Android :: Data Security Options Available On Phone

Dec 4, 2009

I am not yet an Android phone user but I am thinking about it. I currently have a Palm phone and I have used palm os for several years. What I appreciated with palm is the good data security level, for example some records can be hidden and opened only by entering a password. Is that kind of functions available on android phones?

HTC EVO 4G :: Best Security Options

Jul 22, 2010

Just curious, are there any methods or apps that add security to your phone? Like locating a stolen phone, or wiping memory when stolen, etc.One idea, if the phone is lost or stolen: I use Locale. I could set a condition that triggers the "open shortcut" situation, and turns ON Google Latitude. The condition could be a calendar event. When I realize that the phone is lost or stolen, I could set a G-cal event that starts immediately, so when the phone syncs the calendar to Google, it triggers the Locale condition/situation.

-If you don't use Locale, you are probably really confused after reading that. That's ok.

-Google Latitude basically shows you and your friends on a G-map. That way, when it gets stolen, I could go to Latitude on my comp and find my stolen phone. It's bundled with Google Maps (I think).

I want to hear what you guys use for security on your phones. Whether it's a simple app that lets you find it around the house (Wheres My Droid), or something more complex, like the idea above.

Android :: Disabling Text To Speech Logging For Data Security

Aug 3, 2010

My application has some data which I would like to keep secure. I have also enabled the application to use text-to-speech. Unfortunately, the application writes out whatever it says to the log file. This means that a third party application (with permissions to access the logs) could gain access to the data. Is there any way I can disable Android logging the text to speech data?

Android :: Options For Pulling Data From Website?

Sep 28, 2010

I was wondering what the best approach is on Android to retrieve information from a HTML page hosted on the internet? For example I'd like to be able to get the text from the following page at the start of each day:http://www.met.ie/ forecasts /sea-area.asp I have been downloading and parsing XML files but I have never tried to parse information from a HTML type file before. Is there a native way to parse the information I want?Or do I need a third party library?Or do I need to look into screen scraping?

Android :: Options For Sharing App Data On Multiple Phones

Aug 22, 2010

I'm looking for suggestions for ways to share Android app data between phones running the same app. For example, lets say I have an app that stores a database of book reviews. If person A has a book review that person B doesn't have, what are the options for getting that information from person A's phone to person B's phone?

Currently, I'm aware of the following options:

- Upload data from person A's phone to a server, then download data from server to Person B's phone.
- Write code to have the phones sync up using bluetooth
- Write code to send SMS messages

I'm wondering if there are any more options besides these, and if there's actually a best-practice for accomplishing this?

Ideally, I want the users to simply click a button in the app to make the sharing take place, so I don't want to go down the bluetooth route because that requires the user to do a bit of setup (or assumes they already have set things up in the form of bluetooth settings).

Since the data can be of variable length and potentially large, I believe that would rule out text messaging.

As far as the server route goes, from what I understand this seems to be an ok way of doing things, but my problem is that I have no experience with having users potentially sign in to a server and then uploading data. I don't know of the cost concerns (if any), or of potential security concerns (allowing just anyone to upload data, I'm not sure if I would have to take steps to ensure someone couldn't bypass the app and upload malicious data).

General :: App / Data Backup Options That Work Well With 4.3?

Oct 15, 2013

After upgrading to CM10.2 nightlies, I noticed that neither of my purchased back-up apps function as intended anymore.

ROM Toolbox Pro fails to backup phone data (such as SMS, accounts, dialer info... etc.), and Titanium Backup gives me an "insufficient free storage space" error any time I try to back up my apps. Now, I've already tried pretty much everything with Titanium Backup outside of installing SuperSU. I've changed the backup directory to every combination of emulated/legacy and sdcard0/legacy... etc. The only thing I can think of is that it doesn't play well with Koush's SuperUser app, but I don't want to bother removing it for SuperSU because it's integrated into the ROM nicely.

So is there any way to get Titanium Backup working properly with 4.3 ROMs? I'd like to use it ideally because the update.zip function really makes it the best backup option out there when it's working right.

Otherwise, are there any other backup apps that can backup apps/data/accounts/SMS with 4.3 ROMs without problems?

Android :: Phone Security Profiles

Nov 26, 2010

Hey guys, I previously posted this (i have now added something extra to this one) on another thread, it took me about 20 minutes to write, surpassing by far any the maximum time I ever spent on one single forum post in the past lmao.It was originally a response to someone who wanted to activate gps remotely if they lost their phone in order to use 'lookout' and then deactivate it afterwards to save battery. I though I'd make it its own thread since it took me ages to write, and it can effectively replace several features of the 'lookout' security app.

HTC Droid Eris :: Biometrics Security App For Phone?

