Android :: Dynamically Setting Links To Text In Strings.xml?

Feb 11, 2010

I'm trying to make an app with localisation built in, but I want a way that I can create a web link within the text, the URL being defined elsewhere (for ease of maintenance).

So, I have my links in res/values/strings.xml code...
But this didn't work either.

So, I'd like to know if there's a way of dynamically adding multiple URLs to different sections of the same text which will link to web content?

Android :: Strings Generated By Substring Not Treated As Hard Coded Strings

Nov 21, 2010

Dear all, I'm making a simple file decoder for Android 2.2 that needs to find the filename of the encoded file from a header. This filename should then be used as the filename for the decoded file (as you would expect).The filename is identified by the substring name=, so the actual name starts 5 places after that. The line is read by a BufferedReader and temporarily stored in currLine.For some reason I can't understand nor find on the web, Strings do not always seem to be Strings.Gives no output file, nor an IO exception. The string is parsed properly though: from the System.out debugging lines.

Aug 19, 2010

I've got a map of about 500 entries. Strings are all very short (less than 5 chars).Its read-only data I want to read once at app-startup. What's the best way to store this so that loading this data is fast?I've tried storing the data in a CSV in res/raw but this takes about 700ms to parse on my N1, so I'm hoping there's a faster way.

Android :: Setting Attributes Of An EditText Added Dynamically In Phone

Nov 17, 2010

I am developping an android app which downloads an xml and displays a layout with a number of edittexts, checkboxes, spinners, etc. added dynamically like this:

LinearLayout ll = new LinearLayout(this);
EditText nameField = new EditText(this);
ll.addView(nameField);
ScrollView sv = new ScrollView(this);
sv.addView(ll);
setContentView(sv);

I'm having trouble with setting some properties to an EditText added this way. For examle android:maxLength attribute can easily be set in an xml layout but I found no method to do the same in the java code. How can I do it when hawing to add dynamically?

I recently switched from a Treo to the Moment. Generally quite pleased, but the Moxier email client doesn't seem to be displaying html links at all.

Exchange mail on the Treo still shows links, so unlike some of the other posts, the problem is not with the corporate exchange server stripping out html.

Is there a setting in Moxier to enable links within email messages?

Android : Changing Text Value Of A Textview Dynamically

Nov 9, 2010

I have a textview in my XML layout file, but when I try to change its text value with code pragmatically (dynamically, depending on which button the user clicks) then the text of the textview doesn't change.

This is the code that I tried:

TextView userText = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.User);

userText.setText(bundle.getString("user"));

In debug mode, I can see that usertext has the changed text, but the change doesn't appear on my mobile window... I don't know why.

EDIT: SOLVED! it was a problem with my relative layout, text is out of the window!

Android :: Can One Combine Android Resource Strings Into New Strings?

Aug 31, 2010

by which the resource "bar" becomes an alias for the resource named "foo".What I would for my app is a possibility to combine an existing resource prefix with different suffixes,where the resource "bar" would yield the string "foobar". Its clear that '+' doesn't work here but is there some other option to achieve such a string concatenation, so that one could define a bunch of string resources that have a common prefix?I realize of course that I could do such resource string concatenation at runtime but defining them statically in the resources would seem so much more elegant and simpler.

Android :: Displaying XML-based Layout / Adding Text Dynamically

Sep 12, 2009

I have a LinearLayout defined in XML that I want to use repeatedly to display elements of a list. The XML-layout looks like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="@drawable/background"
android:paddingBottom="5px">

<TextView
android:id="@+id/destination"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="22dp"
android:text="@string/test_destination"
android:paddingLeft="5px"/>

<TextView
android:id="@+id/date"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="15dp"
android:text="@string/test_date"
android:paddingLeft="5px"/>

<TableLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="@+id/info"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:paddingLeft="5px"
android:paddingTop="10px" >

I gather information about certain events from a webpage, and then I want to display all events in a list using the above layout for each event. My current approach is to have a LinearLayout as parent and then adding each event as a row.

