Android :: APP Native Code For Android / How To Enable Exception Handling?
Jul 10, 2010
I am trying to make APP native code for Android. The Native code is in cplusplus. Whenever I try to make, the following error appears.
H236Plus.cpp:135: error: exception handling disabled, use -fexceptions to enable
How do I use -fexceptions to enable exception handling, and where do I use it?

I read somewhere not to exception handle when developing in Android, is that true?
If one does need to exception handle are there any logging tools for 2.1 and above?
If shouldn't exception handle, why is it not recommended to at least use the below?
try {body-code} catch (exception-classname variable-name) {handler-code}

AsyncTask blocks exceptions? Please see the below code. My "getOffersStatus" function catches certain exceptions and show them in a AlertDialog. But instead of getting my custom exceptions message I get default error dialog "The application ... has stopped unexpectdly. Please try again".

I'm trying to run this piece of code inside my onCreate method as an initial test into writing private data for my app to use. This code is straight out of the Android SDK development guide located here (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#filesInternal)
CODE:................
However, this code give me errors for the 3 lines of code at the bottom. The error is an unhanded exception. The suggested quick fix is do to the following:
CODE:..........
But after doing that I get an error for the bottom two lines which states that fos may not be uninitialized. How can I fix this code? It's kind of annoying that the Android SDK gives you an example that doesn't even work.
I can't say I'm an expert at exception handling either.

I'm trying to catch a login exception thrown by the class that readerAccount belongs to in the code below.
CODE:......................
However, the only part of the catch statement that happens is is the Log.w() function. I was under the impression that during a catch statement, you have the opportunity to recover from errors, but the program blacks out the screen altogether and the dialog is not displayed, nor is the Toast.

I am using AsyncTask in my application.
The problem is that when server is down the AsyncTask throws an Interrupted exception. How to track that whether server is down or not.
CODE:.........
This same problem also occurs when the handset is kept idle for some time then keyguard gets lock and I suppose that WI-FI also gets disabled. So, when I enable the keyguard and if my application is in foreground then it gives the same exception. What should I do in order to remove this exception?

This is the sequence part of this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3674441/combining-2-images-overlayed
so the problem is: if the image size is too big - it'll got an exception (out of memory exception)
what i want is, to handle even if the handset got the lower spec hardware, it doesn't go to that exception (but it'll take a longer time to process the image) is it possible to do that?
The code snippet is like this:
CODE:......
And that block of code is inside the async task.

I have class A in which I have a method openfileConnec().
It was written like the below:
CODE:...............
Now I come to class B where I will call this method like the below:
CODE:.............
I was asked a question in an interview as follows:
Why does the method have a throws Exception in its declaration? Is it that on of the methods called in the implementation throws the base class exception? Also If we get a exception during calling the method (fileConnect( )) control goes to catch block. After executing catch where should the control go, what should be sent to base case?

I have written my own Exception (MyException) and implemented Logging and showing Error Messages in Form of Toasts. Here is the shortform of it...
CODE:............
Everything was fine until I now implemented Threads where Exceptions are being thrown and caught.
You probably already have seen, that I played with the Looper Class, but honestly I don't know how to make it work. Is that the right approach? You also can see that I already store a reference of the ApplicationContext in my Controller. Shall I do it with the ActivityContext as well and than make the Toast from this ActivityContext? (But I heard that this is not a good practice in terms of performance)
Update
Is this the way I should go, when an Exception is being caught in a Thread in an Activ ity?
CODE:...........................

I know how to use handlers to update UI elements such as progress bars toasts etc. The problem I am having is when the context goes away such as the user pressing the back button or the Activity finishing for some reason. This causes my application to crash often. I tried using
getApplicationContext()
(Thinking that this would be available throughout my entire application) but this did not work, ever - instead my application crashed! I put try catch blocks around all UI update code, this works but is it necessary? What is the bast way to handle this?

