I want to use GPS service for better accuracy in my program, but want the location only once in every couple of hours. To get GPS location the GPS had to be started already manually through Settings->Location Security->Use GPS Satellites. But the problem is GPS continuously running whether I need the location or not and drains the battery quickly. My question is what is the equivalent API for the checkbox selection of,

New to android programming and I would like to create an app that runs when the power button is pressed (the phone will already be 'on' as such but the screen 'off')
So - one press of the power button to 'activate/show' the screen will make the app run (without requireing the user to unlock the screen).
Is this possible. How do I capture the 'power button press' event and then direct it to run *app xxx*.

I have an app which runs as a background service only. I'l like it to start up when its installed. As its just a background service it doesnt show up on the pane of installed apps. So there is no way for the user to manually start it. I've already regietered for the BOOT_COMPLETED intent which works but I dont want the user to have to power off the phone after the app has been installed, just so as they can start it.
I've looked at the following intents: ACTION_PACKAGE_ADDED/CHANGED/ REPLACED/RESTARTED/INSTALL, ACTION_SCREEN_ON/OFF, ACTION_USER_PRESENT, ACTION_TIME_TICK,
But it doesnt seem that you can register to listen for them from my manifest.
How I can start my background service without a power off/on?

I have a scenario where I start a Service from a splash screen. If I intentionally cause problems in that Service (such as an invalid port for the Socket connection) my UI Thread locks up. I have put a Timer in the Service, and have it perform logging at every tick. The Timer works from within the Service without flaw. So from that, I think I have determined that only the UI Thread is suffering.
If I start a Service from an Activity and that Service has an issue (i.e. server connection problems), should that result in a lockup in the UI thread from which it was launched?
Is there a technique for starting a Service and having it truly run in the background?

I'm using Wikitude API 1.1 as an AR viewer in my application. The problem with Wikitude, if I haven't launched the actual Wikitude application since the phone's bootup, I will get a NullPointerException everytime I start my own application.
So I figure if I can start my app first and them check if Wikitude is installed and or running. If it's not installed, go to market n download. If it's not running, then we should run it straight to background so that my app doesn't loose its focuscode...
The part I block commented is the intent to start Wikitude. But I always failed in restricting Wikitude to background. Any help?

I have noticed this problem multiple times now with my droid. When I plug my droid in to charge at night, it appears to charge up to 100%, then stops charging and begins to lose its charge. When I wake up it is usually around 60 or 70%. I recently bought the multimedia dock to see if this would help. But with this it actually fully discharges because the clock is up on the screen.

I need to use this for a Samsung Tablet.Usually if the device is switched-off and the USB cable is being connected the display will wake up for some seconds showing an animated battery.Instead I want to let it boot.I suspect this is close to the metal. Where do I have to make a modification? In the kernel, in the Android platform, or is this hidden in some proprietary code of the manufacturer?

I have written a class which extends the Service class of android and would like to launch the service during device boot-up. From the service I would like to receive the intents such as boot completed and screen off and on. Currently I am using a BroadcastReceiver to get the boot completed intent and then on starting a service to receive screen on and off intents. But I would like to remove either the broadcast receiver or the service. Any inputs.

I've read the posts that state that there is no way to automatically start a service right after the package is installed. In my case, i have two apps- one runs as a service and collects data, the other displays it. the second app has the Activity which can be used to start the service. in order to provide the most accurate information, the service must be started immediately after installation. however, if the user decides not to run the activity immediately, then there would be a gap between the time the service is installed, versus when it gets started. of course, asking user to reboot after installation is one option, but not a great user experience. Any suggestions on how to achieve this?

Does anyone know how to get the debugger to launch on an ADP1?. It was recently flashed to 1.5. Dev platform is Eclipse on Windows XP with the SDK 1.5 USB driver installed (HTC Dream Composite Interface). Windows can see the device and adb can see the device with "adb devices" command. USB Debugging has been enabled on the device and the application manifest has android:debuggable="true" set in it. The LogCat windows is showing log output from the ADP1 too.
But when Selecting Run->Debug or Run->Run the avd is always launched. The instructions say that it should launch to the device or give a choice if the avd is running too.
Do anyone know what needs to be done to get the debugger to launch against the real device instead of the avd?

Has anyone else noticed that the Desire seems to power off VERY VERY slowly, or is it just me? Literally, and with no exaggeration, I hit the power button on the phone to power it down at 10:38am, and as of 10:56am the thing is STILL trying to power off.
I don't turn the phone off very often, but every now and then it's worth it, but it's taking far too long and I keep having to pull the battery. Anyone got any thoughts?
I'm assuming theres an app that is causing all the bother, but I can't think what. Anyone know of any apps that have this sort of problem? If noone knows, I'm going to have to factory-reset the phone, and I really don't want to have to set it all up again.

I want to develop a peripheral device to connect to an android phone via USB OTG. The OTG specs [1] says: "A Targeted Host shall provide sufficient power to each peripheral on its TPL in at least one supported configuration".
Where do I find those TPL ("Targeted Peripheral List") lists? I searched at Sony Ericsson (because I have a Xperia Mini) and Samsung (as a different manufacturer) but with no luck. Is this an android related list?
On github I found a code fragement [2] from DooMLoRD. It mentions a OTG whitelist. But it seems to be something like a skeleton.
I do this research because I want to use the peripheral device in high power mode with about 300 mA. I thought I could compare the TPL with devices that also need 300 mA.

I would like to alert the user that a a connectivity change event has occurred by popping up a Toast View on the device screen. Is this possible ? Can it be done even though a Service component does not have a UI associated with it ?