Problem number one is to add the layout to each event (the number of events is varying). I.e., I want to dynamically inflate this layout for each event. I also don't want the text to be hard coded into the layout (as above) but added at runtime. I don't know how to do this. I have tried something like the following without any success.

LinearLayout eventView = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.layout.event);
parentView.addView(eventView);

Problem number two is then to add these layouts to the parent view group and display it on the screen. When I try to do this using parent.addView(child), the program crashes at runtime and I can't figure out why.

It's kind of hard to describe the specific problem, since I'm new to GUI-programming on Android and I'm sort of programming by trial and error right now. Anyway, if you are able to help me with some of the problems it would be greatly appreciated. Linus

EDIT:
The problem now is adding text dynamically to the TextViews. I try this:

TextView dest = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.destination);dest.setText("myText");

only to discover that dest is null. Any ideas why and how to fix this?

EDIT 2:
I have narrowed the problem even more, but I really don't understand its nature. This is the trouble-method: Code...
it somehow works (even though the events are displayed in reverse order). Anyone knows what's going on here?

Android : Alert Dialog With Dynamically Changing Text On Every Request

I want to show an AlertDialog with one option that might change on every request. So for example at one time I want to show the option "add to contacts" while another time it should be "remove from contacts".

My code does work on the first time, however Android seems to cache the AlertDialog so that onCreateDialog is not executed next time. Therefore the option doesn't change anymore. Can I prevent this caching, or is there just another way of changing the option?

I am working with SDK 1.5 but using 1.1. Code...

Android :: Dynamically Change Text Color Of A TextView Inside A ListView

Nov 18, 2010

I'm trying to create a game lobby for a project, and I'd like the game's status text to be a different color: red for an "[IN PROGRESS]" game and green for a game that's "[Waiting for x players]". The ListView will be populated with data, and each ListView item will have a game ID and then immediately to the right of that the game's status.

Right now I'm essentially using the Hello ListView code to create my ListView.

(In constructor)

CODE:...........

Then, I have a refresh button that obtains data from our database. It will get two Strings, one for the ID of the game, and the other for the status of the game. If the game status is 0, then it's still waiting for players. If the game status is 1, then the game has started. So, I create a gameItem to add to the gameList:

CODE:.............

This is where I'm stuck. I don't really understand how I can alter the specific TextView when I create the gameItem or when I add that to the gameList. There isn't a way I can see of accessing the TextView's properties. I see how the text of the view is set (through the mapping of the strings to "line1" and "line2", but I don't know how to change any of the properties.

Android :: Setting Acquired Location To Text View - How To Maintain?

May 8, 2010

I have built an app for the Motorola Droid which should automatically update a server with the phone's location. After the user performs a particular task on the main activity screen, an alarm is set to update the user's location periodically, using a service. The alarm is explicitly stopped when the user completes another task. Thing is, I have set up a location manager within the main activity's onCreate() method which is supposed to place the first acquired lat/long into two textview fields. Even though the manifest is set up for acquiring coarse and fine coords and I'm using requestLocationUpdates (String provider, long minTime, float minDistance, LocationListener listener), with minTime and minDistance set to zero, I'm not seeing the coords coming up on the screen.

With that, I'm not recording any locations on the server. When I seed the textviews with sample coords, they are being recorded fine on the server. I am not at a computer that can run the IDE, so don't currently have the code, but am desperate for some help on this. One other thing is that the main activity screen calls a photography app before the user manually clicks "send data". I'm suspicious that I may need to override the main activity's onResume() method to do this location acquisition.

Android :: After Changing A Preference - A Setting - Text Showing Settings Doesn't Update

Apr 13, 2010

I will try to explain a simple app scenario: My app goes right to a 'main view'. In this main view I have inserted a 'TextView' which displays current settings created by way of the PreferenceManager. For simplicities sake, let's say I have a checkbox in my settings. When I first start my app - the TextView on my main view shows my checkbox setting correctly (true). Now I go to the settings menu, it pops-up, and then I change it to false. I go back to the main view and...no change. It still say's true even after I changed it to false. If I end the app and then re-start it - all is well and it shows my change.

Apparently the main view just stays in the background while I'm changing settings? How can I redraw or update the main view after I change settings?
