The Build Target specifies which Android platform you'd like your application built against." However in my case The Build Target section of the open dialog does not contain any text field or select dropdown, so I am not able to specify anything.

Android :: Creating A Stub Of An Activity In Testing Project

Jul 22, 2010

I want to create a stub of one of my Activities, but I want to keep it in the test project so not to have it in the actual apk. I don't seem to be able to find a way to do it though. I get this:

java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to resolve activity for: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN flg=0x10000000 cmp=com.example.test.StubActivity }

I did find if I put it in the main project and put it in the manifest accordingly (IntentFilter:(Action:Main, Category:Default)) it will work, well it actually crashed, but I am not bothered by that. Something to fix later on.I did think about putting everything in the same main project and just have a test package, but that would then involve messing the manifest, I think. It seems better to keep them separate. It's just cleaner.

Android :: Creating A Service That Survives Application That Started It?

Nov 10, 2010

I'm developing an Android application that consists of:

a lightweight background service that logs events to a DB
a heavier GUI application that summarizes these events and displays graphs.

I'm having trouble creating the service part, though. The graphic application can use quite some RAM, and when it goes to the background, the OS closes it after some time of not being used.

The problem is, when the application gets shut down, so does the service. This is bad because this keeps me from recording further events. I don't care if the application gets terminated, but the service needs to keep on running.

I have tried numerous ways to keep the service alive, like having it use threads or a differently named process than the main app. Nothing has worked, and I have found no help on any of the android developer pages or forums.

If I didn't explicitly stop that service will it be loaded again and resumed when the device wakes up.

Android : Unable To Start Service Intent Error In Client-Server Project / Fix It?

Feb 12, 2009

I am getting the below error when ever i am trying to call the bind service. 02-12 20:17:25.486: WARN/ActivityManager(58): Unable to start service Intent { action=oem.android.proj2.IRemoteService }: not found

I have created the Client-Server application. At the Server site i have used the AIDL to impliment the interfaces in my Service class. At Client site i have exposed the AIDL interfaces and have one Activity that mainly do the IPC mechanism , i mean ServiceConnection, bindService and then call the Serivce of the Client site. But i am getting the error i mentioned during the bindService call.

Could you please let me know the steps mainly i have to follow to run the Client -Server Application. For time being i am running the Client .apk first and then the Server .apk, but the server one giving me error.

It would be great if you could let me know what all permission short of thing to take care, as my Client and Server code are placed at different APks, so do i need to import the Client project in my Server Project, if yes then how to impliment that.

Android :: Creating An Android Service That Cannot Be Killed

Sep 10, 2010

I am trying to write an app that cannot be killed by a user or another application. I understand this goes against what Android has designed for its platform, this is more of a proof of concept. The plan is two have two apps, app1 and app2. When app1 starts it will start app2 and then bind onto app2, when app2 starts it will make sure app1 is started if not, then start it and bind onto app1. The point of app1 binding on app2 and app2 binding on app1 is so when one of them gets killed a method will be called that the binding has been disconnected and the app can then be restarted. I currently have the apps starting each other when they start up but I cannot seem to get them to restart when I force close one of them.

For App1 service I have and app2 very similar:

CODE:..............

And for my class that implements ServiceConnection I have:

CODE:............

I think the issue I am having is that onServiceDisconnected never gets called when app1 or app2 is killed. I think this may be because I am not correctly binding to a service.

W/JavaBinder( 884): ibinderForJavaObject: 0x436274a0 is not a Binder object
W/JavaBinder( 891): ibinderForJavaObject: 0x43621d30 is not a Binder object

How can I bind services together so when one gets force closed that I will get a notice on the other?

Android :: Reference Project Library From Another Project

Jun 6, 2010

I have 2 android projects out of which I modified one to work as a library. I want the main project to refer to this library to perform few functions. While this scenario works just as expected, I want to introduce one more functionality. I want to link this library project with another just a java project which has code common to both Android and Blackberry applications. This second part however doesn't seem to work and throws "The application <appname> (<package name>) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" with a ForceClose button. I would greatly appreciate if someone can give a brief information on how to make this work.

Android :: R.java File From Android Library Project Not Importing Into Application Project

Aug 8, 2010

I followed the instructions here on how to create an Android library project, and use it in an Android application:

http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/eclipse-adt.html

But it is not working. I can see the library project is added to my application but I cannot reference anything in it because it won't build. The R.java file from the lib is NOT being added to my application project, so the lib project contains tons of errors, everywhere it tries to reference it's own R.java file.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but in the console there are messages stating that the there is "No resource identifier found for attribute 'X' in package 'Lib Package'. My library package has a a few styleable attributes defined for a custom view I made, all of which are being complained about in this console message. The library builds just fine, and I don't get those messages in the console until I hook the library to my application, so I don't know what's up with this.

Android :: Service Auto Restarts On Breakpoint When Debugging A Service

I am trying to run the sample soft keyboard included in the SDK. I am using the debugger, and the literature says that to use a breakpoint while debugging a SERVICE, I need to include:

android.os.Debug.waitForDebugger();

So here is the portion of the code I modified:

CODE:...........

I have put a couple of breakpoints, at the statements indicated by the comments.

This is what happens: the debugger first stops at the breakpoint1, for a few seconds. But then the service restarts. For the life of me I can't figure out what makes the service to restart.

Android :: How To Get Interface On Service Without Destroying Service At Unbind?

Mar 1, 2009

My service works exactly the way i want as long as i use start and stop and communicate using intents. However my activity needs to change the state of my service as well as retrieving state information. So i thought it would be nice to broadcast some kind of state_changed event from my service and use a binder interface to pull information from the service or change the services state based on user input. This works fine too. The only problem is that my service gets killed when i unbind it just as the documentation says.Is there any way to keep the service alive but still get an interface to control it directly. My activity offers the user a way to stop the service and the service kills itself anyway after it's work is done but i don't want the service to stop every time the activity is destroyed.

what I'm trying to do here is implement something like a peer-to-peer client. Being that, it will start a client thread and a server thread.I know Services themselves run in the main GUI thread, so I'll have to start a couple of independent threads (or Asynctasks?) for each server and client. The only thing I'm not so sure about is if I'll better have 1 Service starting 2 threads, or maybe 2 services, each one of them starting their own thread.
