Android :: How Does Market Secure My Application Against Distribution?
Mar 23, 2010
I've only distributed a few apps by sending .apk files around.I was wondering how Android Market prevents users from distributing a paid application to other people.

We have an app that needs to be distributed to a large but limited audience. We are doing this through our own web site. Now that AT&T will not allow any downloads to the Flip except through the Android market, we need to have the capability to have a limited distribution on the Market. Can this be done on the Android market? Will the Android market include this in the future?

A customer asked me to create an android application for their internal use. Essentially it would some sort of mobile terminal for a special chemistry database. It doesn't make any sense, to distribute this application via "Android Market" since it is only useful for special users and payment wont be done per installation but for the whole contract. Is there any other way to distribute android apps besides the market? Maybe by putting them on a web page? Any hints appreciated since i couldn't find anything on the web.

I'm sorry I know this is slightly off-topic, but since there is no group about the market... When I'm logging in to the Market console, I'm asked to agree with the "updated Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement".Is there any info/announcement anywhere highlighting and explaining the differences with the previous agreement?

I have been wondering over the last few days since getting an Android phone and trying to configure it to make it at least as productive as my previous smartphone. How secure is the information in a world where we put a large amount of personal info behind google-id and password? This id and pwd is plugged into the phone for functionality. We browse the Android Market for necessary apps provided by complete strangers and click Install. We click OK when caution is raised, with unknowing consequences and taking complete responsibility for the installation. Am I justified in being paranoid with Android model of doing things?
Please read the thread "ActiveSync for Android, Moment?" to understand better why I raise this question.

Should this app always stay open? Should I exclude it from the list of apps that close when I clear the task manager? I'm guessing it will take up virtually no memory unless someone tampers with the phone?

In one android application, I created a database file in data/data/com.rams/databases/dbfilename.
If I created a second application with the same package name (com.rams) and I access the database file created with my first application, the second application is able to access the database contents.
How can I secure the database file created with my first application?

I need to develop an application that will check whether the phone is in roaming. If it's in roaming then the application should block internet for all applications except several from white list. In non-roaming mode it should allow all requests. There should be no way for user to kill or suspend the application or turn internet on.
I'm not familiar with android much so I really don't know whether it possible to implement without modification of OS. Is there any way to do this?

Can anyone tell me how to setup a google apps (no gmail) account on a Droid X? I set it up on my Fascinate easily. I need to set SSL for outgoing, and TLS for outgoing. The Droid X only gives me the option of "use secure connection". The thing is, I got it to work as a regular email account last night, but then it stopped working. We have one ATT account through yahoo, and the google apps account from our private website. I tried setting it up as a gmail account since the settings are the same, but get the error "cannot establish a reliable data connection to the server."

I work at the UPS sprint distribution building in Louisville, KY. I gather some of the items in an order to get ready for shipping, and there have been 0 orders seen by me (out of thousands) for either the Sprint Samsung Epic 4G and the HTC Evo 4G? Both of the phones are in stock, and there are thousands of them. I do both Sprint retail stores and personal orders

Is there a way to code-sign (to allow it to open only on a device with specific ID) your Android app when using ad-hoc distribution (sending app to testers or clients as a subcontractor)?I know I can share apk file pretty easily, but what if I don't want other people to redistribute the app before it is ready? I don't want testers to be able to distribute not finished and buggy version of my app for example. Or I would like to show my client the final version of the app, but not allow them to distribute it until the payment is made.

First I will explain my situation. Then, I would greatly appreciate constructive dialog on how other developers feel similar situations should be managed.I wrote a simple app in November.I offered it for free on the Market for two reasons. One, Google hadn't implemented paid apps yet, so I had no choice. Two, by my own admission, v1.0 was too simple too garner payment. However, in the app's documentation, I requested donations toward future development.Out of thousands of installs, I received nothing. This week I finished a considerably fancier version of the program. Given hundreds of hours of unpaid development, I decided to charge a few bucks for the new version.I split the app into lite and pro versions. The lite version has all the new fancy features enabled but is limited in how large a document can be created (spread sheet, I limited the number of rows/cols, admittedly unlimited in the earlier version). The pro version went to Market as a new app, the lite version on top of the old app to retain the long feedback history.
Since the Market provides no way to downgrade, I put the old unlimited version on my website and put directions in the new lite version in multiple places explaining how to revert to the old version. Thus, any user dissatisfied with the rol/col limit could restore the EXACT functionality they had before upgrading to the lite version.Incidentally, the 325 character blurb allotted on the Market was insufficient to list the new features and the lite version's limitation and the caveat that the lite version could be reverted through my website.I simply could not communicate these facts to users to help them decide whether to upgrade or what to expect after upgrading.
The complaints about the new lite version have been diverse. Most pertinent to this discussion are complaints that the lite version now limits the rows/cols where the previous version didn't.I find such complaints unjustifiable since I explicitly permit reversion.I literally don't see what they have to complain about. Another irksome genre of complaints is that the program is still too simple to ask any money for at all. I am infuriated. It costs less than an ice cream cone. So, as discussion, how would other developers handle this situation: initial app is simple so offered for free, later version is complex so split into lite/pro. You don't want to limit the lite version by not showing the new fancy features, so the limitation must be something else, a time limit, a forced delay splash screen, something.I chose limited rows/cols on a spreadsheet app, but also permitted reversion to the old unlimited version.

