Android : Changing Text Value Of A Textview Dynamically

Nov 9, 2010

I have a textview in my XML layout file, but when I try to change its text value with code pragmatically (dynamically, depending on which button the user clicks) then the text of the textview doesn't change.

This is the code that I tried:

TextView userText = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.User);

userText.setText(bundle.getString("user"));

In debug mode, I can see that usertext has the changed text, but the change doesn't appear on my mobile window... I don't know why.

EDIT: SOLVED! it was a problem with my relative layout, text is out of the window!

Android : Alert Dialog With Dynamically Changing Text On Every Request

Jun 5, 2009

I want to show an AlertDialog with one option that might change on every request. So for example at one time I want to show the option "add to contacts" while another time it should be "remove from contacts".

My code does work on the first time, however Android seems to cache the AlertDialog so that onCreateDialog is not executed next time. Therefore the option doesn't change anymore. Can I prevent this caching, or is there just another way of changing the option?

I am working with SDK 1.5 but using 1.1. Code...

Android :: Changing Application's Icon While Its Running

Jul 9, 2010

Is there a way to change an application's icon without upgrading it? The idea is that there are two icons in the drawable folder, both with different names. At some point during the applications runtime, the icon will switch to a different one to alert the user that something occurred. I have looked into doing a widget, but that isn't exactly what I want, since I don't want to send a push notification.

Android :: Dynamically Changing Views

I'm trying to learn how to build apps for Android. The first simple app, which will become a component of a bigger app I hope to build, is to have a button on the screen where, when tapped, it adds something new to the view. For instance: Imagine a layout that only has a button:

[Create!]

When that button is pressed, the view gets a new row added to it:

[Create!]

Android :: Changing Position And Margin Of Button Dynamically

Sep 24, 2010

I would like to change margin of my buttons in application. Suppose I have 5 buttons like this in a linear layout, one below d other. When I focus on a button, its width should increase (which I know how to handle) and at the same time, width should increase linearly towards both left and right. i.e. If the current width of the button is 250 with x co-ordinate as 50 (that means button's left is 50 and button's right is 300), when I focus on the button I should get x co-ordinate as 75 (left = 25 and right = 325). How to change the margin/x co-ordinate of the button?

Android :: Is There An App For Changing Max Icon Number?

Mar 11, 2010

I liked how on my LG Dare that I could drag icons onto the home screen and place them how I want (not locked to a grid). Not only could I arrange them however I wanted, I could also place as many as I could fit (almost). Is there a widget or app that allows me to place a "box" on the home screen to toss apps into. Right now I've found 'More Icons widget" but that only allows me to place 4 icons into the spot of 1, which makes them very tiny and arranges them in a square. Anything else out there?

Android :: Changing A Widget's Icon From OnUpdate

Dec 29, 2009

I have a widget that is meant to change its icon every time it receives the Update broadcast. However, the widget never manages to display its icon properly, displaying the text "Problem loading widget". The Logcat message is: WARN/AppWidgetHostView(612): updateAppWidget couldn't find any view, using error view
WARN/ App Widget HostView(612) : android.widget.RemoteViews$ActionException: can't find view: 0x7f060003 The code for my onUpdate is: public class ImageWidgetProvider extends AppWidgetProvider{private static final String TAG = "Steve"; public static final int[] IMAGES = { R.drawable.ic_launcher_alarmclock,/*and many more*/}; @Override public void onUpdate(Context context, AppWidgetManager appWidgetManager, int[] appWidgetIds){for (int appWidgetId : appWidgetIds) {Log.d(TAG, "onUpdate:"); int imageNum = (new java.util.Random().nextInt(IMAGES.length)); Log.d(TAG, Integer.toString (IMAGES[imageNum])); RemoteViews remoteView = new RemoteViews(context.getPackageName(), R.layout.widget); emoteView.setImageViewResource (R.id.image_in_widget, IMAGES[ imageNum]);Now when I hover the mouse over "R.id.image_in_widget" it brings up that its value is equal to 0x7f060003 - the view that it can't find according to Logcat. Using the second Log statement, I verified that IMAGES[imageNum] does indeed refer to a random image from the IMAGES array. (In case it matters, it comes out as a decimal value rather than a hexadecimal one.) Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Edit: Here is the layout file for the widget, where the image_in_widget ImageView is declared.

Android :: Changing Battery Icon Position

I want to take my activity the entire screen of the device and I could do that by making appropriate changes in the android manifest file (Theme. NoTitleBar .Fullscreen). But, now I just want battery status icon on my screen alongwith other components of my activity. Is that possible?if yes, then how? I tried to use battery manager but, it does not expose such interfaces. I guess its mainly useful for checking and using battery life status and firing intents appropriately. Android :: Displaying XML-based Layout / Adding Text Dynamically

Sep 12, 2009

I have a LinearLayout defined in XML that I want to use repeatedly to display elements of a list. The XML-layout looks like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="@drawable/background"
android:paddingBottom="5px">

<TextView
android:id="@+id/destination"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="22dp"
android:text="@string/test_destination"
android:paddingLeft="5px"/>

<TextView
android:id="@+id/date"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="15dp"
android:text="@string/test_date"
android:paddingLeft="5px"/>

<TableLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="@+id/info"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:paddingLeft="5px"
android:paddingTop="10px" >

I gather information about certain events from a webpage, and then I want to display all events in a list using the above layout for each event. My current approach is to have a LinearLayout as parent and then adding each event as a row.

Problem number one is to add the layout to each event (the number of events is varying). I.e., I want to dynamically inflate this layout for each event. I also don't want the text to be hard coded into the layout (as above) but added at runtime. I don't know how to do this. I have tried something like the following without any success.

LinearLayout eventView = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.layout.event);
parentView.addView(eventView);

Problem number two is then to add these layouts to the parent view group and display it on the screen. When I try to do this using parent.addView(child), the program crashes at runtime and I can't figure out why.

It's kind of hard to describe the specific problem, since I'm new to GUI-programming on Android and I'm sort of programming by trial and error right now. Anyway, if you are able to help me with some of the problems it would be greatly appreciated. Linus

EDIT:
The problem now is adding text dynamically to the TextViews. I try this:

TextView dest = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.destination);dest.setText("myText");

only to discover that dest is null. Any ideas why and how to fix this?

EDIT 2:
I have narrowed the problem even more, but I really don't understand its nature. This is the trouble-method: Code...
it somehow works (even though the events are displayed in reverse order). Anyone knows what's going on here?

Android :: Dynamically Change Text Color Of A TextView Inside A ListView

Nov 18, 2010

I'm trying to create a game lobby for a project, and I'd like the game's status text to be a different color: red for an "[IN PROGRESS]" game and green for a game that's "[Waiting for x players]". The ListView will be populated with data, and each ListView item will have a game ID and then immediately to the right of that the game's status.

Right now I'm essentially using the Hello ListView code to create my ListView.

(In constructor)

CODE:...........

Then, I have a refresh button that obtains data from our database. It will get two Strings, one for the ID of the game, and the other for the status of the game. If the game status is 0, then it's still waiting for players. If the game status is 1, then the game has started. So, I create a gameItem to add to the gameList:

CODE:.............

This is where I'm stuck. I don't really understand how I can alter the specific TextView when I create the gameItem or when I add that to the gameList. There isn't a way I can see of accessing the TextView's properties. I see how the text of the view is set (through the mapping of the strings to "line1" and "line2", but I don't know how to change any of the properties.
