Android :: Database Access Design Approach

Aug 30, 2010

I have a general Android design question around data access. I have a number of activities in my application that need to access a SQLite database. In order to wrap up all data access logic in one place I have created a DatbaseHandler class that takes care of all data access logic. This class takes care of building up where clauses, calling the database and interrogating the resulting cursor to retrieve the query results and return them to the caller. The purpose of this class is to wrap all data access code in one place so that it can be easily managed and maintained as opposed to having data access logic scattered across all activities. Each activity that needs access to the database creates an instance of this DatabaseHandler class and passes it a reference of android.content.Context. The DatabaseHandler class then uses this Context object to call an underlying content provider as follows context_i.getContentResolver().query(...).

My data access logic (cursor handling logic to be specific) is not in the activity and so I cannot manage the cursors life cycle, therefore there is likely to be memory leaks.

My questions are as follows -

How can I (if its even possible) manage the cursors life cycle from outside an Activity? Should each activity even be creating an instance of this data handler class and passing an instance of Context to it? Perhaps my design approach is wrong and I should expose these data access functions as static methods that take an instance of the calling activity as a parameter. That way I could perform managed queries and let the activity take care of managing the cursors life cycle?

Android : Database Adapter Design / Want To Access SQLite DB

Oct 16, 2010

I'm developing an Android application with a database. That database will have more than three tables. Now I'm working on a class called DBAdapter to access the SQLite Database. DBAdpater will have five methods for every table on database (insertEntry, removeEntry, getAllEntries, getEntry and updateEntry). So, if I have five table, DBApadter will have more than twenty-five methods. I think is so huge. How may DBAdapter classes should be?

Android :: Inter Activity Communication In Tab Host Application

Jul 22, 2009

Here's the deal: I have an Android application that needs to call a web service every X seconds (currently 60 seconds). This application has multiple tabs and these tabs all need to interact with the data themselves. One is a MapView, one is a ListView and then the third is irrelevant but will need to also get some global data eventually. The issue is that I want my main activity to have a thread that runs in the background, gets the results and then instructs both child activities in the TabHost to update themselves with the latest data. Also, when the user clicks on the tabs and the onCreate/onResume activities fire, I would also like to force a redraw by getting the latest data from the main activity. I'm really at a loss here. I've tried this with a service and some ghetto static methods to pass an instance of the Activities to the Service to call specific functions to update their views whenever the timer fired, but the slowdowns were pretty bad and the code was just ugly ugly ugly.

So I implemented it as a timer-driven thread in the tabhost activity and then I have timer-driven threads in each child activity that then grab the data (in a synchronized fashion) and update their map/list. It's much faster but still feels slightly hack-ish, especially the part where I'm calling a custom function in the parent activity like so:
((MainActivity)getParent()).getNearbyMatches();
This adds an element of strong coupling that I'm not entirely thrilled with, but from a performance standpoint it's much better than it was. I appreciate the answers that have already been given and will do a bit of research on the content provider front but I'm not sure I want to go back to the service model.

Android : Send Message From One Application To Another On Another Device - Remote - Communication

For example, imagine playing Tic-Tac-Toe; but I'm the X's on my phone and the O's are my brother on his Android phone. I think it can be done via application specific messaging. Looking to see if it is possible, and, if so, how to send a message from one application to another on another device.

Android :: Application Design - Accessing Website Data

Oct 19, 2010

I am new to Android development and am interested in working out a design of an application. I am however, unfamiliar with the best way to handle what I want to do. I am interested in obtaining information from my band's Joomla website and placing it into an Android application. At the moment I'd like to get News articles posted and potentially other information that I create on the site. I was thinking of doing this by setting up RSS feeds for the website. Would it be better to somehow access the data directly by connecting to the database? I don't know PHP so I can't develop a webservice to access the content. Any ideas?

Android :: Supporting Multiple Screens / Most Optical Way To Design Application?

Jun 9, 2010

I have read the topic about supporting multiple screen size as well as different DPI. I am wondering which of the following way is better in supporting multiple screens:

1. Have different layout for different screen size (stretch the images)
2. Have different set of graphics for different screen (use the same layout)
3. Have different set of graphics and different set of layout for each of the screen

Which way is the easiest? And which way is the most optical way to design? Or is there another better way?

Android :: Centralized Database / Application Hosting

Apr 6, 2010

I am writing an app that will require a centralized database, along with a small app to digest incoming file data and populate this database.
android phone -> file -> some app somewhere -> some database somewhere

I know this is probably a fairly common situation. Is there a particular hosting service/solution for this? Many apps must do something like this (with high score tables and the like). The trick is, I can't use one of the high-score-specific hosting sites, because I need the app in front of the database to interpret the incoming files.

Android :: Deleting Application Database From Emulator

Sep 16, 2010

I'm testing an application I'm working on and I wanted to delete the database my application creates so I could read all the data from my web server back in to a fresh one.

I launched adb, went to data/data/my.applicaton.package/databases and did a "rm mydatabase". This deleted the database (note: I've done this many many times before without a problem).

I launched my application again and, to my surprise, a new database wasn't created. Even more surprising is there was data in my application. My application is still pulling the data from some where! It gets a Cursor from my database and uses a CursorAdapter to populate the list. So, it is obviously reading from a database (seemingly a cached one?).

I don't fully understand it. I'm not sure, even though I have an example, what is precisely supposed to be conveyed here. How do I determine the MIME type of my different tables of data?

In the onCreate method in my main activity everything is fine and working. So, the conclusion is that i must put some value for the first time i run the app so it can work properly.