Jan 22, 2010

There's apps to make our phone a short-range metal detector, a radio, a gaming platform, an e-reader. you can control your computer from it, find it when its been lost or stolen, do just about everything except babysit, taxes (not sure about this one, actually), and tapdance.

but is there a biometric security app? the unlock pattern can be determined from the trail your finger leaves on the screen, so id love if it would only unlock when my fingerprint is recognized. is there an app for THAT?

Motorola Droid :: Using Pattern Lock Or Other Security On Phone?

Dec 10, 2009

I'm seeing so many people complaining about the new lock screen that it seems that many Droid owners aren't using a pattern lock to secure their phone. This really surprises me, the phone contains access to all your email, contacts, calendar, and any other personal data you may have placed on it, and a large percentage of you aren't even using the basic security provided by the pattern lock? Or is it that many people don't know the pattern lock exists? I just can't imagine having a phone like this that isn't secured to whatever extent is available.

General :: Lg-P769 - Phone Auto Reboots And Comes Back With Security Error Screen

Apr 6, 2014

i tried to flash a rom without unlocking my bootloader. Well im running windows 8.1 and for some reason i couldnt get my computer to recognize the phone at all. After using 3 or 4 different guides i gave up for a few days so not to get too aggrivated. I mean its my own fault but my back up phone sucks lol. So i borrowed my wifes laptop running win 7. I Followed this guide androidforums.com/optimus-l9-all-things-root/807569-guide-security-error-fix.html. everything seemed to work got the s/w screen to appear in reverse and using the cmd prompt that says wiating for device then starting the .bat file from the download it says on the bat cmd prompt that everything worked. well at the bottom its says done then comes up with C:fast boot yours. i have been browsing Google but i haven't been able to find what i am supposed to do with the yours file. i tried putting a kdz file into the file location and running it from that but no luck. after a few min the phone auto reboots and comes back with the security error screen and not the backwards one.

Can anyone explain to me how the voice dialer chooses the possible phone numbers it displays as options? All of my contacts have at least two phone numbers (mobile and work), for some contacts the voice dialer only lists one number and for others, it will list all of them.I thought it might have something to do with the designated 'primary' number, but changing that has no effect. When I ask the app to call my wife, it only shows her mobile number even though there are two other numbers in her contact info.Even if I say to call her "at work" the work number won't show up, only the mobile number.

Samsung Captivate : Filesystem Access Options / Phone Connectivity

Aug 4, 2010

I'm a big fan of just having direct access to my devices (i.e., no sync, no "management" front end). So this isn't about local access from the device (using MyFiles or Astro), but from a PC in the same location (so not like 3G remote). So far I've explored these options: USB Connect phone, mount from notification menu, and there you go. Bluetooth Pair phone, use "send file" from PC BT app (running in system tray).

Files drop into a 'bluetooth' directory, ready to move/use. Android Web OS Very beta-esque right now, but runs as a service on the phone, then you can access the filesystem (and SMS, eventually other functions). You can copy up to the phone or download (basically via a simple web mechanism). Use across Another service on the phone, a basic FTP server accessible across WiFi.

Works pretty good so far, I created a 'network location' in Windows, then a shortcut on my desktop into my MP3 directory on /sd. So I just open that folder, copy over MP3s. Doesn't matter where the phone is currently sitting or connected. For the services type options, I'm going to check out something like Locale or Tasker, when I can trigger the service to fire up based on a rule (a specific WiFi network trigger would be outstanding).

Motorola Droid X :: Facebook Contacts Linked To Phone Contacts Missing Options

Jul 17, 2010

I got my DroidX on 7/15 and on 7/16 linked all my phone contacts who have facebook to a facebook contact via social networking. I kike how the phone sets the picture, I like that in the contact entry it shows me thier status on facebook. What I don't like is that when I open up a contac that is both a phone contact and a facebook contact and I tap the facebook icon on the contact screen I get 3 options (view profile, write on wall, and poke). If I open up a contact that is only facebook and tap that same Icon I get 4 options (view profile, message, write on wall, and poke). Is there some reason linking the facebook contact to a phone contact needs to remove that option? I'd like to be able to send a facebook message from the phone to any contact as easy as I can send a text message.

Android :: App Security

May 12, 2010

So I had a question about the security of apps on the market. I read the sticky about it which was very helpful but have a question about a particular app. In my hunt for a good alarm clock app I found "alarm clock plus" which I downloaded and think its a great app but I'm kind of worried about some of the permissions it uses.

They are:

Your Location, coarse (network based) location Network communication, full internet access Phone calls, read phone state and identity System tools, modify global system settings, prevent phone from sleeping

Is there anything here that seems sketchy? I thought it might need location for some sort of weather functionality, but it doesnt have anything like that. And I dont know why it would need full internet access either.

Maybe I am being to paranoid about the whole app security thing, what do you guys think?
