Android :: Changing Colors.XML File At Runtime

Sep 9, 2010

I have an application where I would like the users to be able to change the theme. Currently my layout have elements like this: <LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="@color/background_transparency"> what I would like to do is to change to a new colors.xml that has a different value for "@color/background_transparency" if the user selects one of the themes available. Alternatively to be able to change the value of "@color/background_transparency" in code.Is this possible? Or am I doing this the wrong way.

Android :: Changing 9 Patch Background On List Item In Runtime Doesn't Always Redraw

Jun 1, 2009

I have a ListView containing a few different type of items, all having their own background image and font color. In my first implementation I implemented each type of item as its own layout with the background image etc defined in XML (and implemented Adapter.getView() so that it only reuses convertView if it's of the correct type). This works fine but the performance is not that great while scrolling since I'm inflating quite a few Views due to convertView mismatches, so instead I tried using the same layout for all items (to benefit fully from convertView reuse) and changing the background image and font size in runtime. I even keep the three background Drawables I need as members to save time decoding them from a resource for each item, and call View.setBackgroundDrawable() from Adapter.getView(). The problem is, sometimes the 9-patch is not correctly wrapped around the content of the list item when using this approach. While scrolling it usually looks correct but when the scrolling stops, or sometimes when I just tap anywhere on the list, the background 9-patch of some large items starts flickering and is either cropped or resized to its original PNG size rather than stretched to wrap the content.

First of all, I suspect this is a bug? Any ideas why this happens? Could it be that the View is not always measured to reflect the changed content when the 9-patch is applied? I have tried adding an extra call to View.invalidate() but it doesn't solve the problem. Second, does this approach sound reasonable at all, or how should I go about to optimize this scenario?

Android :: Specifying SeekBar Colors In Layout File

Seems to me that I should be able to set the colors of the SeekBar thumb, slider, and progress bar in my layout xml file. However, I don't see relevant attributes for these SeekBar components. I only want to change the colors, not replace any images being used for the thumb, etc. What am I missing?

Android :: Android Changing Colors With Themes

Jun 10, 2010

I am trying to provide user settable colors in my app. White text on black background and black text on white background. I have multiple layouts with many listviews, both standard and custom adapters. People have suggested using Themes, but I have had no luck changing the text colors across all layouts. Can anyone show me an actual Theme layout that can accomplish this? I can easily change the background colors using myscreen. setBackGroundColor(xx), but when I try to change the text with a theme, it also changes spinner text as well.

Android :: Any Set Style Method At Runtime In Layout File?

Feb 1, 2009

I created my style in styles.xml, lets say MyStyle. I can use it in any layout file by style="@style/MyStyle". Also my generated R class have R.style.MyStyle, my question is if I can use it at runtime to "setStyle" - unfortunately View doesn't have such a method. If not what is R.style.MyStyle used for? (I already know that custom themes IDs are also in R.style and can be used to setTheme, but MyStyle is not a theme).

Android :: Runtime Error Using Exported - Signed Apk But No Runtime Error Using Eclipse IDE

Mar 2, 2009

1) I am developing my app in Eclipse 3.4.1 with Android (ver 1.1_r1) plugin. My app compiles and executes without errors when using the Eclipse IDE.

However, when I export my app (unsigned) using Eclipse (via {select project} >right-click>Android tools>export unsigned application package), sign it, and try to run it on the Emulator, it throws a runtime error when I try to update my sqlite database, at which time the specific error created is: SQLite error#14, unable to open database. It is able to read from the database without problems. (I have also verified that the database is: open, is not readonly, is not locked by another thread, is not in the middle of a transaction.)

I have limited experience, but this seems more like a "system" problem given that the app works OK in Eclipse IDE but then fails as an exported/signed apk. Some googling of SQLite resources revealed a similar error on a non-Android platform which was fixed by: "Set your permissions correctly on /var/tmp, or whatever directory you are using to hold temporary files".

Does Android have temporary files, and if so how does it handle permissions on temporary files? Is there a way to check or set these permissions to see if this fixes my problem here?

2) Not sure if it is related, but after I have run the exported/signed app which causes the runtime error, if I reboot the Emulator, and try to run the program using the Eclipse IDE , the program fails with the same exact error. PLUS I also noticed the following error message while the program is installing/running: 03-01 22:22:29.282: ERROR/PackageManager(53): Package com.northwestradiology has mismatched uid: 0 on disk, 10019 in settings; read messages:

I can restore the Eclipse version of my program to be able to execute without runtime errors by utilizing the -wipe-data option for the emulator. But note that if I run my signed APK using an emulator created with the -wipe-data option, it still throws the runtime error listed above...

Android :: Possible Using Xml File Without Changing Sizes Manually?

