Motorola Droid :: CDMA Vs GSM?
Oct 22, 2009
I read that the droid will be on verizon, which is a CDMA network, but i also read that it will support GSM radios. does that mean it will have a SIM card slot? and does that mean it could be unlocked to work on tmobile?

Alright, so I recently purchased the droid and I am looking to put in on Boost CDMA for their unlimited plan.I can pull the PRL off of a boost phone that I am using right now (I think) and have an esn of an old boost phone can I can use for a switch so it is recognized in the database. I own both phones so I don't see any issue with this.My question is; is rooting the phone necessary for this to work. I would think so, but I am not sure. I have seen people flash the droid over to cricket, virgin, page plus, metro pcs, so why not boost mobile?I am just looking for some feedback from people more knowledgeable than me. This is my first android phone, so I am quite ignorant in all things android. I flashed an HTC TP2 over to boost, so I am hoping I can do the same with the droid.

I'm not familiar at all with the differences in the networks in terms of CDMA, GSM, etc. I just read a news brief about the DROID possibly going to ATT at some point and the person writing it said something to the effect of "for those not wanting to be tied to the verizon's CDMA network." I thought verizon had the best network. I realize that in the past Verizon has crippled phones, but not sure if that has anything to do with what he was referring to, doesn't sound like he was talking about that.

Looks like Juice Defender is working w/rooted CDMA phones again, at least with CM 5.0.7.1...the install process is kind of cool, it does testing during the install to validate that it can work, and even automatically installed some sort of "helper" for the CM ROM I'm running. See thread here. Battery Saving Techniques - Theories in Test - CyanogenMod Forum And beta site for download here..JuiceDefender | Google Groups

I would like to know whether Android handsets support CDMA network also. Are there any handset which currently supports CDMA or every handset has support for that. Actually I want to retrieve the location information such as Cellid, LAC, MCC, MNC. But if the network is of CDMA type then will there be any difference in the API. Since API for fetching cellid is GsmCellLocation. This class will give the cellid and lac of the current network.
If in some cases the network is of CDMA type then how would location information be fetched in that.. Can we use TelephonyManager class methods for any kind of device? In this class there is no method which gives the LAC of the current network.

Because there is a new project that wants me to porting android to cdma phones, before that, we have made the gsm version as a product, but I am not sure that if GOOGLE has updated a different version suitable for CDMA? If it has, I have to update my code...especially the RIL module..

A while ago I found a source of apk files for my Droid Razr Maxx and copied them over at once to my droid. I believe two files became corrupted.
When turning on the My Verizon Mobile Application, or when the screen is on and I get a text message I get an error:
Unfortunately, Verizon SSO Engine has stopped.
Also, after the ICS update, my phone has been very sluggish and using a lot more ram. Any reliable zip file of the stock apk files for Verizon Droid Razr/Maxx?

Ok so i have a Razr Xt912, i have it rooted and running safestrap. Ive been looking around since ive seen awhile back on the portal it can be used with GSM carriers. But the more i look into it the more convoluted it gets. So is it really possible to get it to work on GSM like AT&T and T-Mobile?

Although the title has iPhone 4G and EVO 4G, it's more about the different networks and how they are approaching giving more bandwidth to their users. Writer indicates that CDMA has maxed out it's data speeds, hence the need for 4G, but that GSM has not. Anyway, interesting take on 4G. 4G Apple iPhone, Sprint EVO: Worth The Hype?

I don't have my Evo yet so I can't and won't say this works 100% but from what I've read and what people have told me this seems to fix the problem so you won't have to do the GSM/CDMA trick anymore. Many have told me that you have to manually update this by going into -> Menu > Settings > System Updates > Update PRL. Let me know how it works out for you.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question. But I'm a hopeless hoper. Is there *any* way to force the epic into 2g mode even if 3g is available? can't find anything, seems like Android and CDMA don't play that nice together.

A friend of mine is a member of the EVO Facebook group and sent me to a link which reads as follows:
"For those of you having battery issues I found a way to Dramatically improve the battery life.
First things first, go into Settings> About Phone> Battery> Battery Use> Cell Standby. Assuming your phone has been on, or off the charger for ~10 minutes, it should show Time Without Signal at around 50%. Next thing, press Home and bring up the dialer. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Do not press "Call"). After a second, it should bring up the "Testing" menu.
Go into Phone Information, press MENU, and tap "select radio band." You should experience a Force Close, don't panic, this was supposed to happen. Scrolling down shows that the preferred network type is GSM auto (prl). What this means is that even though you are connected to a CDMA network, your phone is trying to find a GSM network, preventing the radio from sleeping, and causing excessive battery drain. Remedy this by tapping GSM auto (prl) and changing it to CDMA auto (prl).
Now your done, your TWS should drop dramatically, and you should experience much better battery life!
Note: You need to do this every time you reboot."
I've changed it on my phone just now and the service still works as normal. I guess we'll see if the battery life increases. If this works and with overclock widget I should be getting some crazy battery life now!

Based on this thread in another forum (2.1 users what is your Time without a signal %" [Archive] - xda-developers) I did both the Airplane trick and the following:
The problem is a bug in a lot of 2.1 roms out there now.
There is a fix:
1) Go to dialer, put in *#*#4636#*#*
2) Press Phone Information
3) Press Menu, and pick Select Radio Band (ITS NORMAL TO GET A FORCE CLOSE)
4) Go down and change GSM Auto(PRL) to CDMA Auto (PRL)
Both made my Juice Plotter (JD) increase in battery time left.

I've been trying to port a rom ovef to my cdma Xperia play from a gsm Xperia play I cannot find what files need replaced to get service for my cdma port attempt I've swapped out my baseband files the rild file I've switched out the (here's the weird part) baseband files and both framework-res.apk and framework. Jar I get the full working service but I have to litereally tear apart the port rom and basically make it a stock rom so its not really a port rom if I have nothing from the port rom. I'm confused and cant seem to get service or any answer on the files needed to swap I knobthe build.prop is built correctly

Would it make sense to save battery to drop to 3G(CDMA) from 4G(LTE) when on a reasonable strong wifi connection?
If it does, is there an app or toggle that can make that happen automatically?
