Android :: Facebook App - Data Consumption
Oct 22, 2009
I like the new Facebook app. However, it is currently consuming 12.76 MB (this is the data amount) of valuable space on my G1. Unlike many other apps, there is not a Clear Data or Clear Cache button available to recover this space. Anyone else experiencing this? I have deleted apps I seldom use and find it increasingly difficult to keep my G1 from slowing down due to free space 20 MB and lower. I am thinking of deleting the app and reinstalling.

My HTC Hero uses about 1 Mb per day, while no applications seem to require data. Automatically popping mail has been disabled, and also other data consuming apps aren't running. I switched off cell (3G) so it consumes the data via WiFi. If I switch on 3G, it would also consume via 3G. So, by not using any apps, the Hero seems to consume 1 Mb per day. How come?

This morning when I logged into Facebook on my work computer it told me there had been a login from the Netherlands and asked if this was known to me. I said no so I had to change my password. So I went to my HTC Desire and updated the Faceboom account details with my new password and it sync'd fine. The FriendStream shows my facebook newsfeed but when I go into the Facebook app itself it shows no data and tells me there is a problem. Nowhere in there do I see a separate account setting feature so I assume it takes the account info from the Droid Settings. How can I get the Facebook app to pull my facebook data?

Is there any way to access a Facebook non-user page (ex: Musician, Product, etc) through an API through Android? I saw that there is a Facebook Android SDK but I haven't been able to figure out if this can be done.

My question is basically "can anyone recommend an application that will tell me which applications are draining my battery". I've read about task killers and usage and turning stuff on and off, I'm not worried about that, and I don't need to know why (i.e Google Earth uses X units per hour.

How can one track memory consumption in Android? The Android "Heap" view in Eclipse and java.lang.Runtime methods seem failing for my purpose. I tried to figure out how much memory my app consumes in order to make decisions for future directions. Most of the memory goes into Bitmap objects. Just to test memory consumption I created huge bitmaps in a Loop and logged the java.lang.Runtime memory values: created bitmap (610k free, 2371k total, 16384k max) created bitmap (615k free, 2371k total, 16384k max) created bitmap (615k free, 2371k total, 16384k max) created bitmap (615k free, 2371k total, 16384k max)
Nothing seems to hapen, but on the fifth Bitmap: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget at android.graphics.Bitmap.nativeCreate(Native Method) at android.graphics.Bitmap.createBitmap(Bitmap.java:343) at de.greenrobot.colorball.GameView.init(GameView.java:86)
This seems confusing at first. Is java.lang.Runtime the right place to check application memory stats in Android at all? Are Bitmaps allocated outside the app's heap? How can I track it?

does SQLite have any big impact on power consumption? I am just thinking about storing data in a List or Map or in a database. I have a lot of inserts and queries, several a second.

I'm the developer of PowerTutor, a power profiling tool for the system. This tool profiles the system power consumption and decomposes power consumption on hardware components (e.g. LCD, Wi-Fi, CPU and etc.). It also assigns power consumption to individual application as the application is running alone in the system. In this way, it could potentially help developers to profile the app and detect energy inefficiency usage behavior in the application.
More details could be found at http://powertutor.org.
Note that PowerTutor is free to download and no advertisement is embedded. I'm posting this here to so that the Android community can be aware of it. Any one who cares about power consumption of their applications will find it useful.

Facebook app will not work over mobile data on my GS3. It works fine over WiFi, but on mobile data its slow. I flashed the 4.1.2 leak i wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Just wondering How the FM Radio in desire works. Is it like in other phones where you have to use the headset for the radio to work? And another question to those that might have tried, how long would the battery last when using FM radio?

find out which app is draining my battery and if it's really necessary. couldn't find any information on the SDK pages. My Phone seems to be very often Awake while in standby. I can't understand why it has to wake up that often. Am I right, that this "Awake" means, that the cpu is running (not in sleep mode)?
Is there any way to log which software is waking the device up?

I've used the search and read all thread that include "data" in the post's title. Lots of it was helpful, yet I have a few questions. This morning as a test to see how much data my phone uses just for syncing and any kind of background data, I turned on the network data and syncing.
after 20 mins it was up to 1.5mb (according to my data counter widget). I downloaded the Spare Parts app which shows me what instances use how much data; very useful. The 1.5mb I'm stating here already exclude RSS updates and a few web pages I loaded this morning. This 1.5mb is ONLY the syncing stuff. So my question is: Why and how can it be so much data? I use gmail and google calendar and contacts, and have some 400+ friends of Facebook (FB). Calendar and FB were already synced yesterday before I went to bed. How can another sync use so much data? It wasn't my email (Gmail) as there weren't many this morning.
The calendar sync apprently took up 468kb, and a process called "UID 10027" which i presume is FB? used 555kb. I'm really puzzled by these numbers. as google sync happens frequently throughout the day unless I activate it, usually i get up to 15mb a day without actually doing much (i.e. no browsing, no RSS feeds updates, no streaming). Why is the FB and Google sync taking up so much data? I downloaded FB for android, which replaced the FB for HTC application (so now I have inbox, and not the stupid "Take a Picture" in the app thank god) which doesn't even use the sync from the account settings but has its own update cycle which I had turned to 'manual'. Ialready switched off the "use WiFi for location" because I heard google maps otherwise constantly searches in the background

