Android :: GSM 4G Vs CDMA?
May 30, 2010
Although the title has iPhone 4G and EVO 4G, it's more about the different networks and how they are approaching giving more bandwidth to their users. Writer indicates that CDMA has maxed out it's data speeds, hence the need for 4G, but that GSM has not. Anyway, interesting take on 4G. 4G Apple iPhone, Sprint EVO: Worth The Hype?

How can I find the IP address of the an HTC incredible connected to Verizon's network? My other question - do I have to make any changes to my App to run it on a cellular network? Till now the App was running on a Nexus One connected to a local Wi-Fi network.

Is there a way to determine location via CellID on a CDMA network? I can get a network ID, base station ID, and system ID programatically, but is there an api somewhere to convert these to lat, long coordinates? The CdmaCellLocation.getBaseStationLatitude() and CdmaCellLocation.getBaseStationLongitude() methods return some junk number. Can I convert the cdma dating I'm getting to CID and LAC somehow?
I'm getting a system ID of 40, a network ID of 3, and a base station ID of 4672, and that appears to be exactly worthless.

I would like to know whether Android handsets support CDMA network also. Are there any handset which currently supports CDMA or every handset has support for that. Actually I want to retrieve the location information such as Cellid, LAC, MCC, MNC. But if the network is of CDMA type then will there be any difference in the API. Since API for fetching cellid is GsmCellLocation. This class will give the cellid and lac of the current network.
If in some cases the network is of CDMA type then how would location information be fetched in that.. Can we use TelephonyManager class methods for any kind of device? In this class there is no method which gives the LAC of the current network.

Because there is a new project that wants me to porting android to cdma phones, before that, we have made the gsm version as a product, but I am not sure that if GOOGLE has updated a different version suitable for CDMA? If it has, I have to update my code...especially the RIL module..

If I ever figure out how to root my cellularsouth hero, can i or should I download and install 2.1 when we finally get it from my carrier? Will it just over write what I have on there or will it need to be flashed back to stock? There really is no way to back up the OS from what I can tell. When i jailbroke my iphone an upgrade just put it back to factory default with the upgrade. I don't think it works like that with Android right? Because of not baing able to back up the phone before hand i worry about bricking it.
I am also wondering since there is so much trouble rooting the cellularsouth version of the hero, if it is even worth it. By the time i or someone else figures it out 2.1 will be out and then it may be a long time to get that rooted too. Sometimes I wish this company I am with was not cdma. cdma seems to have the most trouble getting rooted. But we do get great signal and service, but thats about all with this company.

If someone finds or steals the phone, can the pattern lock be bypassed on a CDMA phone (not sure if GSM phones are vulnerable to SIM replacement as a bypass)? If not, perhaps that's pretty good security, so long as you're careful not to let others see your unlock pattern and you wipe the screen to remove your finger trail. Of course that still leaves the sd card unprotected, but if keep everything important in your dropbox, you can delete it from there, and probably do so before the person decides to pull the card out.

How does one determine the home carrier on a CDMA phone? By home carrier I mean the carrier that the phone's owner has a contract with, not the owner of the cell site that the phone is communicating with. These are different when the phone is roaming. On a GSM phone I can get the home carrier from the IMSI recorded on the SIM, but this does not work on a CDMA phone. CDMA has a similar identifier called home system ID. Is there a way to query the home system ID? If that is not possible, how do I determine the home carrier? On Windows Mobile I am forced to search the registry looking for strings like 'Verizon' and 'Sprint'. Is there a similar klooge on Android?

As we call know, our Hero (at the moment at least) runs Android 1.5. Also, it WILL be getting Eclair, which from what I've heard has native CDMA support? What, doest that mean 1.5 did not have CMDA support?
What can we expect from an OS that has native CDMA support? Does it have anything to do with the phone's software performance? I'm just a little confused on this, and if someone couldnt shed some light on it that would be very nice...

My application makes use of cell tower info, specifically the CID for GSM. I'm able to test this on my G1, but I don't have access to a Droid phone to test the same functionality, baseStationId, for CDMA. How can I test this in the emulator so that I can support Droid phones?

I don't have my Evo yet so I can't and won't say this works 100% but from what I've read and what people have told me this seems to fix the problem so you won't have to do the GSM/CDMA trick anymore. Many have told me that you have to manually update this by going into -> Menu > Settings > System Updates > Update PRL. Let me know how it works out for you.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question. But I'm a hopeless hoper. Is there *any* way to force the epic into 2g mode even if 3g is available? can't find anything, seems like Android and CDMA don't play that nice together.
