Android :: Eclipse Slow When Compiling Resources

Jul 21, 2010

The last couple of weeks, my app is very slow compiling changes when the resources are modified in the project. Doesn't matter if it's strings or layout. Sometimes it takes as long as 30 seconds for the changes to apply. Compiling just the .java files are as fast as ever.

I used to have slowdowns after I having Eclipse open for the whole day, but restarting Eclipse always fixed that. Not this time. All my Eclipse and Android software is up-to-date. Has anyone experience this or have any suggestion as to what could be causing this and a fix? It's really cutting into my productivity.

Android :: Compiling Project In Eclipse 3.4.2 - Cannot Be Built

Sep 3, 2010

While compiling android project in eclipse 3.4.2, am getting The project cannot be built until the build path errors are resolved. I got a temporary solution from the blog http://www.scottdstrader.com/blog/ether_archives/000921.html

The resolution was to force a resave of the selected projects (and their .classpath files):
Open the project properties
Select Java Build Path > Libraries
Add a new, arbitrary library (to be deleted later) > OK
Wait for the workspace to refresh (or force a refresh of the project)
The error(s) will go away
Remove the dummy library

The only other references I could find were to make minor alterations of contents of the .classpath file.

Android : Skip Validation Of Single File In Eclipse / Need To Custom Compiling?

Oct 15, 2010

I've followed the steps given in the Android Developer Blog to generate a build.xml for building releases for an Android Application. I need to do a custom compiling so I have overwritten the target compile of the ant_rules_r3.xml as it is said in the generated build.xml.

<target name="compile" depends="-resource-src, -aidl, -pre-compile" ...

The script works fine and generates the apk, but the problem is that Eclipse shows an error because it cannot find targets -resource-src, -aidl and -pre-compile (which are loaded when executing the script but are not really present on the build.xml). As there are these errors I cannot work with the project in Eclipse.

How can I skip the validation of this single file in Eclipse?

Android :: Add New Resources Subfolder In Eclipse

Apr 27, 2010

I need to add a res/drawable-nodpi folder to my Eclipse ADT project. My project originally contained drawable, drawable-hdpi, drawable- ldpi, layout, etc subfolders, but no drawable-nodpi. How do I add this to the automatic resource build process? I tried to manually create the subfolder and copy files to it, but those resources are not being auto-generated. How do I make Eclipse utilize the new resources subfolder?

Android :: Every Few Hours Eclipse - ADT Runs Out Of Resources

Sep 12, 2010

When I am developing for Android and repeatedly running and/or debugging an Android app in the emulator then about every two hours or so I get an Out-of-memory exception, occasionally also an out-of - resources- or out-of-GWT-handles exception. At that point one can only stop and restart eclipse. Apparently the ADK must be doing something wrong, because I have been developing with Eclipse now for 5+ years and I normally never see this. ADT is a really the exception here. Is there any setting or patch that helps top avoid this? I have already given it more heap space (750M) to stretch the time between these hickups a bit, but that approach isn't really sustainable.

This is using Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) and the Android SDK r06 running a FroYo AVD.

Android :: How To Force Eclipse To Recreate Resources File?

Sep 7, 2010

I just had the odd case that my Android project for some reason would not properly rebuild in Eclipse (v3.5/Galileo). Occasionally that happen and so I did the usual Project => Clean... as I always do in such cases. But this time I now have the odd effect that almost all files show bugs, and looking closer it's that the compiler can't find the R-file (which is indeed missing from the gen subtree). How do I force eclipse to rebuild that file?

Android :: Improve Eclipse Performance For Projects With Lots Of Resources

Sep 13, 2009

I have notices following:

If I have a project with minimum files in res folder, the project saves quickly, compiles quickly and launches quickly. But if I have a lot of resources, my project is saving, compiling and launching during relatively long period of time. This is really frustrating if you do some minor UI updates, and you have always wait Eclipse to generate R file etc.

Android :: Eclipse Helios Running Slow

Aug 6, 2010

Just upgraded to 3.6 after this whole Sun/Oracle JVM fix/debacle and I notices that 3.6 EE runs super, duper slow. So slow to the point that code assist is unusable. Here are some changes I made to the config to make it operate a lot better:
eclipse.ini: replace the end with this:
-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.6
-XX:MaxPermSize=512m
-Xms128m
-Xmx1024m

And turn off JAX-WS Proposals in Content Assist Window > Preferences > Java > Editor > Content Assist > Advanced. I also disabled JPA and PDE, but you might need them depending on what you're doing.