I had to clear my contact data the other day from settings/applications/manage applications/contacts storage to cure a google mail account sync problem. It worked and the phone now syncs fine. But, I now have duplicates of all facebook events in all my calendars. Can I safely delete the data in settings/applications/manage applications/Facebook for HTC Sense? do you think if I did that that it would sort the problem? Would this cause issues with my contacts, as some are linked to Facebook friends, or would this sort its self out when it re-synced?

I am building and designing a (mostly) read-only interface to some data. I'll be uing ASP.NET MVC to build a psudo-restful API. I'm wondering if anyone can provide some resources for building full-client applications for various mobile platforms, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, etc. I'm thinking that serving up XML data is going to be the most simple and universal, but parsing XML in objective-C for example doesn't sound like fun to me, but maybe there are some good libaries out there to help ease this task?
In other words, what formt will be the quickest to implement on the client side? Are there any JSON parsrs for iPhone or Android? I know there are .NET JSON parsers, but not sure about other platforms -- is ther another format that might better? Or should I stick with pure XML and deal with it on each platform differently?

First, these screen shots were taken after the battery had been fully charged 2 hours prior. I pulled it off right after the light turned green, so that isn't the issue. Also, I've already done the charge, turn off, charge, turn on, etc. thing. My light turned green almost instantly the first time I turned it off and plugged it back in. The screen was on 18.5% of the time during this stretch, so that's pretty heavy usage. But why would the system have been running 53.3% of the time? I wouldn't think that number would/should be much higher than the screen-on time.

I was trying to search and use google with no luck (from my Hero) so I am sorry if this is a old question. I am currently using a HTC Hero (Sprint) and am purchasing a HTC Evo next week and I was wondering if the battery consumption is similar or a lot worse / better etc. with my Hero I have like gps, wifi, bluetooth off and all the other tricks? I don't mind having all that disabled it never bother me as I really never use twitter, facebook and the gmail app works just fine for me. With my Hero I can get through the day always with all that disabled so any insight if the Evo is similar would be appreciated! Oh and I am not a former blackberry user that expects my phone to last six days on a charge.

I went on vacation last week and did a comparison between my X and my wife's Incredible. We were on a cruise, so both phones stayed in airplane mode due to not needing a signal. With absolutely no use, not even turning on the screen, my battery went from 100% - 10% in 37 hours... Dumbfounded, I went to running app.s and stopped nearly everything. I tried again and only got 49 hours. In comparison, her Droid used 10% of her battery in 9 days! The X advertises 220 hours of standby....I am only 180 hours shy of this, something wrong or do they just lie? Remember, my numbers are no use at all, the battery manager only showed "phone idol" as battery consumption.

Basically i went from getting 15+ hours of battery life to getting 4 hours today and maybe 7 yesterday. This is 2 days in a row. Running baked snack 1.9 with not too many apps.. I had gone a few weeks being amazed by battery life. I don't think I've added any apps that would cause this.

My system was starting to get a little bit laggy (especially messages app), so I deleted all of my messages and a load of apps I no longer use. As well as my phone speeding up by leaps and bounds, my battery is getting about 3 hours additional life (minimum). Before, 15 minutes after taking my phone off charge it had lost a bar, but now.. I took my phone off charge at 7:15am and listened to music for 40 minutes on the way to work.. it's now 10:19am and I still haven't lost a bar!

As an experiment I set all my internet apps - backup assistant, gmail, people, calendar, news, weather, amazon, stocks, facebook, etc, etc, ETC, to not automatically update, sync, refresh or do anything on the internet without my say-so. I then turned off my phone, put a full charge on it and turned it back on again to reset the timer for Settings > About phone > Battery > Battery use. For the next 6 hours I made a few phone calls while I was not in range of any wifi; I used a few local (non-internet) apps like calculator and stopwatch and camera but I did NOT use any internet apps. At the end of that time "battery use" showed Wi-Fi at 30%, Cell standby at 28% and voice calls at 6%. So why is WiFi so high? Is that just from some "keep alive" or beacon or polling feature? Or is there some app or process I don't know about using the WiFi connection, and how do I tell?

I toggled the battery profile from "smart" to "performance" and than back to "smart" and it seems to be holding steady at the current battery level. I will know more as time goes on
