Android :: Improve Eclipse Performance For Projects With Lots Of Resources

Sep 13, 2009

I have notices following:

If I have a project with minimum files in res folder, the project saves quickly, compiles quickly and launches quickly. But if I have a lot of resources, my project is saving, compiling and launching during relatively long period of time. This is really frustrating if you do some minor UI updates, and you have always wait Eclipse to generate R file etc.

Android :: AIDL In Multiple Projects In Eclipse

Mar 16, 2010

I have problems with the following: I want to create to applications. One with a Android service and one with a Activity that will use functions on the Service. Before I splitted this in to applications I got everything working in one application. I can call functions (that are definned in the aidl - file) on the service without problems.

Now the problems coms. I splitted the application into two parts, a Service application and Gui application. The bindins to the service (in the gui application) works and I see that the service is getting created. Then in the onServiceConnected function of the ServiceConnection class I created the following:

mService = IMyService.Stub.asInterface(service);
And this gives me the following exception:
03-16 13:53:05.549: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(881): java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: MyPackage.IMyService$Stub

It looks like he can't find the Stub class in IMyService. But the Stub is part of the java file generated out of the aidl-file. Why I get this exception or how I can resolve this?

Android :: Eclipse Not Importing Jar Dependencies Between Two Projects

Jun 7, 2010

Here is the situation.
I have a java project "LicenseGenerator" in eclipse that depends on commons-codec. I have therefore added the commons-codec jar file to the build path. I have Junit tests and everything is working fine. I have made a different project in the same workspace - which happens to be an Android project - that needs to use my LicenseGenerator classes. I added LicenseGenerator to the "projects" tab in the build path - the classes were recognized and I was able to use them.

Everything compiled and ran. However, when the part of the LicenseGenerator that used the commons-codec was called from my Android project I got the following error.
Could not find method
org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64.encodeBase64URLSafeString,
Referenced from method
This basically tells me that the commons-codec was not packaged which the Android project, so I added the commons-codec to the android project as well but the same error appears.

I went to the Build Path and added the library project to the "Required projects on the build path" on the Projects tab, and checked it on the "Order and Export" tab. However, when the application is run, it emits VerifyError exception, because the class from the library project didn't happen to be packaged together in the apk.

Android :: Android - How To Share Code Between Projects Signed With Same Certificate

Apr 27, 2010

In Android documentation concerning code signing we can read: "By signing multiple applications with the same certificate and using signature-based permissions checks, your applications can share code and data in a secure manner." How exactly such code sharing can be done? Is it possible to release main application and multiple exchangeable plugins then discover them at runtime? What does source code looks like and what are advantages over "standard" intents calls from/to different APK packages?

Android :: Referencing Projects Under Java Build Path In Eclipse

Jul 27, 2009

I'm working on two projects. One is essentially a library, and the other is an application using that library. Now from the application project, I want to use the library's classes, so I added that project to the "required projects" under java build path. It seems to compile fine, but at runtime, I get this error:

07-27 11:26:57.037: ERROR/dalvikvm(741): Could not find class 'interdroid.contextframework.ContextManager', referenced from method com.bartvanwissen.contextframeworktest.MainActivity.onCreate

Apparently, the library project's classes are not added to the apk file. How can I make sure they are included? Since I'm working on both projects at the same time, I would like to prevent having to create a jar file every time I want to test something.

Android :: Share Classes Between Different Android Projects?

Jan 20, 2009

I have two projects that share classes in a third project. Eclipse happily allows me to reference these external classes when I am developing the two dependant projects (as long as the Java Build Path is set up right), but when I try launching the dependant projects, the external classfiles are not copied into the .apk for some reason, so at runtime I get unsatisfied link errors. I don't want to have to maintain multiple copies of the same source file, or even have a copy of these external classfiles in the dependant projects. I also want to avoid adding an extra build step where I build the external classfiles, package them up in a .jar file and include them in the dependant projects. How can I get the Android SDK to simply put a copy of any referenced (non-SDK, non-project) external classes in the .apk at build time?

Android :: Eclipse Slow When Compiling Resources

Jul 21, 2010

The last couple of weeks, my app is very slow compiling changes when the resources are modified in the project. Doesn't matter if it's strings or layout. Sometimes it takes as long as 30 seconds for the changes to apply. Compiling just the .java files are as fast as ever.

I used to have slowdowns after I having Eclipse open for the whole day, but restarting Eclipse always fixed that. Not this time. All my Eclipse and Android software is up-to-date. Has anyone experience this or have any suggestion as to what could be causing this and a fix? It's really cutting into my productivity.

Android :: Every Few Hours Eclipse - ADT Runs Out Of Resources

Sep 12, 2010

When I am developing for Android and repeatedly running and/or debugging an Android app in the emulator then about every two hours or so I get an Out-of-memory exception, occasionally also an out-of - resources- or out-of-GWT-handles exception. At that point one can only stop and restart eclipse. Apparently the ADK must be doing something wrong, because I have been developing with Eclipse now for 5+ years and I normally never see this. ADT is a really the exception here. Is there any setting or patch that helps top avoid this? I have already given it more heap space (750M) to stretch the time between these hickups a bit, but that approach isn't really sustainable.

