Android :: Exporting And Importing Contacts From Windows To Android
Sep 29, 2009
I have to move my existing contacts from HTC TyTn Windows 6 powered to HTC Hero on Android. Is there a way to export and import without going through google or any other cloud computing servers? I have PIMBackup running on HTC TyTn and that exports contacts in a CSV format. I have also located a new application (not tried it yet) will export them in XML format. Will this help with the importing? I am not able to find 1 application that will run on both the phones. I have loads of information on my contacts (from addresses to groups to different phone numbers) and I don't want to lose any of this information.

This tip comes in courtesy of Mark, who was kind enough to help out fellow Android addicts get their contact syncing issues sorted out. While it?s easiest to just use gmail to sync contacts and calendar, it?s certainly not required. Here?s how you can back up your contact list for easy retrieval anytime you need them. Open your contacts application Make sure All contacts are visible, unless you only want to back up certain groups.
Hit the menu button
Hit the Import/Export button
We can verify that this works on HTC Sense phones, as well as the new Galaxy S series phones. If you?re using something a bit more vanilla, you will have an option to do the same thing but using your SIM card (through SIM Manager in the contacts menu) instead of the microSD card. Lastly, if you?re using the latest CM6, you have the option to do both!

Barring any complications, I will be preordering the HTC Droid Incredible on Monday, April 19th, to be shipped to me on launch (April 29th). I currently have the Blackberry Storm 1. Has anyone heard of how to import the contacts from the Storm to the Incredible? Since I will be doing the activation once I get it shipped to me and I haven't messed with the Android OS or anything with the current HTC phones or whatnot, I am not sure what it takes to get the contacts from the Blackberry to other phones.

I'm primarily working on the Android SDK on windows, but would like to modify/tweak some functionality in the application framework.I have a separate ubuntu box where I downloaded the android source code, built it using "make" as well as "make sdk". I have a few questions in mind. Is it possible to import the binaries that I built on the ubuntu box into the android windows SDK? If so, what are the (proper) steps in doing so.For example, say I modified some functionality in the Activity.java file, then built it on ubuntu. I want to be able to make use of my modifications and continue my app development on my Windows SDK. Can I somehow import the framework binaries built from this step over to my windows SDK and continue my development from there? If so, what are the binaries I need and what are the steps to import them?

I have some questions concerning importing contacts to the device, which is extremely slow.
First of all, if you delete all your contacts, google sync will restore it very quickly. However, when my app is adding contacts to the device, it's very slow (a few contacts per second). Even if I add almost empty contacts (with name only), it is a time-consuming process.
If I turn google sync off, importing 5000 contacts can take 1-2 hours (on HTC Magic). When google sync is on it can take up to 24hours. And this happens despite the fact, that application for the whole time is in the foreground, device is connected to charger and screen is on. I checked the logcat to make sure my app is adding the contacts the whole time, and it is.
I tried different methods and different devices. The results differ of course, yet manually adding contacts is always significantly slower that google sync. Is there any way that I can speed up the process? So that importing 5000 contacts will take less than an hour.

I have my contacts in Outlook and Thunderbird and needed to get them onto my Acer tablet. After a LOT of messing about I downloaded E-Z Contacts from here
E-Z Contact Book - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download
and Contacts <-> Excel from here [URL] .....
Both free, if you already have Contacts <-> Excel get the latest version or you'll lose the addresses.
You can import into EZ directly from Outlook. With Thunderbird you have to export in CSV format and then import the CSV file into EZ. You have to manually match the fieldnames between EZ and the CSV file to make sure everything goes into the right place.
Once in EZ you export the data in Google CSV format and copy the file to the SD card of your device.
Next step is to use Contacts <-> Excel, just select "Import", > SD Card > Select the file from the list > Select the account you're importing into and then GO.
EZ can be used to sort your contacts into groups, edit contacts, get the map for your contact, email them, open their website and set up a Skype phone call.
I now use EZ all the time rather than Thunderbird & Outlook &c it means I can change my default email client without having to update contacts. I also store bookmarks in it so I can easily swap to another browser.

I'm new to this MotoBlur concept, but I like having an automatic contact backup.. I imported my contacts from the IPhone using their web site and it worked instantly. I also synced with the Gmail contacts and slowly I'm merging them. how the hell do I export the contacts to a new fresh CSV as I make changes on the phone? Does Motorola want me to use Motoblur forever? They don't have an export feature anywhere on their site.

