General :: Keeping Background Services Running?

Feb 5, 2013

Are services like Tasker now safe from being killing if running in the background?

I would prefer running such services in background instead of foreground to save space on the notification bar.

So I was wondering how risky is running services in the background with JB?

HTC Incredible :: Memory Used By Unknown File Running In Background

Aug 11, 2010

I woke up this morning to a song playing from my phone that I made with xPiano about 2 weeks ago. I have no idea why this file was activated and when I looked at my task killer, most of my phone's memory had been used up but no programs were running in the background. I've never seen it get this low even when using 20 programs at a time. I've been using a mixture of apps that I've downloaded off of my computer and through the market. Is there any way that someone has access to my device and can look through all of my files/folders? Are there any known hacks/Trojans/viruses that do this?

General :: Acore Processes Running Amok On Jelly Bean?

Aug 6, 2012

I've been flashing ROMs built on the latest code for Jelly Bean (4.1.1). (The phone is the Galaxy Nexus LTE.)

The battery has been draining fast and upon checking with OS Monitor, I learned that a bunch of android.process.acore processes, sometimes alone and sometimes with another, have been registering high CPU loads continuously until they run the battery down.They are Contacts Storage, User Dictionary, and DRM Protected Content Storage. (DRM is probably not an acore service but it is making trouble just the same.)

I tried winnowing down the problem by deleting the contact store data and resyncing while de-activating third party syncers like HacSync. I even tried cleaning up the contacts via Google on the web. The contacts number only a few hundred. Again, the processes up claiming huge load after the initial sync period.

I scoured the web for reports but have only found mentions dating back to Gingerbread or ICS involving Facebook. Facebook sync doesn't work with JB and again, I have disabled HaxSync.

I also froze User Dictionary with Titanium Backup but that did nothing to keep the process from running, even after a reboot.

Android :: Background Processes Not Being CPU-limited?

Apr 19, 2010

We were told that, as of Android 1.6, background processes were put in a Linux process scheduling class that limited how much CPU they would use. A few weeks ago, I ran a benchmark test that seemed to validate this claim.I have run more tests, and I am no longer confident in my earlier conclusion. I can get a background process to significantly impact the foreground process, more than would seem to be possible if the background process was, indeed, CPU-limited.

General :: How Do Running Services Effect Battery Life And Responsiveness

May 8, 2013

I have been using HTC Desire S for about 2 yrs now, but since I am not a power user, I just use it as it came. Now considering to root it and was looking more closely at things and I see there are many services running in the background under "Running".

I don't know the inner workings of Android system, so would like to know if more services are running (especially from apps which I don't regularly use) then does it effect battery life and does it make the phone slower ?

For example under Calendar, 4 services are running - AutoSettingService, ImmediateModeService, DashboardService,ConnecttoPcService.

Google Maps has TrafficAppWidgetUpdateService and PrefetcherService ( I rarely use Google maps because I use offline rmaps)

Another thing is I have a prepaid connection without a data plan so I would like to control which apps connect to the net when i switch on 3G - i mean I would prefer if only the app which I want to use the data should use it, while others should not.

And there are some things taking data, which i don't really understand - but since they are related to Android system I am not sure whether to try to restrict them (Android System, HTC Function test, HTC Checkin service, Settings storage, VPN, Status bar, Bluetooth, Google backpp transport, etc, Phone, Dialer Storage, SIM toolkit)

Any general idea about these services - battery and network usage and effect on responsiveness ?

Samsung Galaxy S :: How Many Processes Should Be Running?

Aug 14, 2010

I have advanced task killer on my phone but am amazed at the numbers of processes it seems to kill. I have the ones I know I need set not to close down like adw launcher the HTC keyboard etc however it regularly reports its closed down 40 + processes when I run it.The I run it a few moments later, not having launched anything, and it reports shutting down another 20 or so.Is this right?Could this be the cause of the lagging? I am currently running JM5 firmware which seemed amazing to start with but now seems as laggy as it was before.

Decent battery life, nothing hangs up too bad.But, I just installed ATK and it's weird.I kill all the processes, then they mysteriously come back a little while later without being open by me.Why? Yet the available memory seems damn decent, 100 available most of the time.Also I installed LockBot And every once in a while it just wont be on my screen. It will just go back to it's original hit unlock to unlock screen.

HTC Incredible :: Multiple Flicker Processes Running?

I don't use task killers or any nonsense like that, but I keep OS Monitor running so I can see if my CPU is running when it shouldn't be. While opening OS monitor and looking at my processes I noticed last night that there were like 6 flicker processes. They weren't currently using any cpu or anything, but why are there 6? And now today I noticed there are 2 running. (after re-start / battery charge)

Android :: Game Doesn't Work Due To Thread Background Processes

Mar 8, 2010

I have written a very simple game with some simple animations, but I've noticed that when the phone checks email, or several other apps are running, the animations that update in my thread start behaving slowly or choppy. This is a problem as the game mechanic requires some careful timing of your screen touches based on the animations. So if it starts behaving erratically, the game doesn't really work well - and isn't much fun.
Is there a way to prevent this? Can my threads have a higher priority when they need to run?

General :: Running Sh Script On Background

Oct 17, 2011

I wrote some sh script to my device which has to run for a long period of time. I wanted to run the script on the background so i run the script with "&" but for some reason the script freeze whenever the device is getting into standby mode.I made some testing script (called testcode.sh) which simply count seconds to see what happen

Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
i=0
while (); do
sleep 1
i=$((i+1))
echo -e "

It has been $i sec since the script started" done.I run the script from a terminal (./testcode.sh &) and saw the counter start counting, i then put the device to standby mode (short press on the power button) and waited for 10 min. after 10 min i open the device and saw that the counter still counts but the time was 3 min (180 sec).

So i guess the script kept running for 3 min then hang for some reason and resume when the device got off standby mode.Is there a way to make my script keep on running ?

General :: Prevent App From Running In Background?

Jan 25, 2012

What exactly can keep an app running in the background, regardless of what efforts your take to disable it?

If I don't use an app much and don't want it running, I normally freeze the app. If it is an app I tend to use a bit more frequently, I take other measures such as an app manager that allows me to be extremely precise as to how and when it should run such as on startup, battery level, configuration change, application change, etc. I really don't have the time to do this for every application.

With that said, I'm wondering what other methods, other than freezing and the other mentioned above, I can take to prevent an app from running in the background?

I will give you a perfect example...

There are some third-party apps I have downloaded that I know I will use occasionally. One example is CamScanner. For the life of me, I can't get this app to stop running in the background without extensive efforts mentioned above. No matter what I do, it just pops up again in running applications.

How can I ensure the app will not run in background while not resorting to freezing the app, which will prevent me from quickly accessing it when needed?

Android :: Do Services *really* Run In Background / Technique For Start It?

Apr 9, 2010

I have a scenario where I start a Service from a splash screen. If I intentionally cause problems in that Service (such as an invalid port for the Socket connection) my UI Thread locks up. I have put a Timer in the Service, and have it perform logging at every tick. The Timer works from within the Service without flaw. So from that, I think I have determined that only the UI Thread is suffering.

If I start a Service from an Activity and that Service has an issue (i.e. server connection problems), should that result in a lockup in the UI thread from which it was launched?

Is there a technique for starting a Service and having it truly run in the background?