This is using Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) and the Android SDK r06 running a FroYo AVD.

Android :: How To Force Eclipse To Recreate Resources File?

Sep 7, 2010

I just had the odd case that my Android project for some reason would not properly rebuild in Eclipse (v3.5/Galileo). Occasionally that happen and so I did the usual Project => Clean... as I always do in such cases. But this time I now have the odd effect that almost all files show bugs, and looking closer it's that the compiler can't find the R-file (which is indeed missing from the gen subtree). How do I force eclipse to rebuild that file?

Android :: Android Eclipse Test Projects Cannot Be Used With A Project Being Built

Mar 24, 2010

An Android Java project placed in a git repository and built in an Android tree in /packages/apps needs to have the project files located at the root of the git repository. This is problematic for creating a complementary Test project, which should ideally be included in the same git repository so commits are atomic for both code and tests. Eclipse gets very unhappy if you include the Test project as a subdirectory. Is there an appropriate approach for dealing with this other than creating a second repository?

Android :: Multiple Dependent Android Projects In Eclipse

Jun 14, 2010

I just started to play with android dev and java+eclipse is pretty new to me. I managed to create simple project and run it on my device. Now I want to create simple game (more of them actually) and I would love to use shared code base for all of them (game loop, initialization, etc..). Problem is that I have no idea how to correctly do this. I created android project called engine with all basic stuff that I need and made it work on device. Now I tried to create another project in same workspace called mygame. Main class (activity) of mygame is MyGameApp which inherits from EngineApp (main activity of my engine project) which inherits from Activity. I added engine project into required projects in mygame build path tab in properties. Problem is that when I try to run this project it crashes on ClassNotFoundException trying to find my MyGameApp class.

Android :: IOException When Running Android Projects In Eclipse

Jun 17, 2010

Every time I try to run an Android project from Eclipse with the Android plugin (Run -> Run), the emulator starts up just fine, but the upload fails, and the Console puts out this error message:

[2010-06-17 08:17:55 - HelloAndroid] Failed to upload HelloAndroid.apk on device 'emulator-5554'

It seems as though the apk compilation is failing, but there are no other errors in the Console at all except for a lone warning about the project not specifying an API Level requirement:

Android :: How To Create App By Allowing Duplication Of Contact?

May 3, 2010

I think the title says it all, don't you? It should be possible to create a new contact App by duplicating an existing one, either in GMail Contacts (in a full-fledged browser) or directly in the Contacts app on an Android device. This would allow, for example, adding new members of a family or new employees of a company. Then, just the new name, email or phone number (or whatever) could be entered to replace the duplicated ones and leave the remaining fields all the same. As a former Palm user, I was able to do this on that platform (primitive as it now seems by comparison to Android).

Android :: Is There A Design Pattern To Cut Down On Code Duplication When Subclassing Activities?

Apr 6, 2010

I've got a common task that I do with some Activities - downloading data then displaying it. I've got the downloading part down pat; it is, of course, a little tricky due to the possibility of the user changing the orientation or cancelling the Activity before the download is complete, but the code is there. There is enough code handling these cases such that I don't want to have to copy/paste it to each Activity I have, so I thought to create an abstract subclass Activity itself such that it handles a single background download which then launches a method which fills the page with data.

This all works. The issue is that, due to single inheritance, I am forced to recreate the exact same class for any other type of Activity - for example, I use Activity, ListActivity and MapActivity. To use the same technique for all three requires three duplicate classes, except each extends a different Activity.

Is there a design pattern that can cut down on the code duplication? As it stands, I have saved much duplication already, but it pains me to see the exact same code in three classes just so that they each subclass a different type of Activity.

Edit: Since it seems I need to be a bit more specific...

Suppose I'm trying to solve the problem of an AsyncTask background download during orientation changes. The solution I have right now is to use callbacks; there's download manager that I have which starts these downloads, and then I have the Activity attach a callback to it. When the orientation changes the Activity is destroyed and then recreated; during this process I detach the old Activity's callback, then attach a new callback from the new Activity afterwards.

Orientation changes are a common problem, and in multiple Activities I start the Activity with a progress view while the data loads. What I am trying to solve is not having to re-implement this orientation-handling logic ten times over; my initial solution was to subclass Activity, but then I got the problem above.

HTC Hero :: App Contact Duplication?

This is happening to every contact. I don't have any actual duplicates saved in my contact list, it's just listing them twice in the app.I have checked and double checked that I don't have contacts listed as both Google and Phone, all my contacts are Google.I have checked on a desktop browser in my Google contacts and I don't have any duplicates saved. To note: This is only happening in the People App, there are no duplicates when I go to the "Phone" menu, and there are no duplicates when I use the People Widget or Live Folder Widget. It's a minor problem, but one that I hope somebody can help me with.
