I was demo'ing a DroidX the other day and was blown away by the google map and voice ability. This will lead me to buying one of the android devices. Among other features. Query: Can GPS enabled apps, work on the phone, without cell serivce. IE can you pre-load say all the US map and POI info into the phone so it can be used as a standalone GPS in the middle of no where.

i have a problem i live on top of a hill and its unfortunately one of the few places i have ever been that i dont get good cell phone service. i was wondering it there is an app that uses your wifi for you cell phone service or to use wifi to increase my cell phone service

View 3 Replies View RelatedIf anyone is CURRENTLY with Sprint for their cell service in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area of Arizona, could you please tell me how your cell service is?I'm looking at moving to the HTC EVO in June when my contract is up with Verizon, but I'm pretty worried about the quality of Sprint's service. Most comments I have heard about Sprint have been either average or negative.On the contrary, my time with Verizon has really been stellar, few if any dropped calls, coverage EVERYWHERE it seems, and pretty decent customer service.Even though Sprints plans are $30 to $40 cheaper than Verizon, it won't matter if the service stinks and I can't make/receive calls or get on broadband.Just trying to weigh my options as the Incredible will be out as well, and may have to go with that one instead.

I would like an app that shows me on a map which cell tower my phone is using, signal strength, etc.
So I flashed CM6 tonight and everything seemed to go fine.However, I have NO SERVICE at all with it. I did revert back to previous stock ROM and had service just fine.Reinstalled CM6 thinking maybe that would fix it - no go.If it is not one thing, it is another anytime I try to install a new ROM.

I don't want to lug a laptop down there but want to stay connected to email. Do you know if there's any issue using WiFi without cell service?I don't have a desire to be using the cell phone service while I'm there; email will be enough.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFor the past couple weeks my phone has been acting very strange and has been getting pretty poor recpetion. I run BB.4 and P3Droid 1.0ghz and 3e baseband. I have tried .41 & .43 and did not get any better reception. Basically the issue is i get 3g for a while and all of a sudden i get 1x where i should have full 3g. If i shut my phone off and turn back on I then get 3g service back. I ultimately noticed it while in Chicago and i had terrible service when everyone else had great service. In Chi i went through all the basebands with no luck. Yesterday I restored back to rooted 2.1 by Pete and i still had a issue. So what i am looking for is there any settings i should look for that maybe off. I doubt its a common issue and i want to look at everything before calling to get it swapped out for a like new droid.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Motorola Triumph and last night I got a notification that my memory was almost full so I went to delete some apps. The ones I deleted were QuickMark, FatBooth, Sports Wallpapers (from wallpaperbase.cc inc), The Walking Dead Theme (from STYLISH THEMES BY DESIGNEM), and Thermometer (from BORCE TRAJKOVSKI). I think it messed up after deleting The Walking Dead one. Anyway now my phone can't make/receive calls, send/receive texts, or do any data. I have been at 0 bars since deleting those. I called Virgin Mobile and they couldn't solve the problem so they are sending me a new phone. how can I prevent this from happening again in the future?

I finally bought a cable. I plugged it in to my phone and the TV. The tv automatically switched to "480p" and goes black (like it is about to do something). But it stays black. For anything.
Also, someone told me that there should be a little "HDMI" icon in the stop left of the phone when it is plugged in. I don't have this on my phone. Nothing happens on my phone at all. I have 3 HDMI inputs on my tv. It's a viewsonic, if that matters.
Can one buy a used device with no phone service and use it for testing apps?Second question: can wifi be used on such a phone, to connect to the internet?

My app which was working on 2.1 and earlier version fails to run properly in 2.2. It relies on the location but I do not get any error message. However under DDMS /logCat, I see a message saying: Error message while getting the location address: Reason: this service is not available. This is coming more as an information message rather than an exception or error. The process that is printing it out is System.out. Note that I did everything possible ( I can think of) to upgrade the app to run in android 2.2. The API version was changed to 8.
The manifest file contains all the following:-

How does Android provide support for traditional TCP or UDP sockets? Is there a wireless IP protocol using just the cell phone? If so, how does this work? Or, do I need an 802.11 chipset in the handset (assuming this isn't standard)?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I ever figure out how to root my cellularsouth hero, can i or should I download and install 2.1 when we finally get it from my carrier? Will it just over write what I have on there or will it need to be flashed back to stock? There really is no way to back up the OS from what I can tell. When i jailbroke my iphone an upgrade just put it back to factory default with the upgrade. I don't think it works like that with Android right? Because of not baing able to back up the phone before hand i worry about bricking it.
I am also wondering since there is so much trouble rooting the cellularsouth version of the hero, if it is even worth it. By the time i or someone else figures it out 2.1 will be out and then it may be a long time to get that rooted too. Sometimes I wish this company I am with was not cdma. cdma seems to have the most trouble getting rooted. But we do get great signal and service, but thats about all with this company.

Does this just mean I am in a bad cell zone? This is my reading at home and it is the top battery usage on the chart, followed by wifi at 24% (on because I am home), and phone idle at 23%.

Of the apps I've downloaded, only a few of them have worked. Of those few that work, some don't work right. Has anyone had problems with these apps crashing on them, or just not working correctly?
- Nice Battery (see description at bottom of: My Ultimate CLIQ settings (so far))
- WeatherBug (kept showing the wrong location, crashed when trying to change location)
- Snake - doesn't work just says its "paused"
- RingDroid - crashes when I select the "Facebook Pop" button
- Layar - screen is rotated 90 degrees at all times
There have been others, but usually I just uninstall them right after discovering it doesn't work right.
Is it possible to set it up so I can send a text from my computer using my cell phone # and not my google voice # ?

Once it has finished doing it's work I would like the service to stopSelf(), how can I get the service to determine when it is no longer needed (ie, there are no more Threads executing) so that it can shut itself down automatically?
