with AsynsTask in my Application. I really do not understand the reason of it happening.

The issue is "The application works perfectly usually, now when any of the activity is displayed on the screen and I keep my device idle for a longer period of time. Then when I make the keyguard on the view of the last active activity is displayed to me. But as soon as I click on any component below mentioned exception is thrown. If the device is not kept for a longer period of time then there is no problem as such. The application makes http connection in onResume of most of the activities. I did this since every time the user comes to particular view then he should get the updates lists of posts from the webservice"

CODE:................

Let me know the reason behind this error and any solution to this?

Android :: Exception Handling ?

I read somewhere not to exception handle when developing in Android, is that true?

If one does need to exception handle are there any logging tools for 2.1 and above?

If shouldn't exception handle, why is it not recommended to at least use the below?
try {body-code} catch (exception-classname variable-name) {handler-code}

Android :: FileOutputStream And Exception Handling

Oct 11, 2010

I'm trying to run this piece of code inside my onCreate method as an initial test into writing private data for my app to use. This code is straight out of the Android SDK development guide located here (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#filesInternal)

CODE:................

However, this code give me errors for the 3 lines of code at the bottom. The error is an unhanded exception. The suggested quick fix is do to the following:

CODE:..........

But after doing that I get an error for the bottom two lines which states that fos may not be uninitialized. How can I fix this code? It's kind of annoying that the Android SDK gives you an example that doesn't even work.

I can't say I'm an expert at exception handling either.

Android :: ProgressDialog In AsyncTask Throws An Exception

Jun 25, 2010

I'm trying to make a simple ProgressDialog appear while my AsyncTask is fetching data. In my onPreExecute() method I have this: pd = ProgressDialog.show(c, "Loading...", "Please wait");

c is the context passed into the constructor of my AsyncTask from this.getApplicationContext(). Unfortunately, I keep getting an exception with this message: Unable to add window -- Token null is not for an application

What am I doing wrong?

Using this instead of this.getApplicationContext() has revealed another problem. When I call ProgressDialog.show(..., a ProgressDialog is displayed, but not until after the AsyncTask has completed. In other words, the data loads and then the dialog is displayed. If I include pd.dismiss() in my onPostExecute() then I never even see the dialog (presumable because it is closed before it ever gets opened).

It turns out that fetch.get() was hogging the UI thread and not letting the ProgressDialog display.

what i want is, to handle even if the handset got the lower spec hardware, it doesn't go to that exception (but it'll take a longer time to process the image) is it possible to do that?

The code snippet is like this:

Android :: How To Handle Throws Clause In Java Exception Handling

It was written like the below:

Now I come to class B where I will call this method like the below:

CODE:.............

I was asked a question in an interview as follows:

Why does the method have a throws Exception in its declaration? Is it that on of the methods called in the implementation throws the base class exception? Also If we get a exception during calling the method (fileConnect( )) control goes to catch block. After executing catch where should the control go, what should be sent to base case?

Android :: MyException Which Shows Toast Causes Trouble While Thrown In Threads - How Should Reorganize Exception Handling?

Oct 4, 2010

I have written my own Exception (MyException) and implemented Logging and showing Error Messages in Form of Toasts. Here is the shortform of it...

CODE:............

Everything was fine until I now implemented Threads where Exceptions are being thrown and caught.

You probably already have seen, that I played with the Looper Class, but honestly I don't know how to make it work. Is that the right approach? You also can see that I already store a reference of the ApplicationContext in my Controller. Shall I do it with the ActivityContext as well and than make the Toast from this ActivityContext? (But I heard that this is not a good practice in terms of performance)

Update

Is this the way I should go, when an Exception is being caught in a Thread in an Activ ity?

Android :: Instance Variable Of Activity Not Being Set OnPostExecute Of AsyncTask - Return Data From AsyncTask

Jul 28, 2010

I'm trying to figure out the correct way to create an AsyncTask to retrieve some data from the internet and then to take that data and bundle it up in an Intent and pass it to a new activity(A list display). So in the first activity I just have an EditText and Button. In the event of an OnClick the task should be called and when it is finished the data should be bundled inside an Intent and passed to the next Activity. The problem is when I take the results from onPostExecute and set them to an instance variable of the main activity, that instance variable is still null when the task is complete. Here is the barebones version of the code:

CODE:...........

When I debug the application I see onPostExecute does contain a valid PlacesList full of results, so why is the instance variable places set to null after the task is executed? I am going about "returning data" from an AsyncTask incorrectly?

A couple of weeks ago, it started having popup ads from Admob in the upper right corner of the screen. But it's right in the spot you need to see most to play the game. Is there a way to disable these ads? Or at least move them to the lower left corner?

Android :: Handling Orientation Changes Yourself

Jun 3, 2010

From the documentation regarding the android:configChanges='orientation' attribute of the activity tag in the manifest:

Using this attribute should be avoided and used only as a last-resort. Please read Handling Runtime Changes for more information about how to properly handle a restart due to a configuration change.

Why does it say this?

In the case of threads and networking requests via a service API library, a request could be made with a reference to the original Activity, and then an orientation change could occur, leaving the thread pointing to the old Activity.

While this can be fixed, it's tedious and ugly compared to just handling the configuration changes yourself.

Why should it be avoided?

I guess I should also ask: would this be an acceptable reason for doing the orientation configuration changes yourself?

Android :: Handling Of Multitouch?

I'm trying to do is draw circles around two points that are being touched, and as the fingers drag along on the screen, have these circles follow each finger.

However, I'm getting some weird behavior that I can't figure out. So when I place two fingers on the screen I get my circles no problem. When I drag around with the two fingers everything works like I want it. However, if I lift the first finger, everything stops redrawing, and the second finger that is still on the screen stops being tracked. If I place the first finger back on, everything behaves good again. I figure I must be handling the two fingers poorly.

Also, if I have two fingers on the screen, and I lift and touch the second finger, everything behaves well. It's only in the case where I have two fingers and I lift the first one do I see a problem.

Android :: Best Way Of Handling UI Code From Thread?

I know how to use handlers to update UI elements such as progress bars toasts etc. The problem I am having is when the context goes away such as the user pressing the back button or the Activity finishing for some reason. This causes my application to crash often. I tried using
getApplicationContext()
(Thinking that this would be available throughout my entire application) but this did not work, ever - instead my application crashed! I put try catch blocks around all UI update code, this works but is it necessary? What is the bast way to handle this?

Android :: Handling Multiple Accounts In App

May 11, 2010

I would like to build an application that caters for multiple accounts (eg. home, work) and account types (e.g. ISP, VoIP, Mobile). Essentially, I would like to get the user to create the accounts they want and then have all the accounts listed on the start page grouped by type.

For example:

ISP:
- Home
- Work

Mobile:
- Mum
- Dad

When you click on the account, it would take you to another screen where I do a bunch of calcs and display the results.

I currently do this via multiple apps but am looking at consolidating into the one app. I am just not sure where to start or how I go about achieving this? The way the Contacts app works is a good example of what I am wanting to do.