My wife and I both bought new Android phones. I've set each of us up with a gmail account, and I was able to successfully import my contacts from iTunes (I had an iPod Touch). I've spent quite a bit of time in Gmail editing the contacts and adding photos, phone numbers, etc, and would like my wife to share these as well, as a starting point. So what I did was export the contacts to my desktop as a .csv file, then log into *her* account, and import the.csv file. That works great, except I don't have any of the thumbnail photos (which makes sense, 'cause there's nothing in the .csv file about photos). Is there another way to share my contacts with photos, short of going through the whole process of editing each contact from her account and adding a photo?

I am new to Android (Thunderbolt)
I am trying to learn the quickest and most efficient way to sync my contacts from my iPhone to my Android Phone. I have a gmail account and thus, a google account. I know how to sync my iPhone contacts from iTunes to my gmail account (but have not done this).
THE PROBLEM: The contacts I have on my iPhone are the contacts that I want to swap over to my new Android Phone. However, i have a few hundred more contacts in my gmail account that I DO NOT wish to sync to my new Android Phone.
I guess I could sync my iPhone contacts using iTunes to a NEW, separate, clean gmail account, then upload to android, and thus have only the iPhone contacts that I want to sync appear on the new Android phone.
However, if I do this, can I then switch back to my primary, preferred gmail account, from which I can then continue to receive my e-mails without syncing all the extra contacts i have in THAT account to the Android Phone?
WHAT I AM ATTEMPTING TO ACCOMPLISH: I don't want to have to sync or merge my iPhone contacts with my existing gmail account and then have to later delete hundreds of contacts off of the android phone after I have synced the Android Phone to my primary gmail account.

Just got a new HTC Desire and it is absolutely wonderful. Still getting to grips with it, and enjoying the forum for all the hints, tips and tricks. I do have a query though - although I have followed the quick start instructions, I cannot import my contacts from my old SIM card. And now, my old SIM card is not playing in my old phone (SE C905) so can't try to send them as a vcard via bluetooth.

I finally got the RAZR MAXX yesterday after that long Verizon backorder drought, and I thoroughly enjoy it coming from the Droid 4 which I gave back after two weeks solely because of the battery life. With my Droid 4, though, when I sync'd my Facebook contacts into my phone, all of my friend's profile pictures were automatically updated as well. Now, with the RAZR MAXX, I get the contact name and information from Facebook but no pictures. All those grey boxes really become an eyesore (I'm anal about that sort of thing) and it's just TOO many people to manually add pictures for.
I've tried:
Logging out of Facebook and logging back in Unsyncing the Facebook account and deleting the Facebook app, then resyncing Letting the friends list populate with pictures in the app then checking in the phonebook SyncMyPix app
Nothing is working for me.

I have just replaced my old phone with a new HTC Hero. Is there a way of importing all my contacts from CSV onto my HTC Hero without uploading them to googlemail? I was hoping there would be some software that i could install onto my PC, which would allow me to transfer the contact details across. I don't really want to manually type then in on the HTC Hero, although i don't mind cut pasting from my CSV file into some appropriate software - if such a thing exists.

Question: importing contacts. Got Exchange working without any hassles but old flip phone is a problem -- is there any easy way to import contacts from an older AT&T phone (Samsung Sync) with a SIM card? My first thought was to attempt to send them over via bluetooth, but haven't had any success.

I recently upgraded from my 8330 to the eris. On the Curve I was able to import my Facebook friends list to my phones contacts (complete with personal information and pictures). I did some reading around and either I'm too new to the Android OS or the remedy wasn't listed. If anyone has some insight on how to do this w/o a factory reset (if thats the only way let me know I could do that too). Also if I'm not giving enough information let me know too.

1. Make sure all of your contacts from your current phone are synced up with Outlook.
2. Goto File
3. Import and Export
4. Select "Export to a file" and Click Next
5. Select "Comma Seperated Values (Windows)" and click Next
6. Select Contacts and click Next
7. Choose a destination for the file to be saved and click next
8. Click Finished
If you have excel or a spreadsheet program, go ahead and open the file. In the last name field make sure that each person either has a last name or has some letter in the field or they will not import correctly. They will just end up showing up with a phone number w/o a name. After doing this, resave the file........