I want to know if it is possible to support multiple profiles within Android? To explain my question better, can we have two or more applications, which uses a Data Call, operating simultaneously in Android? For e.g. is it possible to have one IM, one e-mail application and one SNS(like Facebook) operating simultaneously in Android phones? If yes, I want to know how this is being handled within the Android Stack code. Since the platform code is open source, any suitable reference to any portion of the code handling this behavior would be perfect.

We know that it's very convenient to use TraceView in Android java code to check the runtime of different chunks of code. Now I develop my app with NDK and I want to check the runtime of some native functions, but I found nothing in TraceView guide if it's possible to use this tool. Because I noticed that one of my native methods spent too much time and I want to dig out the more detailed root cause. Is there anybody know if we can use TraceView in native code?

I am planning to write a video player application and I am planning to use the gstreamer on the native side. I am trying to use the SurfaceFlinger for the rendering part. For this I have written a test program to experiment on the rendering part. I am using the surface flinger wrapper from the project
http://gitorious.org/rowboat/external-gst-plugins-android
But the following ERROR occurs when we try to run the .apk.
CODE:.......
The I changed the permission for "android.permission.ACCESS_SURFACE_FLINGER" in frameworks/base/core/ res/AndroidManifest.xml to "dangerous" and recompiled. But got the same error.
Then I commented out the "checkCallingPermission" method in IServiceManager.cpp and recompiled. Then also i got the same error.

I set out to use SkCanvas and other native SKIA classes but I could not find any sample code. After a week's of search and diving deep into Android source, I got it working. Below in my blog, I have detailed, how to use SimpleJNI native sample, to get native canvas going. If you find it useful or I did something wrong let me know http://matthiyosi.blogspot.com/2009/10/using-skia-in-android-native-c...

I have some piece of code which uses JNI. I can debug code wrote in Java directly in Eclipse (using ADT). I even have a script, which help me debug native code with gdb. However this is not very comfortable way for doing this.Is it possible to configure Eclipse to use gdb (I guess gdbserver) for debbuging android native applications? Do you know where I could find any description of this?

We want to migrate a huge complex native program to Android system ,running it as a background service accepting command sent from Java Program using JNI along with IPC. However, the Android NDK state following words:
Please note that the NDK does not enable you to develop native-only applications. Android's primary runtime remains the Dalvik virtual machine.
Does that mean we have no way to run an standalone native-only application on Android as a background service? The native code can only exist in the form of library that will be loaded to the virtual machine through JNI?

I am creating an Android application which uses the JMF (SIP, RTP, JAIN). So i downloaded the JMF source code for some adhoc change to my application. The basic questions 1. How will it behave the "native files - C/C++/header" in JMF source files(downloaded)? because android is based on java right now. 2. Is there any complete different way to porting/doing the SIP, RTP working in android? Is there any link from sun.com(this) site for JMF source code?Any suggestion and comment about this?

How I can add headers to my native c file.
So here's the details.
I was able to setup my android project to call a native function from a .so file. And actually I need to add box2d to my project, but I when I include the header files, it won't make. So basically my problem is how do I tell the make file to include a whole folder with header and cpp files.
I tried adding the path directly to the include statement just for the sake of testing it. The error goes away, but new errors come out.

When I debug android app, if I work with Java, I can use Log.d("TAG", "xxxx", new Throwable()) to print backtrace of Java code. This is really handy for me to find bugs. But when I work with native library (e.g. libwebcore.so), there seems no way to print backtrace in runtime. The only way to debug native code is use gdbserver.
I have a question: Is there any way to print backtrace in C/C++?

Try send permissions in manifest <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WRITE_SMS"/> <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.READ_SMS"/> but this doesn't help.

I am trying to figure out what is the best way to debug a mix of Java and native code? Please notice, that I am NOT trying to develop a native app. The app will be written entirely in Java, using Android SDK. However, I noticed that some pieces of the SDK use native methods (e.g. AssetManager, WebKit, etc). I wonder which tools Google developers use if/when they need to debug a mix of Java and C/C++ code? Eclipse/gdb or there are commercial tools which make the debugging experience less painful?
