Android :: Contact Custom Fields
Jun 9, 2010
Alright, I'm a little new to the Android SDK, so forgive me if my question doesn't make sense or is very trivial. I'd like to add a custom field for contacts, that contains the contacts username on a website I'm doing this app for. And, with this custom field, I'd like to have the ability to click it (like "Send message" or "Call mobile") so that I can go to a specif Activity in my application, with a TextView set with the username that I just clicked on.Sorry if that is a bit confusing, if you need anything else let me know!

I noticed that currently GMail contacts does not have all the fields like birthday, anniversary, etc. like Outlook and my Palm Treo 755p. Does anyone know if this will be addressed? I hate the idea of "upgrading" my phone and losing functionality.

I have a ListView that displays a set of notes, each with varying ammounts of data (i.e. some have a due date, others don't).Currently, each view in the list is a RelativeLayout containing a TextView for each field, plus two Button and a CheckBox. I then simply hide the unused fields by setting visible false on each one. This has worked well, but I'm about to add a lot more data fields to the notes and inflating that many unneeded views for each row will surely kill my app. I need a more dynamic solution.I've decided the best way to go is to create a custom view. How can I implement/design my view so that it can display a variable number of text fields without creating/ destroying textviews each time (which would be quite expensive and worse than my current situation), or maintaining a large pool of hidden textviews?

I'm trying to add a custom data field and MIME type to the Contacts screen. Is there a way to do this such that when a user views a contact with my data saved on it, my field appears there? This is something I've seen other apps do--how do the Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm, etc. apps add their status information to contacts, for example? I can't seem to figure it out from the Contacts API documentation.

Whew... I just rooted and installed the "Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM" from AdamG.
It seems to look and feel exactly like 2.1, which wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting the lockscreen to be different (the horizontal one). Is that a feature of Sense? Do I HAVE to get rid of Sense to install that?
Also: Now I am unable to add custom fields to even my Google contacts (earlier I couldn't do it for phone contacts, but it was possible for Google contacts). Is that a problem with this ROM? What ROM should I install to have this feature?

Looking for an app where i can create information on people i play against at poker. I want to be able to profile each player and have custom fields to which i can make a custom dropdown or have a text box. For example, want different fields for name, loose/tight, preflop, notes, etc etc. The only poker tracking app I ser that is close is poker agent, and in that most of the profile fields are for physical features. I cannot find a contact app that allows for custom named fields.

Is it possible to add custom menu items in the native Contact list ?
I mean when the user selects a user from his contact list, is it possible to add a custom action there ? ( for those who are familiar with Blackberry development, something similar to the MenuItem class )

So on my Galaxy s4 I know how to set up a custom sms/mms tone for individual contacts. HOWEVER they are always the same tones listed. When I create or download any notification sound it won't show up on the list when I try to make it a custom but it will show for my default list. Apparently I did it somehow because one of my notification tones I created appeared on the list but that's it. How to add to that list?

I have been looking to try to choose one of my ringtones for notification confirmations as well as received calls. All that I have found are the OS ringtones for those 2 operations. (ringtone: DROID)
I have found how to choose from my custom ringtones only for individual contact. how I can get my ringtones to be seen or where to place them so that the Droid sees them?

I have my default ring tone set. I then went under contacts and set certain ring tones for my wife, family etc... I had my wife call me and it rings with the default ring tone. I have tried everything and nothing seems to change. Anyone that calls that I have a preset ring tone for, it just uses the default for the phone.

Got the new Galaxy (specifically the vibrant) and I love it. One thing I can't figure out though. How do you set a custom (mp3) ringtone to a specific contact? I've done a good bit of searching on this and it seems to work as long as the contact is stored on the phone however the option is NOT there when it's a contact sync'd from Google.

I've seen a few posts about this but nothing to say definitively (thank god for spell check!) if it's possible or not. On my HTC Legend (HTC Sense with Android 2.1) if you go to add and folder from a homescreen you have a choice of All people, Facebook Phonebook, Phones, Starred (Favorites). Is it possible to create another folder that will hold members of a contact group that I have created? I can create a new empty folder but don't know how to put contacts into this instead of other home screen icons (this would do if I can't use contact groups).

I switched to a Droid X from a BlackBerry. On the BlackBerry, not only could you set phone and SMS custom alerts and ringtones (in addition to custom ring profiles for certain contacts), you could also set email alerts.
So for example, if my husband emailed me, it would ring a custom alert for his email, not just for an email to that particular account. That meant I didn't need to look at my phone every time got an email to see who it was from. (I have a web-based business and I get literally hundreds of emails every day.)
On the BlackBerry, not only were there custom inboxes for each email account, there was a "universal" inbox. There doesn't seem to be a function exactly like that for the Android (I tried adding my Gmail accounts to the one there, but it keeps defaulting me back to each Gmail box).
Is there an app for this?
I have Ringo Pro for my custom sms and call alerts, but an email alert would be a lifesaver. There are a lot of BB converts to Android (and I'm sure more to come) who would gladly pay for an app to handle this. So far, it's the only thing I can see where the Droid X doesn't beat the BB.

I am new to writing Android Applications, and I need to be able to implement the following functionality. When a user clicks a specific button, I want a customized "prompt" box to appear, containing several fields (a textfield, a password field, and a checkbox field). I would also be nice if I could add an image inside this box. How would I go about implementing this sort of functionality?

I would like to use EditTextPreference to show 2 input fields instead of 1. For instance, a username and password field should be shown. I don't want to use a dialog for each one. How can this be done? In the WiFi settings there is one that does this, when you want connect to a protected network, a dialog shows to set a password for the credential storage with 2 fields.

I'm working on a Java Android game. Games here generally need to use memory pools to avoid garbage collection.Making use of subclasses is a pain when using memory pools as you need to e.g. say how many Roamer and Chaser objects you want upfront and not just how many Enemy objects you might need.I would then have an update function that checked the "type" variable and updated accordingly. This is obviously a more C-like approach. It feels hacky though because e.g. a roamer enemy will have a "target" variable it never uses. I'm unlikely to have more than a 100 enemies in memory at a time though so it really isn't a big deal memory wise. I just want some compromise between nice code and speed.Does anyone have any comments on how best to structure this? Is merging classes like this going too far? Is this ever a good idea? Should I just use a regular class tree?

I know rule #1 of optimization is: don't do it! But I figured this was an easy question, and if I start using the faster method now I can save a lot of cpu time when I'm finished. Now, the answer to my question may be "there's no difference" and that's fine with me. I just want to know.