The design is like a row that have two cells. I want one of them to be autosize and fill the row and one of them to have fixez size. I want that the second linearlayout to wrapp its content and the first one to fill the rest of the space.
Something like in css having two divs floating left and one having fixed size and one filling the rest of the row.

Is something like that possible using the xml file without changing the sizes manually?

General :: Changing File Associations

Oct 11, 2012

I have a couple of FLV format movies on my phone that play fine with the MX Player video app. The problem is, they are not associated with the player. For some reason, they were auto associated with ZA Archiver (winzip type app), so clicking on the vids in my file explorer triggers that app instead. Plus it opens to ZA's browser, meaning I'd have to browse to the vids again to try and open. At that point, ZA then asks what program I want to open them with. Clearing data on ZA didnt' work (How I thought you could remove file type associations), and uninstalling it removed all associations with the movies. It then just gives me an error that the files cannot be opened.

Is there any way I can force FLV's to always open in MX Player? I know I could use MX's built in browser to get to them as well, but just a personal preference thing that I want to use the stock file explorer.

HTC Eris :: Changing Boot Animation - Zip File And ADB Shell

May 3, 2010

I have the VanillaDroid ROM installed on 2.1 v2. My phone is rooted. But I don't like the boot animation that came with the ROM, so I decided to change it. In every tutorial I've seen, people mention a "bootanimation.zip". However, I can't find it anywhere on the phone. But I did find the "bootscreen" folder in "/system/media/" with the bootup animations in it. I assumed that if I swap out the animations for the new ones, it would work (reasonable enough right?). Not really. Apparently, I deleted everything in the bootscreen folder, but when I try copying stuff into it from the memory card, it can't find any directory on the memory card through the "adb shell" stuff.

I know the folder with the bootscreen animations and stuff exists on the memory card, but apparently the shell commands say it doesn't exist. So now my phone boots up with no animation or sound. Its nice to have a quiet boot, and it does seem to start up a little faster, but I want a boot screen again. I know if I reflashed the ROM, it would come back (or at least should). But I don't want to have to reset and redownload all my apps and stuff, especially since I have just got everything the way I want. Is there anyway to get the bootup animations back without reflashing? And if I would reflash, since its the same ROM, would I need to do a factory reset?

Android :: How To Get System Colors

Nov 16, 2010

I've seen references on how to SET system colours, but I need to find out how you GET them - how do you find out what they are? On the Samsung Galaxy S for example, the tab views, ListView highlights when you select an item, and the Summary text line on the preference screen are all blue.There are many apps which immitate this style and I want to do the same. Obviously I cannot just hard code and set the colour to Blue, as other handsets use different colors.The question is, is there a way to programmatically find out what colour the Preference Screen Summary Line, Tabs, or ListView selections are, so that you can then set that against a TextView elsewhere in your app?How do I get the android system colours?

Android :: Extracting Colors From Themes?

Apr 26, 2010

I want to use colors from a Theme to apply it to HTML my app is rendering. I am wondering if I can do that? I am looking to use colors like they are specified in themes.xml: <itemname = " color Fore ground">@android:color/bright_foreground_dark
name =" colorBack ground " >@android:color/background_dark

@android: color/primary_text_dark
I get this as a result: I/System.out( 1578): tv.string=null I/System.out( 1578): tv.coerced=#ffffffff I/System.out( 1578): colorResourceId=-1 I/System.out( 1578): tv.string=res/color/primary_text_light.xml I/System.out( 1578): tv.coerced=res /color/primary_text_light.xml I/System.out( 1578): colorResourceId=-16777216 The results are different. The first one actually gives me the color "#fffffff" which would work for me, the second one only gives me an xml. Do I need to jump through a few more hoops here to resolve the actual color? Does my original intention work at all? Maybe it won't work, because colors could be arbitrary drawables? I didn't find any relevant documentation, but if you know any, just point me there please. Btw. I also tried obtainStyledAttributes(), but this had basically the same issues. ou received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. Android :: How To Change Colors Of A Drawable?

Aug 21, 2009

I'm working on an android application, and I have a drawable that I'm loading up from a source image.On this image, I'd like to convert all of the white pixels to a different color, say blue, and then cache the resultant Drawable object so I can use it later.So for example say I have a 20x20 PNG file that has a white circle in the middle, and that everything outside the circle is transparent.What's the best way to turn that white circle blue and cache the results? Does the answer change if I want to use that source image to create several new Drawables (say blue, red, green, orange, etc)?I'm guessing that I'll want to use a ColorMatrix in some way, but I'm not sure how.

My approach is basically the one from the example at the bottom this page: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/color-list-resource.html.But if I try it with android:textColor as described in the above link it works fine. So it has to be the background issue. I don't want to create a 9patch-png if it's not necessary (basically i just need a "clickable" rectangle so i use a button with a colored background)
