Android :: Do Services *really* Run In Background / Technique For Start It?
Apr 9, 2010
I have a scenario where I start a Service from a splash screen. If I intentionally cause problems in that Service (such as an invalid port for the Socket connection) my UI Thread locks up. I have put a Timer in the Service, and have it perform logging at every tick. The Timer works from within the Service without flaw. So from that, I think I have determined that only the UI Thread is suffering.
If I start a Service from an Activity and that Service has an issue (i.e. server connection problems), should that result in a lockup in the UI thread from which it was launched?
Is there a technique for starting a Service and having it truly run in the background?

I am reading the initialization process of Android system on the emulator. I use "adb logcat" to see the internal output. I have read according to the following order: init -> init.rc -> zygote(init1->init2) -> systemReady(start com.android.phone and android.process.acore) However, the log has some lines about starting other processes.code..

Is there way to control which applications/services start when the phone boots? Every now and then, the voice control, moxie mailer, etc will be running when I don't use them, need them, or want them to run. I'd like to be able to control which items are running in the background, much like an 'msconfig' in Windows.

I was told that i should be using services in a new .java file in order to invoke and extend to do background video recording, but i don't seems to know how to do it despite reading tons of sites related to services, , i have read tons of it.. I tried using AsyncTask but my lecturer told me cannot. whether is it using AsyncTask or services to perform background recording?
This is what tried for my mainactivity where it performs previewing of the captured image, but how should i convert the startRecording() method to service method in my new startRecording.java file?
Code:
public class CameraTest extends Activity implements SurfaceHolder.Callback {
private static final String TAG ="CAMERA_TUTORIAL";
private SurfaceView surfaceView;
[Code].....

Are services like Tasker now safe from being killing if running in the background?
I would prefer running such services in background instead of foreground to save space on the notification bar.
So I was wondering how risky is running services in the background with JB?

I am developing an android game right now, and it requires very precise timing and synchronization. That said, it is essential that there is no lag during the game. However I sometimes get lag spikes in the game, and I know its not the GC because I have run the ddms tool, and eliminated all the GC calls. However, I do see alot of background services popping up in my ddms logcat. Is there anyway to pause all services when my game is running?

I have an app which runs as a background service only. I'l like it to start up when its installed. As its just a background service it doesnt show up on the pane of installed apps. So there is no way for the user to manually start it. I've already regietered for the BOOT_COMPLETED intent which works but I dont want the user to have to power off the phone after the app has been installed, just so as they can start it.
I've looked at the following intents: ACTION_PACKAGE_ADDED/CHANGED/ REPLACED/RESTARTED/INSTALL, ACTION_SCREEN_ON/OFF, ACTION_USER_PRESENT, ACTION_TIME_TICK,
But it doesnt seem that you can register to listen for them from my manifest.
How I can start my background service without a power off/on?

I'm using Wikitude API 1.1 as an AR viewer in my application. The problem with Wikitude, if I haven't launched the actual Wikitude application since the phone's bootup, I will get a NullPointerException everytime I start my own application.
So I figure if I can start my app first and them check if Wikitude is installed and or running. If it's not installed, go to market n download. If it's not running, then we should run it straight to background so that my app doesn't loose its focuscode...
The part I block commented is the intent to start Wikitude. But I always failed in restricting Wikitude to background. Any help?

I respond to a text message and all of a sudden FRING and QIK are running again? Why? Can settings be adjusted manually or do I need to Force Stop in Settings - Applications every time I turn on the phone?

I created an application which enables the user to set whether he wants to receive notification while the application runs in background mode. If the notifications are enabled an activity should be started (the dialog should appear on the screen).
I tried to enabled it the following way:
CODE:...........
This is the method from main activity. When onPause() is executed isRunningInBackground is set true.
When I tried to debug it when the main application was running in the background the line
startActivity(intent) had no effect (the activity didn't appear).
Does anyone know how to midify the logic in order to start an activity from the main activity when the main activity is running in the background (after onPause() is called)?

I'm trying to understand the idea behind the Services. If it runs in the program's thread, why not create just a separate thread (or AsyncTask) to do the job? Can a service keep running in the background? For example, i want to create a task that will continuously be polling data from a server, even if the main application is not running. Can this be achieved with a Service?

In my ideal little dream world, I'd like to have a custom service running that handles network comms. Activities (e.g. UIs) then add listeners to it and it provides callbacks when anything interesting happens.
As it stands, I can't see how to do this in an appropriate way. OK, you can call bindService() and have a ServiceConnection implementation that monitors the service state. From there you can easily talk *to* the service whenever you desire, using serialisation over transactions, but I don't think that helps with communication initiated by the service.
The only way I know of doing what I want is by maintaining static collections of listeners on the service class, which doesn't strike me as good engineering.

When an app gets permission to access your Google account's Android services exactly what does it have access to? Is it authenticated to access all your google stuff including gmail?
For example, I installed Changelog Droid from the play store and it wants to access my Android services. I understand it probably only needs the permission to access my play store account to analyze my installed apps, but what else is open to it if I give it the permission?

I have a couple of services in my application which need to be marked as foreground to prevent them from being killed unnecessarily. Currently I am building my application with the 2.0 SDK but I have android:minSdkVersion="3" android:targetSdkVersion="5" in my manifest file so that I can support 1.5, 1.6 or 2.0 devices. I am currently using only the 1.5 APIs so that my application will run correctly on the 1.5 devices.
2.0 introduced a nicer startForground method that combines setting the foreground flag and starting a notification which can be used to control the service. The 2.0 documentation says that startForground replaces setForeground, and that due to the fact that many applications were mistakenly using setForeground without a notification that could be used to control and close down the service, that the older setForeground method had been changed so it no longer does anything on 2.0. I tried using the newer 2.0 interface but it caused an exception for phones running 1.5 or 1.6. So I am still using the older setForeground interface and calling notify separately. But it appears that since I am building with the 2.0 SDK the older interface isn't really preventing my services from being killed.
