Android :: Creating Multiple Objects Of View Defined In Xml

Jun 9, 2010

I have to dynamically add a list of views (the views use RelativeLayout). Can I do this by specifying the view definition in xml and instantiate multiple objects off it? This gives the usual benefits of separating the view part from the code (for e.g., making it easy for the UI guys to alter things) or Is going the ArrayAdapter the suggested/only route?

Android :: Saving ArrayList Of User Defined Objects

Aug 10, 2010

I am working on an application where I am saving the state of an application in an ArrayList. Now, to save this state, I tried to use Serialization. But, somewhere in the user defined object, I am using Button, which is not letting me serialize the entire object. I wanted to know, is there any other way of saving this array list between onPause and onResume? I even tried onSaveInstanceState, but it doesn't have support for Array List.

Android :: How Are PNG Files Defined As Drawable Objects Resized Based On The Resolution

Oct 8, 2010

I have a PNG file that is 32x32 pixels. I use 8 of these as drawables in a row for my app. These drawables are not in the hdpi, mdpi, or ldpi folders. I've found that when starting any of the 3 standard size emulators, the screen view with all 8 drawables looks pretty much the same.

I note that the ldpi emulator I'm using (QVGA) has a resolution of 240x320. 8 x 32 = 256, so since I can see all my drawables (and space in-between) I'm betting something is changing their size.

I've read the Supporting Multiple Screens document at the Android developers page, but I still don't understand what is actually happening. Could you put your own words to explain what is happening to the size of my drawables and how the SDK knows to automatically modify them?

Android :: Download Multiple Objects From Same Server

May 5, 2010

How can I utilize Connection: Keep-Alive option, re-use connection and download multiple objects from the same server? HTTP connection consists of opening a socket, sending request and then readign response. For Keep-Alive option open the socket connection needs to be done only once. However I could not find in Android Java classes how this can be accomplished. URL.openConnection returns new instance of HttpURLConnection implementation for every request so HttpURLConnection cannot be cashed for reusing on multiple requests to the same server, URL object is also new for each request and also cannot be reused.

Android :: Use Spinner To Hide / Display View Objects?

Sep 26, 2010

For an Android application, I'm trying to use a Spinner which, when an option is selected, will hide/display relevant View objects. For my application, these objects are an EditText and an associated TextView label for the field. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the EditText to hide/display, and when I add it code to hide/display the TextView, I get a NullPointerException. I presume that since I am laying out the view objects in a RelativeLayout, by hiding one of the view objects, I am removing its relationship with other view objects, hence the NullPointer.

Can anyone figure out why this might be happening? Here's my code...

Android :: Creating An Object - Multiple Of Same Instance

Oct 19, 2010

I created an Matrix object (like the math Matrix, a 4x4 block of numbers for instance) and it works fine, can set row,col,variable just fine, but, I cant have more than one of the same object, I have it creating an ArrayList of a dozen Matrix objects, each with the three variables, but when I call changeVar(Matrix x,int variable) and refresh the printout of the matrix, it changes all of the numbers to what i changed the variable to. So it looks like its just creating the same instance over and over, and if you change one, it changes them all, am i missing anything obvious?

Android :: Pass Objects Around Activities Using A HashMap Of WeakReferences To Objects?

Oct 26, 2010

The FAQ mentions a method of passing objects around activities. (It is not clear to me): "A HashMap of WeakReferences to Objects. You can also use a HashMap of WeakReferences to Objects with Long keys. When an activity wants to pass an object to another activity, it simply puts the object in the map and sends the key (which is a unique Long based on a counter or time stamp) to the recipient activity via intent extras. The recipient activity retrieves the object using this key.".................

Android :: Best Practices For Creating Multiple App Versions From A Single Codebase?

May 4, 2010

Are there any viable approaches for creating multiple .APKs out of a single codebase? The apps may share the same code, but they could have different manifest files, different resources, or different external libraries (for example in an app with both free and paid versions, the free version could have a library for display ads). Ideally, this would be a single Eclipse project, with a way to specify which app to build/debug, and possibly a command line way to batch build everything.

I now want add a couple of command buttons at the end of the list (like BACK, HOME, , NEXT). When I add these extra views to the layout xml file then they get added along with every item in the list. I think there should be another layout defined for the buttons to be displayed separate from the list. Anyone has an idea on how to do this?

Android :: How To Filter Objects To Display Onscreen Objects On Map?

Jun 15, 2010

I have an application that have a Google map on Google Android 1.5 since we have been working on the application for a long time, we are not in stage of upgrading to the newest framework, so we are using 1.5. Now, I have map locations that are dynamically generated and drawn on the map at run-time to visualize some streams, Up to this point the application is working fine, Now my problem is that I am trying to filter the objects ( addresses) to visualize only the on-screen ones. I do NOT want to visualize the addresses that are off-screen. The way I am trying to do this is to check the screen-coordinates of each object (address) before visualizing it, then it the coordinates (x,y) more than (0,0) and less than (320, 460). I should visualize it. I am trying to use this approach, but it is not working for some reasons, I have tried many posts but could not understand why, there must be something missing somewhere that I am not aware of.

Android :: Extracting Activity Code And Creating Graph View Class

Mar 1, 2010

I had a bunch of code in an activity that displays a running graph of some external data. As the activity code was getting kind of cluttered, I decided to extract this code and create a GraphView class:

public class GraphView extends LinearLayout {
public GraphView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) {
super(context, attrs);
LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater)
context.getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
inflater.inflate(R.layout.graph_view, this, true);
}
public void start() {
// Perform initialization (bindings, timers, etc) here
}
public void stop() {
// Unbind, destroy timers, } }

Moving stuff into this new LinearLayout-derived class was simple. But there was some lifecycle management code associated with creating and destroying timers and event listeners used by this graph (I didn't want this thing polling in the background if the activity was paused, for example). Coming from a MS Windows background, I kind of expected to find overridable onCreate() and onDestroy() methods or something similar, but I haven't found anything of the sort in LinearLayout (or any of its inherited members). Having to leave all of this initialization code in the Activity, and then having to pass it into the view seemed like it defeated the original purpose of encapsulating all of this code into a reusable view. I ended up adding two additional public methods to my view: start() and stop(). I make these calls from the activity's onResume() and onPause() methods respectively. This seems to work, but it feels like I'm using duct tape here. Does anyone know how this is typically done?

Android :: Want Multiple Activities In A Single View

Nov 19, 2010

Were looking into Android for writing a tablet based system. Part of the design is for the system to be as modular as possible. One aspect of this is to display any "STATUS" activities in a side view on the screen. It looks like I can use PackageManager queryIntentActivities() to find the activities that show status information. But, can I display these in a single view all at the same time (via a linear layout)? The activities would be installed in separate apk's (features). Can this be accomplished using ActivityGroup? Is this even allowed in Android? Everything I've read implies that Activities take the whole screen or float on top. This implies only one activity can be active at a time where as the design I'm thinking of uses the activities more like widgets.