Android :: Eclipse IDE With ADT Plugin - Performance Too Slow

Feb 22, 2010

I just installed the latest version of Eclipse IDE for Java Developers together with the ADT plugin on my Mac (2.8 GHz, 4 GB Ram).

- Opening new files from the package explorer.
For example, opening a layout xml file takes 1-2sec- And the mouse pointer changes.
- Switching between tabs
- Resizing views in the workspace

The performance rapidly decreases when I open more files. Are all of you developing under these circumstances? How can I speed up eclipse?

Android :: Android Compilation Slow (Using Eclipse)

May 21, 2010

When I change any .java file and build, the compilation takes 16 seconds. I don't understand why it should be so slow. I enabled verbose output for Andoroid.
Window > Preferences > Android > Build output > Verbose.

The result output (Console > Android) is:
[19:46:10] Refreshing resource folders.
[19:46:10] Starting incremental Pre Compiler: Checking resource changes.
[19:46:10] Nothing to pre compile!
[19:46:10] Starting incremental Package build: Checking resource changes.
[19:46:10] ignored resource ...in.classes.dex
[19:46:10] processing ...A.class
[19:46:10] processing ...B.class
...
[19:46:21] processing com/google/inject/util/Providers.class...
[19:46:21] processing com/google/inject/util/Types.class...
[19:46:24] Using default debug key to sign package
[19:46:24] Packaging ...in
esources.ap_
[19:46:24] Packaging classes.dex
...
[19:46:25] Packaging ...annotations.jar
[19:46:25] Build Success!
[19:46:25] Refreshing resource folders.
[19:46:25] Starting incremental Pre Compiler: Checking resource changes.
[19:46:26] Nothing to pre compile!

The "processing" of .class files took 14 seconds. And it "processed" all files, even from all .jar files linked. I think some thing wrong goes here, as only one .java file was changed. What can I do to improve the compilation speed?

Android :: Eclipse Android SDK Slow Performance

Oct 17, 2010

I am running eclipse on my windows 7 machine, 6bit with 6gb ram and core 2 duo. I am currently running Eclipse 3.6 and android 2.2 SDK. I am running jdk 1.6. I am noticing that when coding and the context popups to list methods of a class, it hangs Eclipse for up to 15 seconds. This is very frustrating. One thing to note, when Eclipse hangs, my processor is maxed out, and is being worked by a java process. So its doing something whatever it is. But frequently everytime I finish an object with a period and the context box pops up, its becoming too painful to work with.

I changed some settings in the Eclipse.ini file such as:
-Xms1024m
-Xmx1024m
--launcher.XXMaxPermSize 512m

Android :: Android - Retrieving All Drawable Resources From Resources Object

Jul 11, 2010

In my Android project, I want to loop through the entire collection of Drawable resources. Normally, you can only retrieve a specific resource via its ID using something like:

InputStream is = Resources.getSystem().openRawResource(resourceId)

However, I want to get all Drawable resources where I won't know their ID's beforehand. Is there a collection I can loop through or perhaps a way to get the list of resource ID's given the resources in my project?

Or, is there a way for me in Java to extract all property values from the R.drawable static class?

Android :: Internal Compiler Error When Compiling Native Code

Aug 9, 2010

Currently I am trying to compile native code for Android. The code is from the OpenCV port for Android. I pasted all the code correctly in my project and edited my make files accordingly. When I set android:debuggable to false everything works fine and I get my native library. When I try while android:debuggable is set to true I get an error.

Here is a part of the log:

CODE:....................

From what I have found on the internet this is caused by the optimization level of the compilation. As long as the code isn't compiled so that is is debuggable afterwards everything should be fine.

Now apparently it is possible to avoid this by setting APP-OPTIM := release in the Application.mk or adding -O2 to LOCAL_CFLAGS. I have tried both and still I get this error.

Right now I don't really care that much about debugging my native code, but I would like to have basic debugging enabled. And I don't want to keep switching android:debuggable in my manifest every time I want to compile. I'm not even sure if it is okay at all if I just set android:debuggable to false pre compiling and to true post compiling, but I am sure I will forget it every second run.