I am trying to make an app for the Android that does RMD calculations. The program, however, keeps giving 0.0.
I think that my problem lies in this code:
CODE:......................
I tried using .equals(), but it complained that I was trying to dereference the long value. Also, I am aware that java.util.Date is deprecated, but I don't want to try the other classes. From my first Android app, I figured out the "==" does not work, but I am not sure what to do here.
I have verified that the input for a balance and the birthdate values were accepted, so that is how I limited it to this particular class.

When our systems go down here at work (email) our phones stop working for email communication, and I have staff that freak out when this happens. My CFO would like me to send a TEXT to all our staff (Teams) that are in the field to let them know our Internet is down. Now all these Teams have their phone numbers in our Global Address book of Exchange. But I would like to be able to access it easily on my phone as selecting a group and it sends everyone in that group a text.Been working on this for the last 2 hours and can't find a way to do this.I also tried adding a separate group for contacts in Outlook 2010 for Exchange, and it won't show up on my EVO either.

I am creating an application that checks the installation of a package and then launches the market-place with its id.
When I try to launch market place with id of an application say com.mybrowser.android by throwing an intent android.intent.action.VIEW with url: market://details?id=com.mybrowser.android, the market place application does launches but crashes after launch.
Note: the application com.mybrowser.android doesn't exists in the market-place.
MyApplication is my application.
CODE:..........
However, when I try to launch the market place for a package that exists in the market place say com.opera.mini.android, everything works. Log for this case:

I hope to figure out the direct URL link to my application on the market like http://market:blahblah
I was able to find the application ID previously by going to the UI interface to upload application, and looking at the URL link that can edit the app.
However, this method doesn't seem to work any more because the now the edit URL link contains only the package name and not the app ID.
Any idea how to get the application ID?

Wasn't there mention back during the Google conference of a Android media center type of application for the PC. Hate to think of the Itunes but yes, an itunes like application but for Android. Organize our music and other programs on the computer and sync it up. Make searching for applications easier and we can back up our downloaded ups on the pc.
Its great to use our phones as flash drives with plug and go but is there something already on the market or elsewhere that can do what I've mentioned?

I am curious about the procedure for updating an app that was acquired off the market. Do you simply install over your existing app? And if so, what happens to your existing data?Is there a way to tie your installed apps to the market, so it can automatically check for updates? Any information is appreciated.

Something really strange happened today and I could really use some help figuring it out. I believe its related to Google's SSO infrastructure, and I don't really know how to contact Google to get my application rescued.
I have a google apps account I used to create the application, its claytantor at sightlyinc dot com not a f...@gmail.com account but its a Google Apps account, so I used it to upload and distribute my application. Today when I was using blogger my account said "do you want to use claytantor at sightlyinc dot com or claytantor at sightlyinc dot com for this account?" what kind of choice is that they are both the same? Well my guess is that somehow I chose the one that locks me out of my Android Market account because when I went to try to upload a new version of my app it thinks I don't have an Android Market account.
Paying the extra 20 bucks wouldn't bug me but there is a version of my software out there that I cant access or manage now, and that *really* bothers me. If I create a new account I will have two versions of mys software floating around the new one and the old one that has been stranded! I cant live with that.

This has come up before, but I'm still not clear. I published my first app last night. It sunk like a stone. I want to change its name. I don't want to force the few people who have downloaded it to get an update. It seems to me that if I:
1. Change the android: label in the manifest to be the new name, and
2. Resubmit it with the same version number
Then the name in the market should change but not force an update. Is this correct?

Today, I placed our new app onto the market store. It can be found by most mobile phones - unfortunately, it cannot be detected by one specific model which is used by one of our customers. It is the Vodafone 845, with a small screen (240x320p) and low density (120 dpi). It's running with Android 2.1, updated version (i.e. SDK 7), and has all the necessary hardware (GPS, cam, and internet access), but, however, doesn't detect the app in the market. I have already tried anyDensity="true". The app is free, not copy protected, and open to all countries. I have the following settings in the manifest:
xmlns:android="xxx"
package="xxx"
android:versionCode="10"
android:versionName="1">
<supports-screens
android:largeScreens="true"
android:normalScreens="true"
android:smallScreens="true".............

I woke up this morning to 2 new 1-star rating on my app, which made it 3 total. There were no comments and no purchase cancellations in the last couple of days, so I said to myself WTF, 2 people actually kept the app and gave it a one star? I thought it might be a competitor. But I just looked again and the 2 new 1-stars have disappeared. What is going on with the market?
